Ok, I just watched it and it was a good episode. It looked pretty good by Dragon Ball standards.

Some of you need to go back and rewatch DBZ. It was soooo much worse than this.

Looks a little better in motion than these screengrabs led me to believe, but this was still the most inconsistent animation so far. Mostly in the action scenes, but not just that - look at Gregory's wildly fluctuating size.

Still, some of it looked fine. This series of punches looked pretty good to me. Reminds me of the thick outlines in the last episode, which had great animation.

Fun episode overall, not much deviation from BoG in this one. They are still laying the groundwork for the bingo song hype...

this is complete garbage by dbz standards

the old dbz stuff was not much worse than this. back then, the stuff looked bad because it was off model (see the freeza/trunks comparison). today, the in-between shots are literally scribbles by a 5 year old. you never really saw that back then.

So I haven't watched any of this yet, but Im wondering, for you people not from Japan and watching it streamed or whatever, how do you guys know that its getting subtitled correctly and accurately? Blind faith? Can we even discuss this here? lol.

I just take everything with a grain of salt and compare it to Battle of Gods so far.

I just assume that the translators are giving me at least the basic gist of it, which is good enough for me.

animation quality aside..
this is dragonball at its lowest.
with an episode being full of nothing, and basically each episode so far could have been 3 minutes to 5 minutes each, and absolutely nothng of value would be lost...

I liked the episode. The animation was inconsistent but it's not a big deal.

One minor complaint is that the scene where Goku is trying to speak to Beerus "properly" was funnier in the movie. In the show they kind of messed up the comedic timing.

Don't worry. 10 years from now we'll get Super Kai.

There's a good video to watch (in spanish) about the show's different art styles:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nk-fmKi1rc&list=FL2BMXFHb6rPAXTt5UuZ1XZA

Jump at 3:50 for one of the reasons why I've always been disappointed by Dragon Ball GT. The Cell/Frieza fight was such a missed opportunity, especially in terms of animation.

For anyone remotely interested on what the video is about, it's just an analysis on the different drawing styles of each artist in Dragon Ball. The analysis sounds actually pretty good (for someone with little knowledge about animation, mind you), but I think it has little to do with this episode. The bottom line is that different artists have different styles, and that things such as Goku with massive green pupils also add to the mood. He appears like that whenever he's relaxed or in a fun scene, but you never see that kind of art in a fight.

The issue with this episode for me is that some of the scenes looked like I could draw them. It's very low quality that goes on for several seconds. It's a mixed bag. But I've liked it anyways.

A much more enjoyable episode than last weeks imo. Although I thought you guys were exaggerating at the quality of the animation but wow :lol

yeah this is definitely Toei's DBZ with Goku acting all heroic and concerned at the end. AT never liked how the anime portrayed Goku as a much more typical goody superhero character.

The story itself is really good, but I'm really not a fan of how this show has been handled. So far it's just an inferior version of the movie, which is a shame. They shouldn't have bothered retelling it.

In 10 years we will forget about all this and speak fondly of the show as a whole, but it's pretty painful to watch right now.

What a waste. First fight of the series and they put the shit animators on it.

The series hasn't been especially good looking as is, but this was just ugly.

worst part about that is one episode was pretty much the greatest looking dbz episode of all time:

I think it is tied with the episode in which Dodoria kills a bunch of nameks, the one when Vegeta fights Recome, or the first episode of kid buu against ssj3. All those really stand out above the rest.

edit: also the episode in which piccolo meets and fights cell.

They definitely spent all of the budget on the SJJ3 parts. I was cringing through the animation until it got there and suddenly got pretty good. Then back to terrible once it went to Earth.

SSJ2 Goku against Kid Buu also looked excellent.

As much of a mess it was writing-wise, Buu saga had a lot of great fight animation.
