I like the world and scenario a whole lot, but man is the melee system a shitfest. Calling it a "system" is almost to much already - you do nothing but flail around, spam the attack button and hope you hit someone. It's not fun at all.

You could have actually implemented a system that is raw, brutal and immediate, without just doing this because to me this isn't raw or brutal, it's silly and completely pulls me out of the world.

Yeah I actually really hate the combat in the harder outposts. As soon as you get discovered it always always turns into a clusterfuck and my pet seems to die awfully quickly.

I think it's used just to stop people exploring the north too early into the game, the opening 4+ hours encourage you to not roam too much.

totally.

But i don't get the point of the in-between upgrade of clothing. which i had for exactly 1.7 seconds.

but then again:
Winter Clothing Upgrade 1 – You must bring Karoosh to the village to unlock this recipe. Requires Karoosh’s Hut level 1, 4x Wolf Skin. Cold Meter drains in 10 minutes.
Winter Clothing Upgrade 2 – Requires 2x White Wolf Skin, 2x Rare Yak Skin. Offers full protection from the cold

i must have simply been lucky with finding 2 rare Yaks, early in the game.

You can't tame turtles?

Damn.

Just wondering who's missions are the ones to progress the story? atm I'm just randomly doing them all...

Try not to look at them as "main missions" and "side missions".

Your goal in this game is to reunite your people, rebuild your village and become a strong tribe. All missions work towards that goal.

Sorry to ask again but figured I would. Can't really play the game again for a few days so hopefully I can get a solid answer before jumping back in. Sorry again for asking.

Not far at all into the game. Just basically unlocked the owl and tame white wolfi have a few saved up skill points. Would I be wise to drop those points into those asap? The ability to kill with the owl (especially elite enemies) sounds badass. But not sure if it's actually worth all the skill points or better to save them for something else?

About 1 and 20 minutes into it. 4% complete.

Pros:
1. The game is absolutely beautiful. They nailed the world and setting. Everything feels hot and humid. The lighting kind of reminds me of Far Cry 2.

2. They put you straight into the game. The story is pretty straight forward, not too many or long cut scenes.

3. The animals populating the world really bring it to the life.

4. Weaponry and/or lighting things on fire is a cool puzzle solving concept.

Cons:
1. Is there weather in this game? Huge negative here if so.

2. Combat. Poke poke, swipe swipe, enemy fall over. I am spoiled after playing Dying Light i guess.

3. Hunter Vision. First mission I did was an escort mission. We get ambushed by some human enemies and since everything is kind of hard to see, I turn on my hunter vision. Enemies and friends turn yellow, friend is running at me, I kill him. My village now loses a person. Awful mechanic. This needs to be patched.

Overall:
I think it is definitely a Far Cry game, so beware of fatigue. However, it improves on a lot of areas that Far Cry 4 suffered from. The world and environment is probably one of the best looking that I have seen, however I still feel like I can't "play" with the it. If this game had weather and more "physics", it would be a potential game changer.

The combat also needs work considering the game emphasizes the up close and personal approach. It doesn't feel very impactful. Enemies also always seem to get a hit in regardless of my approach once I get close.

I'd recommend the title to anyone looking for a new Far Cry game or who loves to just explore in their games.

Pretty cool to see popular opinion of this game shift from "haha fuck this drivel" to "wow, this game has flaws but it's pretty great overall". I want to pick this up, but knowing that I will surely be able to grab this for 30 in a month or two is making me hold off.

I also think the cool stuff is how the villagers go out further and further for resources and you see them carrying them back to the village. Even though there is this one fucker that I had in my livestream that carried rocks back and forth for like 8 hours...which just reminds me that life back then would be utter shit unless you were indeed Takkar.

I rarely use melee except for the quests that needed it...bow,and now longbow for the win...I tried stealth a few times but I feel the game is not really set-up for that, they see you from far away even if you are crouched so you really need to sneak over close for the sneak kills.

You actually have to start in any tree to get to the better ones, I'd say maxing Takkar's tree is a good start, but read the others, and decide what kind of gameplay you want to support. Yeah owl is useful, but also makes it too easy, an you get less xp than for a stealth kill. I only use it to eliminate the ones with the horns.

I totally agree. There's so much to like here, but combat with the club is awful. The setting and era just beg or a more fleshed-out melee system, but this about as basic as you can get.

I'm submitting that one hero who brought back a rare yak skin for godhood. I only needed to find one after that.

Any tips on(last boss spoiler)
killing Batari? It takes forever to get her health down and you can't reach her, so I can only use my Bow and Arrow, which is fully upgraded,

Also, game really surpassed my expectations. I really wish this had coop though :(

I played only for a couple hours.

+ Amazing environments and setting
+ Great ambient sounds and effects
+ Love the setting
+ Fast loading

- Game is SLOW
- Combat is mediocre
- A.I. is bad

Overall I liked my experience, definitely something worthwhile. However the very slow pacing is a bit annoying.

Man, it clicked for me today. So I finally got enough skills to feel comfortable going off and exploring. I came across a "very hard" outpost way near the bottom of the map. I figured, let's see if I can be stealthy enough to actually do this without ever seeing the difficulty.

Sent my owl, dropped bees on the alarm guys and dive bombed the grunts.

Sent my cheetah and stealth killed 2 guys.

Random Lion showed up, mauled 3 guys.

Re-sent my owl, bees and dive bomb.

Chucked a spear at one guy.

Outpost freed.

This game... all of this took nearly 10 minutes of real time, and the slow pace made me feel like I was there, hiding for my life. I loved part 3, kind of liked 4, love this one. I finally feel again like being sneaky pays off in full. At first I didn't like the owl much, but now that's he's upgraded, that's mah dude!!!

Fuck me this game looks the shit! Did not expect such a huge bump in IQ and lighting. My PS4 fakes high end pc visuals pretty good lol.. just started but so far v impressed by environments and the sounds just wow. Cant wait to get stuck in more

This game is SO FREAKING HUGE, I'm about 20 hours in and just found out there are other collectibles than hand prints and cave panting. I came across a bracelet and I was like, wtf is that, there's more shit to find?

haha same thing here, I just realized that as you progress your cave completely changes.

the tiny details in this game are amazing.

Lol.
Man that never happened to me. Unlike others I died of the cold 2 or 3 times but I also refused to fast travel after awhile. I have never been a fan of that and a world like this doesn't really feel repetitive to travel back and forth. But since I was reviewing it I didn't have a lot of people to bounce ideas off of about any of this stuff either so that will be my excuse lol.

Once the game opens up and asks you to recruit the specific villagers, is that when you get the grapple hook? There's an area I want to get too that seems impossible to reach without it.

You have to recruit a certain ally, lol. Good luck, Piss Man (you will get the reference later).

My favorite weapon in FarCry 3 and 4 is the bow, so this seems like a no brainer for me. Just picked it up on PSN.

I paid the extra $5 for the digital something or other pack, did I get ripped? I figured it's only $5.

My new favorite animal confirmed.

I admit I just now watched the Honey Badger Don't Give A Shit video and jezuz christ. Normally I don't find that stuff funny but the combination of the voice and the fact that the badger truly doesn't give a shit is epic.

Yup, I highly recommend going after Trap Guy as soon as possible because of the grappling claw, it's a pretty crucial item to move around in the game world.

Yep and as Karak has mentioned before, the verticality is another plus in this game. I am like, " Damn, I can keep going higher?"

To those having issues with the melee combat, I find myself exclusively using the bow and arrow.

Outside of that I lure the person with a rock and perform a takedown.

I only ever use the club to throw (in desperation) or to fend of packs of animals.

Just bought this. Loved FC 3 and 4 (used nothing but the bow in those) so I am on board with this one. Now I have to wait till Tuesday to play :(

Same. Especially now that I have unlocked the Longbow I just switch back and forth between bows. Every bonfire and base I've taken over using stealth, never the all-out assault. Stealth is super satisfying to me.

Only time I used a club or spear was during one of the first missions where you get raided by Udam.

I think Alex Hutchinson is now one of my favorite game designers, whatever project he's in, I'm in as well.

What other games has he been involved in?

I'm having a hard time not being noticed when I'm crouched and attempting to sneak up on (mainly) animals, and sometimes humans as well. I noticed just this morning that pressing left on the control pad brings up a menu where I can cover my scent if I have the right ingredients, I take it this will help? Also, im seeing that the animal companion I have affects my stealth ability as well...anything else?

I'm curious... does anyone know what the difference is between the Blood Shasti Club and the regular one? I don't notice any major change in damage, but it's hard to tell with how loose the melee combat is.

Same applies to the Ubisoft Rewards Kapala Shard versus the standard throwing shard. Anyone know if there's a difference?

Yeah, I consider melee to be that thing you only do when your beast is already taking a munch out of an enemy, or when they're otherwise distracted, stunned, or facing the wrong direction.

Face to face melee battles just feel awkward and wrong so I try to avoid them as much as possible.

BTW - Lighting things on fire is too much fun :)
