Gohan being built up as having more potential means nothing now that Goten and Trunks are in the picture. Or rather, Gohan being built up as the one with the most potential means nothing now. Goten and Trunks both became SS at a younger age. Goten was 7, while Gohan was 9.

There is just a lot of inconsistency in the series.

I was mainly talking about early DBZ there, when Gohan's potential was constantly highlighted. Still, like I mentioned above, by now Goten is at least 9 years old (or, more likely, 11) and he has already fallen behind Gohan, who was a SSJ2 by that point.

I never read the manga. How did he transform? I'm curious.

We never see his first transformation, but he was already a SSJ while training with Gohan. That chapter was made rather close to the end of the Cell Saga, so I wouldn't be surprised if Toriyama already had Trunks becoming a SSJ at a young age in mind at that point.

But really I always thought it was some kind of epigenetic Saiyan thing where through great struggle and anger the genetic potential of Saiyans is turned on. After that, Goku would pass on his newly unlocked potential easier.

The issue is that according to the original Z epilogue they didn't really show interest in training and hadn't progressed significantly before the end of Z (Goten still was weaker than Mr.Buu). The same issue as Gohan, only they actually never even got to SSJ2, making them even weaker.

Goten's and Trunks appearances in the movies and Super seem to be following suit so far. They're at least as old as Gohan was in the Cell Games by now (or even older if you go by the movie dates), but don't seem to have gotten any stronger than they were in the Buu Saga. Now, that could all change in the next arc if they're part of the 5 man team for the Universe 6 arc... Although, really, I hope they aren't there.

Short on time, but basically the ep.22 summary in that (fairly real-looking image) says Tagoma gets super-strong training with Freeza (strongest in all of Freeza's army, so apparently he's taking red dude's place in this version), beats up on Gohan and co., then swaps bodies with frog!Ginyu to get even more powerful (this makes it sound like he's stronger as a frog, but maybe the idea is that Ginyu get stronger swapping with him?)

Also, according to ep.21's summary, Freeza promises to give a planet to whichever henchmen of his kills Kuririn. The rest all looks the same as RoF. Freeza's still training for 4 months, etc.
