Digital Foundry vs. The Last of Us Remastered

Impressed they managed to port something so heavily optimized for PS3 to PS4 with such solid results myself.

I didn't expect them to expend tonnes of time/effort on pushing the game even further at 30fps as the main target was obviously the 60fps (mostly) version.

Very curious to see more of their PS4 specific work with Uncharted 4.

To me, that 60fps footage looks....weird. I'd probably try it but I'm not sure I could get used to it. I'd probably stick to 30. I think it's because this is a much slower paced game, though. I've played 60fps games many times before (Gran Turismo, Forza, Nintendo games), but they don't look weird to me because I can't really tell that they're 60. Maybe it's because I've never seen them at 30 like with TLoU.

Lowest dip is 48 and the average is much above that? I'm cool with that. I have no reason to go for the 30 fps option at this point.
Yup!
In the Bloater fight (as mentioned by DF), which is the most stressful point of the game (for the engine). Expected. And yes, that's damn good :)

I was the same as you when I first saw Skyrim running on my friends PC at 60fps after I played the 360 version (30fps with dips) for more than 600 hours.

Trust me, you get used to it. It's not just a visual difference, either, it's more responsive whilst turning/looking/aiming due to their being double the frames (double the opportunity for it to register an input of your sticks).

It's quite sad. Naughty Dog managed to create a really beautiful and rock solid 60 fps game on PS2 called Jak & Daxter
J&D was not 60fps all the time.
You can find instances of drops in just about everything except games that have fixed-camera angles(and even those won't be terribly common) - and anything pre-PS3 generation didn't have the benefit of websites dedicated to frame-by-frame framerate analysis, so a lot of them went unnoticed by people that obsess about it now (ie. the whole "what you don't know" thing).

Platforms like PC also 'cheat' a lot with host-software both introducing uncontrolled framerate spikes as well as absorb them behind the game's back (leading to input variances well outside the observed framerate).

Is it August 1st yet? I want this now! Sexy TLoU goodness.

how about: oh yes, there is!

now if some people want to accept "its 60hz, unless there is shit happening" as 60hz locked,
thats their prerogative.
exactly the same goes for "yeah, sure, eye candy to the max and locked 30hz" when under load it dips too.
their prerogative to accept as "locked" also.

and like your post, I am also not referring specifically to this game, but in general!

You must've missed the part at the start (and the end) of that video where it says 30fps ;P

people need to watch the video instead of reading the quotes on the OP, the frame drops to 48 for about 3 seconds, goes back up to 60 and drops again to 48 for another 3 seconds and that's that, after that you get your usual 58 59 frames the rest of the video, very stable i have to say, this makes me very happy ;)

I'm still confused as to why people think that a game is going to run at 60 fps with no drops ever. Even CoD which is praised for its 60fps gameplay, dips when there's a ton of stuff going on.

COD is multiplat, this is a exclusive.... i guess as long as its a PS4 game...the current favored systems, short commings are ok. Now if this was a X1 game there would be some see the system is nowhere near as powerful as the PS4, the PS4 could handle this no problem. Double standards

I might pick this up when it's at like 20 bucks or something. I value gameplay over narrative and atmosphere too much to get it for any more than that.

Ugh, here we go again with the "bu... but if this was a Xbone game, THEN....!!!!!"

Here we go again... Let's break out the violins

Yawn...the old "double standards" claim. There are no double standards...because TLOUR isn't on XB1, therefore no comparison could be made that gives way to people saying such things as what you're claiming. You can't cry "double standards" on something that hasn't happened. That's like calling people hypocrites for something no one has said. You even said yourself: "if" this was an X1 exclusive. You're basing you claim off an "if", instead of a "when this happened with an X1 exclusive" (which is impossible, because TLOUR is on PS4 only).

I guess we'll find out when Halo MCC dips below 60fps.

As always, i find DF's opinions quite wrong, their bias depending on what platforms they talk about is quite obvious :/, imo.

Saw this running, and it's not worth it if you just recently played the original...

Seeing the Remaster running at 60 fps and in 30fps on a 55' tv: its very worth it- but hey, opinions-

Care to elaborate?

But before you do, remember that it was them who blew the doors off the Killzone:SF 1080p MP lie, wasn't it?
The 1080p MP lie? You mean the part where Guerilla Games told Richard Leadbetter how their multiplayer rendering works because they might have been proud of what they achieved?

"Lie", give me a break.

Oh shit, my bad, I was supposed to put 'lie' in quotation marks. I was just mentioning the fact they made an article about it in order to prove that they don't have a pro-Sony bias, because if they did, they would never have mentioned it.

Honest, non-trolling question: how are they supposed to mantain a stable 60 rate with Uncharted 4, which from what we've seen looks almost CGI if a PS3 game has dips?

Read this -

Now they are starting with something built just for PS4.

OT - Good to see performance is good as they suggested. Bodes well for their future efforts.

Loooool you will live long here....

Because was was designed for the PS3 and cell, then ported over to PS3 with minimal cost. a
And one was designed from the ground up with new hardware in mind, and a large team and budget at its disposal.

Much like HD ports of PS2 games were not always the best looking or performing on PS3. But the PS3 still gave us games like TLoU.

That shouldn't be necessary. Richard Leadbetter, just as the other contributing editors for Digital Foundry are all humans and are thus biased in ways every other human also is.

If you (the general you) want only the facts then you have to skim over the editorialization and value judgement and just stick to the evidence presented.

I've had plenty of complaints about Digital Foundry over the years but I don't think they are intentionally misleading anyone with their footage. Mistakes and errors happen, but I don't believe there are any systematic errors in one direction.

I wish they'd address more of the complaints about their articles but to be honest, having to deal with the volume of people that now care about these technical differences compared to 5 years ago is just insane.

Agreed 100%.

I was going to say "Cyborg? Post if you're okay" but well...there it is.

Don't worry buddy. You can still set it to 30 and pretend you weren't so utterly, ignorantly, embarrassingly wrong.

Seriously, what did Cyborg say? I see people keep asking questions about his well-being.
