Sony to start production of PS4 at end of 2011, say Taiwan makers

Sony will have Taiwan-based partners begin production of PlayStation 4 (PS4) featuring body movement-based control like Kinect at the end of 2011 for launch in 2012, according to Taiwan-based component makers.

Foxconn and Pegatron Technology, assemblers of PS3, will undertake assembly of PS4 as well, the sources pointed out. The planned shipment volume of PS4 in 2012 is at least 20 million units, the sources indicated.

The latest Digitimes.com rumor has hit the Mac web again. The claim this time is that Apple is delaying Mac OS X Leopard until October 2007,” MacRumors’ Arnold Kim blogs for Normalkid.

Kim looks at five years of Digitimes rumors reported on MacRumors over the past 5 years along with their outcomes and finds: “14 rumors total. 1 True. 10 Wrong. 2 Possible. 1 Unknown.”

Kim concludes, “I’ll leave it to the reader to decide how likely it is that this latest rumor will come true.”

this is from 2007 btw. http://macdailynews.com/2007/03/23/apple_to_delay_leopard_digitimescoms_poor_apple_rumor_accuracy/

Would have made a great E3 conference, only for the reactions. :D
But yeah for a 2012 launch, they would probably have officially announced it already.

Shipped, not sold. The 360 has sold something like 50 million units, but obviously that's over several years.

20 million shipped in the first year might not be so unrealistic if they have a particularly aggressive marketing plan worked out or are expecting it to sell fast. Wasn't there a rumor that the PS4 was going a cheap-and-profitable route ala the Wii? Or was that shot down?

If the Vita is any indication, they are moving away from 24 months hype cycles and going the Nintendo/Microsoft route of launching the same year as it is being announced.

Do they mean Kinect-like controls? Either way, I stopped going to that website for a reason. Thanks for the reminder.
That's in the title of that Kotaku article.

Anyways, I can't wait for Sony's response... Which I'm sure will be something like this...

Becauce of the WiiU we will see a lot of "rumoers" about the PS4 and Xbox 3602. Anyone thinks Sony and Microsoft will respone to Nintendo and sites just bring out fake news to catch some clicks.

FAKE. But for the sake of discussion:

Kinect-like huh? Can they just rip off their tech like that? You'd think Microsoft would have patented the bejezus out of that control type.

Anyway, if production is starting in 2011 they would have announced it already. I honestly can't see them announcing it until E3 2012, earliest.

If it's launching at the end of 2012 we should be hearing actual hardware rumors exceedingly soon.

If they intend to manufacture it in six months it must essentially be locked.

Does not matter what the source is, Kotaku has been proven time and again to be utterly incapable of even the simplest analysis and bullshit detection.

Remember Triologies and whatnot.

didn't Microsoft copy Sony's Eyetoy in any case? Probably existing peripherals before that aswell

The only way this story seems feasible is if the company is just generalizing that camera->person detection is "Kinect like". A built in EyeToy or similar. But 20 mill consoles to be produced next year... something would have leaked or been announced at this time.

Some components factory insiders apparently leaked some details to DigiTimes which Kotaku picked up on.

PS4's to start manufacture at end of this year.
20 million manufactured by end of 2012.
System has Kinect controls.
Foxconn and Pegatron Technology will assemble the PS4.

I have noticed digitimes is fairly inaccurate in the past.

Their stories have about a 50/50 chance of being correct.

I remember once (couple years ago?) digitimes reporting as fact that MS had ordered a crapload of Blu Ray drives for 360, for example. Obviously that never ended up happening.

Edit: Aha a little googling even found the story: http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20080331PD214.html

They could advertise it as the evolution of EyeToy. Sounds better than Sony's version of Kinect.

Does the iPad 2 have an OLED? I'm looking through their old rumors.

Rumors about OLED iPad resurface
Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 13 July 2010]

Apple reportedly plans to launch its second-generation iPad, using 5.6-inch and 7-inch OLED panels, as soon as in the fourth quarter of 2010 with Compal Electronics having a chance to receive the orders, according to sources from component makers.

The sources noted that Apple has recently placed new iPad orders to Taiwan-based component makers for the fourth quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011 with 9.7-inch, 5.6-inch and 7-inch models all included.

The 9.7-inch model will see some minor changes, while Apple will add Chimei Innolux (CMI) as one of its panel suppliers.

The new 5.6- and 7-inch iPads will mainly target the e-book reader market, separating them from the 9.7-inch model, which mainly targets multimedia entertainment, the sources stated.

Although market watchers originally expected Pegatron Technology to land iPad orders from Apple, the sources indicated that the orders have actually been grabbed by Compal. However, Compal declined to comment on specific clients

The sources also stated that since Samsung Electronics and LG Display have recently been throwing heavy resources into the development of OLED panels, costs are dropping gradually and with Apple's brand image and high average selling price (ASP), Apple should have no problem adopting OLED panels, which have higher price than standard panels, into its devices.

Commenting on the rumors, Digitimes Research senior analyst Mingchi Kuo pointed out that the largest OLED maker, Samsung Electronics', current OLED capacity is not even enough to supply the company's own handset products; therefore, the capacity is unlikely to be enough to supply Apple's new devices for the fourth quarter of 2010. Tight OLED capacity may ease in the second half of 2011, Kuo added.

Kuo also noted that Compal is unlikely to strive for orders from Apple, since manufacturing gross margins on Apple's products are at electronic manufacturing service (EMS) levels, which is a lot lower than notebook OEMs can accept.

20 million units shipped in the first year is hugely unrealistic. If it failed to become one of the fastest selling systems of all time they'd potentially have a ton of stock just lying around on shelves, and inevitably being discounted by stockists so they could get them out the door in a reasonable time-frame.

No, 20 million shipped in launch year is completely ridiculous. It would have to be a Wii circa 2008 success for that to be a reasonable figure.
