DmC: Devil May Cry demo out on November 20th/21st [Videos available now!]

'Demons aren't scary and Dante as we knew him just wasn't cool anymore,' Ninja Theory's creative director Tameem Antonaides tells us - in a more roundabout way. And he's right on both counts.

...And stuff like this keeps on eroding what interest I may have of supporting this release. Apparently, androgynous heroes aren't "cool" anymore, but "being littered with booze and women in mission 1" is.

Watching videos doesn't help, either. There's just nothing that really serves to reel me in, with the way the current weapons look so boring and the animations look so...dull.

It's too good. So good that it negates the application of the demon pull because why use that to pull someone below when Rake can pull them up while doing damage, increasing meter and pulling multiple enemies at once.

Plus any melee weapon that has hitboxes extending beyond the screen is wonky. It works for projectile based attacks but not for physical attacks.

It's especially problematic because of how many times you can rake without penalty in the air.

...are you guys theory fighting balance in an unreleased Devil May Cry game? What's the point? Dante was retarded strong in all the other games, I beat DMC3 on DMD mode a week after release by basically mashing Stinger.

Did it take you the entire week?

Don't think this one has been posted yet.

Combos Gameplay
Thank you, let's see...

We're combat enthusiasts, we'll gladly stop theory fighting when the demo comes out, until then, it's all we can do really.

Go back to your TAC infinite teams.

Anything related to Tameem is instantly ignored and it should be.

I know, all I'm saying is you shouldn't judge the game's combat depth by the trailers, even more so considering that DmC actually wins if you do.

The difference is that the DmC videos are combat videos. DMC HD Collection released no combat videos.

You could beat DMD with any normal repeated infinitely as long as you dodged appropriately. Spamming Stinger with reckless abandon doesn't work on DMD except mostly in DMC1... and using Stinger leaves you vulnerable around the sides and behind you. Rake doesn't seem to have that issue because of that ridiculous hitbox.

Still, I don't quite remember DMC4's trailers, but I doubt you can see a siderave being done in any of them, for example. You can't judge the depth by trailers. We don't even know all the weapons we'll be able to use on the fly, and that makes a big difference...

Tameem really needs to just disappear.

We don't even know all the weapons we'll be able to use on the fly, and that makes a big difference...

All we know is that it will be fewer than originally prescribed. The fact that not all weapons have an angel and devil mode ensure that.

I don't understand how that training mode works. Is that like Mission mode where you just do the combos that are displayed (and when you do them they are checked off)? Edit: Actually it works almost exactly like Bayonetta where the moves are checked off when you have done them.

Anyway Rainstorm and Inverse Rainstorm are done by pressing X + A. Mid air X+A will do the standard Rainstorm where as on the ground X + A will do the inverse Rainstorm. Good stuff.

That's not how it works... Your weapons are either angel or demon weapons, it's not like Rebellion has Arbiter and Osiris as the Demon and Angel counterparts, you will change between your Demon and Angel Weapons (plus your guns) using the d-pad.

That's old news :P

And I think the training mode tracks the move you just did and then displays a list of where you can go from there.

I know how it works, but it's already been established that the Ifrit-copy will not have both a Demon and Angel counterpart, but will be a Demon only weapon. A lot of us originally thought that all weapons would have a Demon and Angel counterpart, leading to a ridiculous number of weapons.

Uhm, but that's quite obvious, don't know how you got that impression.

It was from an interview early on. I've been following this game pretty closely since it was announced. I know that DahBomb had the same impression that I did, so it wasn't just a fluke on my part.

Not saying it was, but I recall interviews saying that your weapons would be either Angel or Demon weapons... I even remember that they confirmed about the d-pad for changing weapons some time before they actually showed it in action. It was confirmed that it would not work like that way before they showed Eryx for the first time.

That was recent news. A long time ago (like a year ago) there were interviews where they were hinting that weapons might have both angel and demon forms (essentially multiplying weapon arsenal by 3). It's in the IGN interview.

Whatever water under the bridge. I am so starting to doubt the whole "critical mass" amount of weapons quote that Alex put out originally. Then again they did that with DMC4 too so meh.

Eryx was the first time it was confirmed. Given the control scheme, everyone assumed that you would switch weapons via D-pad and switch Angel/Devil forms of each weapon through the triggers... hence, every weapon would have an Angel and Devil form. It doesn't really matter except that there may be fewer weapons than originally expected.

EDIT: "Critical mass". That's what I was looking for.

I thought it would multiply by 3 as well, but that's because I always assumed we would have 3 Angel Weapons, 3 Demon Weapons and 3 normal weapons. I guess we'll have 3 of each and Rebellion will not be changeable.

I believe they also stated you don't start with Arbiter but you get it early during the game a long time before they showed Eryx as well, and from there you could already see that they would not be attached.

I'm quite sure it was stated before during a magazine interview with Tameem. But I may be wrong...

The Arbiter acquisition cutscene is in one of these videos. He sees a picture of Sparda and puts his hand in a hole under the pic and gets the demonic Arbiter.

I miss my Cerberus ;_;
Still hoping for an Angel nunchuks weapon.

They did say that, but Arbiter is still a "form" of Rebellion, so it's still attached. They said numerous times that Osiris and Arbiter were forms of Rebellion, "attached".

Still hoping for an Angel nunchuks weapon.

I know, but talking about a video released today wouldn't exactly prove my point lol

And nunchucks would be sweet, I kinda want a demon shield, but I would also like to have at least one fast demon weapon. If they're gonna make me use demon weapons all the time to kill those color coded enemies, they should at least give me enough variety so I can fit my playstyle using them.

Well, you can still think of it that way, you just choose which weapons you'll have attached to Rebellion at a time (without pausing the game). And I guess narrative-wise they actually are forms of Rebellion.

Shields... in a DMC game?

iGk1pIhhxLMm8.gif

We already had the Aegis Shield in DMC4 and that's all the defensive option that you need in a DMC game outside of parries/dodges/teleports/dashes.

Have people had hands on time with PSASBR yet? I imagine that they would have wanted neo-Dante in that to have representation of all his weapons.

I know, I just wish we had some form of RoyalGuard in this game, I don't really like how parries work. A shield weapon could be just that, specially when you consider that the styles are streamlined into weapons abilities.

Maybe the third demon weapon having it's launcher as a block then? It wouldn't waste a whole weapon slot with it, but it would already be better than that parry.

Rising's parry seems to work a lot better since you can interrupt what you're doing to parry, but here if you're already comboing something, you can't parry, unless it has some stupid window like Prop seems to have.

In the air it's not that much of a problem, since you can just neutral evade and it looks pretty cool as well.

It takes a while to unearth the intricacies. You can parry attacks by slashing just as you’re about to get hit, though it lacks the finesse of Royal Guard. What works better is learning the Angel and Demon dodges, done by holding the relevant button and tapping dodge just as an attack is coming in.

The window to nail the move feels a little big – again, it lacks finesse – but the reward is more obvious than the parry. A successful Angel dodge grants you temporarily invulnerability while nailing a Demon dodge momentarily powers up your attacks.

Maybe that's old news, but I didn't know that

I like how helm breaker is repeatable. Break dat helm, Dante!
It's not repeatable, he is doing enemy steps in between those Helm Breakers. A standard for the series since DMC3. Vergil is able to do Helm Breaker -> ES -> Trick -> Helm Breaker.

Maybe that's old news, but I didn't know that
It's old news. The Angel dodge works like a pseudo teleport and the Demon dodge gives you more power upon successive dodge for your next attack. Some timing is required, the demon one apparently requires a bit more.

Yeah, they showed it off in the CU playthroughs. The Angel Dodge is a phasing teleport, and the Demon Dodge powers up your next attack.

Oh, so the Angel Dodge only works when you're about to get hit? There goes my dream of using that as a teleport :(

I hope we're still getting a teleport. ninja toeri pls

I'm glad we got to see the "The Secret" area again. I have the feeling that these places are going to be the new Secret Missions. There was a large tower in the distance in the old trailer, and it looked you'll have to find and play through different secret stages to unlock it.

What ever that is.

Well, to be fair all the videos are pretty basic so far. I even remember the launch trailer (if I'm not mistaken) for DMC HD Collection showing something like like / / / several times in a row, like it was supposed to be a good combat showcase. At least compared to DMC HD, this game has much more in depth combat in the official trailers, even though it's still kinda basic.

I'm talking about all the livestream stuff too.
I even found my own exploit. Basically, the gun animation cancel anything. So you can slash, shoot slash, in quick succession.

I'm sure it was in dmc4 too but nobody bothered with it.
