David Jaffe Accidentally Leaks Details About New Game

I love David Jaffe, I wish more people within the industry were as open and public as himself. He really gives you an incite on how hard making good games are yet he gives his fans the time of day which can't be said for many people in the industry.

I'm surprised that there is still speculation about whether or not this is Twisted Metal. The game was announced, at least on some level, in Twisted Metal: Head On - Extra Twisted Edition. So this is the next TM unless they decided to can it and start something new.

Lets say he is making a vehicle combat game. What would you guys rather want? The gun centered on the car, and in order to shoot you must aim with the car. Or a aim-able gun with the right stick, separate from steering?
I would use both...

One weapon that shots in the direction the vehicle is headed and one weapon which can be aimed separate from steering.

What else would you have, some douchebag who spent four years in school learning how to make people like him?

FUCK

THAT

It's actually quite possible to "be yourself" while being aware of those around you.

You're on NeoGAF and never played Twisted Metal I or II? How old are you? :lol
20. Never owned a PS1 myself -- only used my brother's and friends. Missed out on a lot of good games as a kid :(

Nope. But from all ive seen of him (i check his blog pretty much weekly for a good while now, before he went on hiatus, before people misinterpreted him, before the leaks and all that stuff) He is outspoken and says it like it is. I like that :>

I've never had a problem with Jaffe and continue to frequent his blog. He's really the only developer out there who talks this much about his life and the things he loves. That being said sometimes he can be a dick. I remember posting something in his comments when he was playing MGS4. He loved it, so I posted a response saying how I actually cried during the game so of course I loved it (Yeah go ahead and laugh). However the rest of the responses were them ripping him because he enjoyed Gears 2 a little more. His next main blog post was him defending himself and shouting back at the people who dissed on him. He decided to use my personal experience of crying during MGS4 to call me basically stupid for doing so. Up until then I defended him like crazy. I still do because honestly it's one silly little thing on the internet. Things can get lost in translation with text.

Same here, I've watched enough to think I can make a judgement on his personality. I mean its not like he's putting on a show in each vblog, reading from some script or something. I honestly don't think he'd act any different on those videos than he does in real life sans any fbombing around family etc.
I have a feeling that half the people that "hate his personality" are either just saying it to be edgy, haven't watched any of his videos or are just judging him on the "painting come to life" comment or all of the above.

Keep doing what your doing, Jaffe.

I would imagine the amount of trolling and retarded comments he gets per day would get tiring after a while. It's hard not to take some things people say on the internet personally, especially some of the vile that is spouted by some 'people'.
And lol you cried during MGS4, pussy.
I kid

I miss Jaffe. His openness and direct interaction with the community was unprecedented for a developer of his calibur, though following him on Twitter made Tweetdeck a necessity

Bullshit. He wasn't born yesterday. If you're going to whore yourself out to the internets by making youtube videos in which you're bitching about your everyday life you should be prepared to face the flame baits without having a hissy fit, insulting someone that said nothing to you, or go on some pseudo internet black out.

There's a difference between being open/conversational and in being an attention whore.

I hate the "they chose this life" excuse. What, just because they do something they enjoy and want to give back to their fans they have to have this perfect personality in which no insult can harm them? Just because they have public access videos that automatically means they must have monk-like qualities all of a sudden? They are still human beings after all and are governed by emotions. This defence also in a way attempts to justify the pricks baiting them as if they are not at fault.

Thats kind of how it goes with most games released in the west.

The more I think about it, I'm guessing its going to be a reboot to the franchise, under just the title Twisted Metal. Or Twisted Metal ____. No numbers involved. I'm also curious as to how big their team is.

Well, like Jaffe said...IF they are making TM, atleast I'm right so far about it being a reboot. Here's to hoping I'm right about its primary focus being multiplayer features.

The problem is the remakeability of Twisted Metal is kind of low, the concept is pretty old and there really isn't a market for vehicle combat games anymore.

Maybe it'll be a God of War clone with cars

But if it's still a shooter, hopefully it has a cover system. We all know you can't have shooting without cover no more

They aren't making a Twisted Metal that's in the same style of TM-Black. As Jaffe has said it's going to be a reboot of the series.

Well the genre simply doesn't exist anymore. Which, like Jaffe mentioned, it would have to be a reboot, taken in a somewhat new direction. Gameplay-wise things have to change a good deal as the old formula feels pretty old. There is a lot that could be done, especially with the way the cars and weapons look, act, function, etc... And one of its best features - fucking with the environment - could only be better now. Mostly though, the genre went unexplored in online multiplayer. Black had it, but it wasn't near as robust as nearly every PS3/360 game released these days.

The problem is that vehicle combat will always be clunkier than on-foot due to vehicle controls being less responsive by nature compared to on-foot which is way more on-the-dime and can incorporate things like platforming and jumping without generous ramps, whether it's vehicles or robots, if they're making an arena combat game, it's just not going to be able to compete with on-foot shooters, hence the problem.

I think the mechanics can still work but they're going to have to add more depth to the formula to get any traction in today's market. Of the car combat games, I76 is the best model for a remake because it had elements that are only now becoming prominent in action games, over a decade later. Things like a mature plot with great writing, an rpg-like parts scavenging system, and huge open environments.

Vehicle combat games have two things going against them, one is vehicles have no personality despite having drivers, you simply can't show real-time reactions, second vehicle will not be as responsive as characters or will have as big of a moveset.

Ok guys how about this:

Death Race + Pursuit Force + Trackmania x Burnout= Dave's new game

You hijack a nearby enemy car while going through a loop da loop roadway before your other car crashes dramatically in slow motion into another car, pick up a missile power up and shoot the car debris out of the way right before you complete the rotation.

You can't script a cool moment in MP because everything would feel canned, you can only enable it via giving the player the necessary game mechanics, and slow motion would not work in MP.

How exactly does the genre not exist anymore? Nobody can say that since nothing major in the genre has been released since Black. No, I don't count Head On. The genre is Twisted Metal and pretty much always has been. They nailed the design with Black which was the best game in the entire franchise both in terms of gameplay and visual/art design. Who's to say that it can't work in todays market? Some other game genres people thought can't work anymore are doing just fine.

Fuck, it's crazy vehicles blowing the shit out of each other and the game world. With todays hardware they could do some great things. There's always room to evolve, but they sure as hell don't need to change the game style completely. Twisted Metal is fast and furious. It's unique and I'd rather play that over the rash of fps' and gears clones out there.

Who knows. I'm more than happy to continue playing Twisted Metal Black again and again anyways. If they do reboot the franchise I'll take a wait and see approach. For me Black was everything I ever wanted from this series. Hell, I still play the original Twisted Metal every few months. They hold up quite well despite what some people seem to think.

I'm very interested to see if the genre can be evolved. I don't think a simple graphics overhaul will suffice for what vehicle combat used to be. Hopefully Jaffe knows how to evolve the genre. That's why he gets paid the big bucks.

Kratos, but as a car. :lol I can imagine it now, Kratos car gutting other cars and then wearing their engines. :lol

I actually haven't either. I was a Vigilante 8 person back in the PS1 days.
I played TM II and then Vigilante 8 came along, and I found it to be a better game. Then Twisted Metal: Black appeared out of a cloud of awesome and it's still one of my favourite games of all time. GODDAMN that game was good.

One thing about it bothered me though, I got the censored European version, so no shooting down airplanes , and no burning dudes escaping from their freshly exploded wreckage. What a pity.

Eat Sleep Play has a contract with Sony for 3 exclusive games. If the game Jaffe's working on turns out not to be Twisted Metal PS3 (please be!) then one of the other games can be.

Also, is Scott Campbell who's co-running the studio with Mr. Jaffe THE Scott Campbell (The Comic Book artist)?

I never got into Twisted Metal back then, the only car combat game i played frequently was Interstate 76 on PC, which was absolutely amazing. :D Vigilante 8 was good too, but half of its characters and vehicles were copied from Interstate 76. :lol

But i played TM "a couple" of years later again and understand why it was so hyped back then.
I would really like to see a TM game which fully uses the PS3 hardware, epic weapons, great special effects, lots of stuff going on etc.

P.S.: I like Jaffe. ;)

Warhawk didn't contain itself to planes. I'm doubting Twisted Metal will contain itself to cars even though that'll remain its main draw

That's what i'm expecting. They should make it where you don't want to be on foot though by making the weapons relatively weak against vehicles. Add a bunch of destruction also along the lines of TM2, but obviously on a bigger and more detailed scale.

you know - the vigilante games were interstate games. they were the official console spin offs to be precise... ~_~

Is sony still the publisher for this game? If yes I'm amazed Sony could have greenlighted another Twisted Metal game. These games only sell in America, don't they? Strange decision on a business perspective if confirmed...

Hey man, I teared up a bit during mgs4 also. I think it was act 3's omg like revelations, or the overflow of nostalgia that got my eyes watery. Maybe it was both and then some. I wish I could erase my memory of the game to go through all that again.

Man you guys are all about sales-age and such. Twisted Metal is a great IP, I loved the mess out of twisted 2, and black also. The thing about black is the AI was out for your blood, and only yours. Calling All Cars kinda have the same tendency to focus on the main player while giving passes to the AI team.

Thinking of the possibilities of a PS3 Twisted metal is awesome to me. Blowing up the Eiffel Tower could make the PS1's look like it was made of building 2 building blocks I figure. Not to mention the possibility of a fully destructible environment. Until good info is present I can dream.

i used to live in the middle east when twisted metal 2 came out. it was wildly popular. i think almost all my friends played TW2 back then. It was the first game on the ps1 that made us all go 'wow'

that market is now in their early twenties and thirties. for sony and jaffe to have any credible success with the new game they need to market the new twisted metal as a new reboot and essentially launching it as a new ip of sorts. the majority of current ps3 install base of 17-18 year olds have probably never heard of twisted metal. so to market this game this has to be taken into account. the game should be marketed to fresh blood and not to old timers like us

Well that's because Phil Harrison is bat shit bag of snakes insane. I am surprised Sony would take a gamble on a new Twisted Metal, but considering some of Jaffe's comments, I'm guessing they're building it with a relatively small budget.

Sony owe Jaffe for God of War anyway, he should be able to do whatever the fuck he likes.

I admire the way Sony will support ambitious projects that don't seem like they will get a whole lot of sales or appeal to a very niche market.
