Endless Ocean, official quiet long river thread (Amir0x approved)

Haha yesterday my sister found a Californian Sea Lion on the boat and saw me pat it, she took the remote and played petted and poked it for literally 10 minutes.

I wish the people animated as well as some of the animals in this game.

I STILL cant seem to locate the
beluga in the ruins
I got all the
nephrite pieces and read the tablets
but I got a email that says they are working on translating, but no followup yet for several days. Do I continue waiting for the email or do I need to do something else?

Bought this first day because I wanted to do a review on it.

It's a great game, actually, and this genre is definitely underappreciated. I now have some interest in other games like this, such as Afrika for PS3.

Remember, the next game of this type is coming out this spring from Majesco - Wild Earth: African Safari, the Wii port of this game: http://www.wildearthgame.com/us/ - which actually recieved rather good reviews, so this is one port I am looking forward to, although I am sad the promised "cooperative multiplayer" will not be online like in Endless Ocean. Together with Afrika and the new PS3 diving game we might be getting a photo-shooting game renaissance.

I have still to pick up Endless Ocean, so I have one question to those who own it:
Does it mayhaps contain a nautilus? I assume it has octopi and squid, but a nautilus would round out the tentacle department.
:lol

I recently bought this game after hearing some good things about this game and I didn't even expect to like it. But luckily this turned out to be a great purchase for me. Its one of my favorite Wii games now. Never knew that exploring the sea could be so fun.

That's kind of the approach i had to it and i've had a blast, unfortunately i've already beaten it (well i've seen the credits and i've been everywhere in the map), been a while since i've played a game that religiously now that i think about it.

The
ghost ship/ocean's graveyard
was pretty disappointing though considering as soon as i got the game i saw a pic of it and had been trying to hunt it down.

I don't know if i'll have the patience to 100% but i can see myself coming back to it a lot over the course of wii's lifespan :) wish there was more gear to change between though, I've got tons of suits and gloves but 2 tanks and only 1 pair of flippers :( i need more diving requests dammit lol

you get more equipment by finding lost relics/items. Not really by honoring dive requests.

Will I enjoy this game if I HATE all water levels on games? Super Mario Galaxy's swimming? Bleh!
the swimming in this game is extremely easy. Just point the wiimote at the sensor bar/screen and hold down B. press the "-" button to set automatic swimming without having to hold down the button. I dont particularly enjoy the controls in most games involving swimming either but I spent over 30 hours underwater in this game. Take that as you will.

Do you like diving/snorkeling/nature? If yes, then you'll enjoy it. If not, you may still enjoy it, although noone can say for sure. Try to test-play it at a friends' house or at the shop.

Are you more of an action-oriented gamer? What's your stance on exploration - e.g. what do you think about the Metroid Prime series? What's your experience with sandbox-type games? Do you suffer from slight attacks of OCD whenever there's something to be collected or catalogued, or are you more of an ADD case in constant need of (visual/aural/etc) stimulants?

Keep in mind: we cannot decide this for you, really. Read through this thread, look at the pretty pictures, watch some of the awesome movies, and then try to decide.

...but buy it nonetheless out of the goodness of your neogaf-trusting heart. :D
What'd you expect I'd say in this EO appreciation thread? ;)

I do like exploring and nature, but I didn't like Metroid Prime because of the action elements, if that makes sense. If I want action, I'll play an FPS.

I am in need of something relaxing and that doesn't take too much brain power to play after a tough day at work, so maybe this is the answer.

But about sandbox games, I usually get bored of them because there's no goal or progress. Is this going to be a problem with Endless Ocean?

I don't like sandbox games either. I'm not into GTA and Crackdown was fairly meh (I got bored). Also, I really like just looking around in Metroid Prime for what it's worth.

I'm enjoying Endless Ocean a lot. I don't think it's "oh my god greatest thing ever" but I definitely can't wait to sit down after work and play it. I've already put 8 hours in over a few days - it just keeps drawing you back in. Truly a great way to burn time and relax.

There's actually a constant stream of things do like requests for dive tours and photos of particular fish and then there's other things to do like train your dolphins and just dive to discover things, fill in your fish book, take photos for yourself and so on.

I thought it would almost all just diving to look around (which you can do), but I'm surprised to find that missions actually come pretty constantly and you receive new equipment like camera and so on and new things to dress up in (suits, diving vest, flippers, hairstyles etc...) all the time.

No shortage of things to do basically.

I hate to derail the thread a bit and ask, but would anybody be willing to dive online with me? I had some people lined up, but so far each one has fallen through and this is the last area of the game I need to try out before I can review it.

And, since I'm on the topic, can you dive with people outside your country - if I have the friend code of someone in, say, England, can we still do it, or do we have to be in the same region (I'm in the U.S.)?

well, EO is not you average sandbox game - it's a sandbox-style game with _tons_ of atmosphere. i doubt you've ever come across such a sandbox game before. and i personally find lots of adventure in it, but that depends on your personal understanding of the subject. if adventure for you == near-death experiences, then EO will not feel adventurous to you. if you think that the old point-n-click desktop 'quests' are adventures, though, then yes, EO is full of adventure. exploring places, finding stuff, doing little tasks - all that in alwesome atmosphere and the occasional breath-taking moments.

on a sidenote: has anybody else experienced a guiding dive where the kind of fish the client insists to see actually can't be found at that place?

i had a very weird guided dive where
that will guy wanted to see a poweder-blue something (the name escapes me, sorry) at the bluff rocks, but that place happened to be the only one where tha powder-blue fish was nowhere to be seen. i went to all the other atol-style locations known to me immediately after that dive, and that fish was abund in schools there!

Just "beat" the main quest. Very satisfying experience and one hell of a deal for $30. I still haven't come across some of the more rare creatures but I plan to explore some of the mentioned areas later.

I've had similar experiences, blu. I believe it has happened twice now, but I think it may be a matter of placing your boat so it covers a variety of areas. Of course, you never know what they will want to see, so you could end up screwing yourself that way...

Finally made it to the
sperm whale
in
Deep Valley
. What an amazing scene, just really epic and awe-inspiring. It's been a while since a scene in a videogame made me feel that way. Also, in no small part due to the amazing song that plays during that part, which is the titular song from Karl Jenkins' "Adiemus IV: The Eternal Knot", an album I've had sitting around for two or three years now. So, you imagine I was more than a little surprised to hear it play during that part...

I was going to check this out at work today but we only have one copy, so instead I checked out this.

Thank you. They are one of my favorite marine animals, and make me anticipate this game ever more.

Does anybody have any anecdotal stories on how well this game is selling?

its horrible... and not because of its content, its because the game doesn't work. The controls don't work... you can't even move around with the analog stick. And no its not because of motion controls or anything because there are non its because its the worst game I've played in my entire life. Its broken.

dissapointing :(

my daughter loved the IMAX she would have liked this

That Sea Monsters one comes out on PS2 next week, maybe controls will be better for it there? Shame though, as I wanted to buy it along with EO when I finally find a wii.

The multiplayer is regionlocked. <insert 20 page rant over the stupidity of this issue>

So, you see... I'm from Europe. You're from Mars. We can't possibly dive together. :'(

What I CAN tell you, however, is that IIRC only the host gets benefits like new fish entries etc... the visitor just gets a fun dive out of it.

Also :( :( :( about the Sea monsters game. What a waste.

i dont think you understand... the controls don't work... its not a wii thing, its that the game can't be controlled.

Well, I finally got to try it out today. Went on two dives, one which was hosted and one which I hosted myself. I noticed the benefits thing you mentioned right away - also, I could only choose from the host's music and see his info (whereas I had all three pages on the Coelacanth, he had one...and I could only see that).

Also, I've not been persuaded before that the Wii needs voice chat...but this game convinced me. It was absolute piss trying to communicate about where to go next using those preset commands and underwater pen.

P.S. What does IIRC mean?

I've had regular small play sessions of this, and it's fantastic. I LOVE night diving. Just explored a bit of the
Mermaid Tunnel
, got an excellent shot of a Monkfish (fugly yet delicious fellow). I have no knowledge of anything photography related though, can someone tell me what all the fancy adjustments do?

Didnt see this before.
Same here. I tried to find a goddamned powder blue tang and all that was there was regular blue tangs. but blue != powder blue so OMG FAILURE.

the first setting (two icons on the left end of the bar) is focus point, the second setting (four icons on the righ end of the bar) is aperture stop.

the former allows you to make you automatic focus pick a point of your choice in your field of view (small red rect) , versus leaving it centred (small white rect).

the latter is a measure of your lens' 'light throughput' - determines amount of light per exposure time, and also affects your depth of field (DOF). as EO does not have exposure time as such (shots are instantaneous), aperture affects only your DOF here. as what 'depth of field' is per se, you can always check a compehensive article on it - try wikipedia. i'll just say here that a smaller F-number corresponds to a more shallow DOF.

Well, I don't think it is an instant failure. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure I've gotten all five stars on a dive without finding the specific fish mentioned. I just swim around to all the key spots and important animals and, even if they are still asking about a specific fish, I still take them up whenever Kat says they are "thrilled". Still, it is annoying.

i can confirm that (sorry that i did not mention it in my original post) - failure to spot the clients's whish-fish is not an insta-failure. i still got five stars on that powder-blue tang (thanks, Innotech) dive, but i worked my butt off to satisfy that pesky client. showed him tons of stuff (frankly, way more interesting that the fuckin powder-blue-with-a-cherry-on-top tang too), and did not surface until he made the 'yes' gesture a couple of time.

actually, i think a client's wish-fish counts as 2 or 3 points toward the final score of max 5 - i did surface once shortly after i had shown the client their wish-fish without any other exhibits, and the dive was scored as "3/5". basiclally, a failure to spot their fish means you have to make up for those 3/5s elsewhere.

I know I saw it in this thread at one point, but I've combed the last few pages and can't find it. Someone mentioned some program about attatching multiple MP3 files together? Anyone know of a good program to do that?

I just got an SD card today and am trying out the cust. soundtrack feature. Just wanted to listen to more than one song at a time since most of my dives tend to be an hour. ^___^

Thanks in advance!

Ha, 16 pages in and I'm making my first post :lol

Anyway, I've been playing the game for the last week or so and like it quite a bit. I was a bit disspointed at first, but now that I'm a ways into it I've changed my tune. Definitely not something I feel like putting in hours and hours at a stretch (like Galaxy), but an hour here and there is more than fine. I love that I can lay on the couch and enjoy the game with just one hand and the remote :D

Thanks to all of you who put up mixes for us to try. Although the default tune is OK, the ones with vocals are about enough to make me kill myself with the remote...

Only negative for me: Nintendo's lack of marketing for this title, both in NA and Japan. Why spend the money to have it developed and then just drop the ball? If you ask me, the same folks who like Wii Sports and Wii Fit would like this one if they knew about it and had a chance to play it.

Oh well. At least I get to play it :D

When I do a guide, I like to keep showing my client different fish and feed them and stuff like that until I get a message saying that they are thrilled, hehe.. I love it when they are like "This is the best dive ever!"

There is a great segment about this game on this week's 1up Show! Nice to see some praise for it instead of bashing and calling it a non-game..

I just think you need to shake it for a couple sustained seconds, sorta like petting fish to get them identified, I'm not positive though..
