Dragon Quest Builders demo out now

You can, but it isn't required or even recommended since the camera doesn't exactly play nice with it.

When you go inside houses with a roof, the camera doesn't automatically swoop down to where you can see yourself inside. You have to manually zoom in, which is a bit of a pain.

Thank you! I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to find particulars on that question. Nice to have the option to build a roof, even if it makes things a little janky.

I think I phrased it badly earlier in regards to changing the holy symbols:

They changed them in localization for the NES games as I recall. Then later on with Enix's GBC ports and DWVII they left the cross alone. From DQVIII onwards until now they were changed to different symbols in the ORIGINAL versions of the games, meaning localization maintained parity. This is the first modern case I know of for changing the symbol from a cross to a trident, though it wouldn't surprise me if this cropped up in DQI-III on mobile.

EDIT: As an aside, if I had to choose between keeping crosses and keeping the sword T, sword T every mother fucking day. The cross is seen as a generic European holy symbol, but that T is a characteristic trait of the series and to finally get it here by unifying the names only to get a Nintendo recommendation on it "being childish" to make it vanish on Nintendo and Mobile is maddening (on a nitpicky trivial level, but still!)

I just got to the end of the demo on PS4, it took me a couple hours. I thought it was a pretty cool game. Nothing amazing, but certainly enjoyable and I can see myself letting hours slip by without noticing while playing. I have it pre-ordered and I'll keep it that way.

I did have a few issues though. The button layout sucks, and isn't changeable. There's no single button that let's you strafe to place blocks easily. You can use L1 and R1 at the same time to do it, but you have to let go to stack them automatically like it does normally.
Finally, it feels like you're swinging a toothpick, because your attack range is super small.

Still, I enjoyed my time and I look forward for the full game. And hey, it's always worth supporting Dragon Quest in the west.

Edit: Oh, I forgot we can change button mappings on the actual PS4, but is that system wide?

You get better weapons/tools with better range, but it stays relatively less wider than most games due to how the enemy movesets play out. The good news is that you learn skills and can place traps and such.

DAMN, very impressive!

How'd you get the recipe for stairs? I just "beat" the demo by building the teleportal and I still don't have it. Did you just explore the whole island until you came across a material that gave you the recipe or something?

EDIT: Ahh, nevermind. It looks like you destroyed the stairs that were already in the town and just placed them somewhere else. I thought you crafted 'em!

While I like the premise of a sandbox-jrpg, the lack of online multiplayer really makes me shy away from getting this right away.

Yeah, if you can find out what the recipe for stairs are, let me know. I'm dying for them.

I'm supposed to build a Mason's Workbench but I don't have the recipe for it. How do I build it? It's for use with a blueprint in the beginning.

Are you trying to make the villagers workplace? If so just break the Mason workbench you have and set it in the right place on the blueprint

Bust the one there and take it into your new building and build it as per the blueprint. That should do the trick.

Edit: I was one minute too slow... Hah

Surprised that there was a demo today, but very glad to get a preview of what to expect in 2 weeks. Love the aesthetics of this game and the music... Sugiyama is my favourite composer of all time. The game just clicked with me and it kind of gives off an Actraiser feel or vibe to me... A compliment, to be sure.

It really feels like X and O should be swapped. I really hope there is a modifiable control scheme in the final game. It's baffling to me how rare this is still.

Sigh I knew this game was too good to be true.

Yeah, as soon as I started playing I knew I was going to love it. Definitely picking this up day one.

I also agree with everyone else that the controls should have been changed/there should be an option to change them. Circle for jump I can get behind, but making X the menu button is just a headscratcher.

I never played a Dragon Quest game before, but this was fun. The art style is really nice and appealing. The camera needs some work, though. I built a house with a roof over it and it was hell to handle. Besides that, I don't really have any complaints. It feels more unique than I expected. Lack of any kind of multiplayer is baffling to me.

Smart move releasing a demo of this, I didn't think it would be as much fun as it is.

The base building reminds me a bit of MySims.

You know that you can change the buttonconfiguration via Ps4//Vita settings? Not exactly the same, sure, but it works well.

My dirt town is starting to come together.

How are you guys destroying the save?

I thought it auto saved and I guess it doesn't. I've gotta start over, but I don't want to do that tutorial again. I think I'm gonna buy this, but I've gotta voice my disgust one last time about those controls. I feel crazy because I keep expecting the buttons to do what they do in almost every other game lol.

Super fun game though.

Made a nice house for Pippa and me with two beds beside and a tiny hovel for Rollo and then when I got back home Rollo was in my house with my girl! I had to sleep in the crappy house I made for Rollo. Welp!

This was real fun. However, do we know if the save data will carry over to the full game? I thought I heard that the JP version did not allow that.

So trying to download this demo.

First have to turn on my ps4, go through all the damn updates, only to get to the ps store, can't find the demo. Can only find the demo through the ps store on my pc, queue it up to download, not on my download list. Instead ps4 wants me to download a Fallout 4 update.

What a pain in the ass.

It was in the "Free" tab on the store. Otherwise, you can't search it.

Throwing this in spoilers just in case but I'm wondering
if this game takes place after an alternate ending where the hero from DQ I accepts the Dragonlord's offer.

I haven't followed too closely so maybe it's general knowledge.
I'm spoiling the answer just in case
It does. I haven't followed the western previews much, but that basic premise was in the Japanese previews.
The intro makes it kind of clear if you played DQ1 or at least very heavily hints at it.

Bildrick is a funny name for the hero too.

So, the demo ends when your build the portal? Damn, well, time to go back and create a megacity out of dirt. I really enjoyed the demo when it was out in JP, and I enjoyed it more now that i can actually understand the text.

The price tag alone makes me wanna pre-order it. I'll check the demo out and see, it looks like a japanese version of Minecraft (which is a great thing)

Yeah I eventually got it... what a frustrating mess the ps menus and store is.

The game is awesome though. I've always thought a more focused narrative minecraft would be great, and here we are.

The controls are fairly goofy and I can't decide if I would prefer first person or not, the zoomed out lets you have a better sense of whats going on, but makes placing blocks not as seamless.

But really great stuff.

"Build" + "Erdrick" = Bildrick

The use of the dungeon music for the night cycle was pretty brilliant. Makes the night legitimately scary.

Does the full game prevent you from building over water too, or is that just a demo limitation?

I like that this game is also heavily influenced by tower defense games. I'm excited for the full version.

That cool and the nice thing about the full game is that you can turn all those dirt blocks into stone or any other material with a special item that let's you change those.

Yes, the way the full game works is that you get several small areas and those teleporters allow you to traverse between them. So the demo ends there because that teleporter takes you to the next desert area. Even though you can see the next area across the water you can't actually build a walk way between them you need to use the teleporters.

Yeah, game is suprisingly runnig well on Vita. It's not native res but not NFSMW bad, so that's nice. The music is pretty good too !

You can't craft a boat and sail to other islands? That's a bummer.

Just select the games tab on the left hand side, then scroll down to the demos tab.

Downloaded it last night. Looking forward to trying it later.
