David Jaffe leaving Eat Sleep Play for new studio (Browser games?); ESP->iOS/Android

Man,

What an unusual vibe TM is getting

It's an mixture of indifference from both Sony and the Press, a "Hey, this is fun! -ish" response from da gamers, and a Retail hype train that has seemingly yet to leave the station

FWIW, I've fallen in love with the demo but yeah, am still worried about TM's future =(

@JustinFenico I am still WITH ESP and have not left and will not leave until we get TM launched and stick around2balance&bug fix&tune (prob

another 1.5-3 months). Still being paid with ESP paycheck, etc. But I WILL be leaving2start new game studio. Talking2peeps

about some big, huge next gen game ideas I'd love for us2make, as well as cool stuff in the browser space (action oriented, gamer centric)&

a few things in between. Once DICE wraps& game launches, it's company building time!Any game devs that want to chat joining a new SD action

game co, please gimme a shout! Talk soon! :)

I'm going to buy so many fucking copies of Twisted Metal that he will have no choice but to make a sequel! >:|

Man, who cares? Every platform for games that has ever existed has its great titles (as well as its crap), and iOs is no exception. David Jaffee is a very talented dev who'll make good stuff wherever he goes.

What does he mean when he says that he wants to get back to internal development? What's the difference between than and what he does at ESP?

Whats a SD Action game?

Sofware Developer Action Game Company? Damn you Twitter!

He lives in San Diego so he would have to travel to Utah intermittently to keep track of development.

It seems like they are parting with no rough feelings. Maybe Jaffe just doesn't want to get into iOS development.

"fun-ish"? That sentence sounds very smarmy and from what I could tell of the thread, anyone who get passed the matchmaking issues sincerely enjoyed the multiplayer.

I do hope the game gets the attention it deserves, if only because it would be quite the hit and it is stupid not to push it forward. I imagine it would be a CoD4-like experience for many gamers.

A few more notes from Twitter:

- The Sony/ESP contract was 3 games or 3 years

- Jaffe is committed to TM for the foreseeable future. Once everything is wrapped up, he will shift focus to his new San Diego based company

- He has no idea what his new company will develop first:

"I have no idea what game we'll make yet. Could be iphone, could be next gen console. Have barely done ANYTHING w/new co yet"

I bet TM will be a retail bust, at least in the eyes of Sony and expectations.

It'll sell decent, but not great.

Demo is alright, and fun.. but TM is what we expect out of a XBLA/PSN game these days, instead of a full retail release.

You expect a PSN game to have a 5+ hour single player mode (for each human character), 17 vehicles, 30+ maps, an extensive custom skin creator, and a large and varied online component?

Are you talking the contents or the brand? TW is shipping with a respectable amount of content comparable to most multiplayer-centric games (e.g. Call of Duty) and it looks very well made.

Best of luck to Jaffe.

Regardless of what TM sells, it seems to be a solid game.

Do you think Sony would trust Jaffe's new company to make GOW 4 and allow Santa Monica to work on a new Next Gen IP?

TO be honest I really do not like Jaffe to much. I understand his logic and some of it I agree with but the guy speaks way to much. Especially for someone who has only done one successful series. I hope he does well in his new endeavors but I just cant take the man to serious anymore.

I don't think people know exactly how much content that game has at a glance. I think the fact that it's a car combat game, and it's depressing that people think those game are more suited to digital platforms :/

-ish is I guess for everyone outside of GAF. I mean, anyone talkin' about it?

I mentioned it at work and first response was, "yeah I heard it sucked" =(

God of War and Twisted Metal were both very successful. God of War is probably Sony's most successful franchise outside of Gran Turismo?

He's great! And the PlayStation fans like him :)

Is 5 hour singleplayer supposed to be impressive now? That sounds exactly like XBLA/PSN to me.

Sounds like they should cut some of the maps and stuff and release as a $20 download.

I may have misunderstood, but I don't think that conversation was focused on market or sales.

Ultimately what the market expects, and what sells within it will shape the sort of product that becomes available. This is a particularly powerful influence on smartphones as pricing makes mass sales neccessary for sustainability, and the way the storefronts work limits the number of titles that get enough exposure to facilitate those sales.

I'm just saying, the smartphone market is what it is. Its a scene dominated by titles that appeal to the broadest demographic possible and if you don't cater to that, you're going to have a hard time surviving.

Back in the 8-bit days it was primarily geeks selling to other geeks, believing what was so cool and valuable to them would eventually catch on in the rest of the world.

Didn't you say you have some puzzle games to play? Should probably go and do that.

It sounds like the length of your typical first person shooter campaign.

Besides annual sports games:

Action/adventure
Open world
Shooter
RPG

Pick two or more of these features and you have a $60 AAA game, regardless of quality or length. Otherwise, it should be $10-$15 and downloadable.

I don't agree with this sentiment, but it pretty much seems to be the way of things nowadays.

Was twisted metal that popular back on PS1? in terms of sales? I think the series will not do to well in this generation.

I understand the success of GoW but its not that big and is it be enough for him to speak like he does? I think hes calm down a bit ever after GoW2 and re did his focus more so on gameplay that huge base games but his attitude erks me a bit sometimes. *Shrugs* I like the Uncharted team more.

Five hours for each character.

Warhawk got a retail release and Twisted has way more content.

If I remember correctly, every console Twisted Metal game sold over $1m in North America alone. I expect this one to do the same.

Theres a demo out, maybe you could give it a try before forming an opinion.

You expect COD, Halo, GeOW, Killzone to be XBLA/PSN games too?

Anyone saying that Call of Duty titles are worthy of a disc release but this is not is pretty insulting.

CoD sells multi-millions @ $60. Doesn't matter if you think it's worthy, the pubic at large paying for it says it is.

If TM puts up the sales, then it was worthy.. but I doubt it will.
