Fast company: Will Wii U Join The Gaming Graveyard?

i said months ago on gaf to those moaning about the negative vita posts that nintendo will get it much worse if the wii u isnt selling and in the last week we have seen how true that is.

We had a nintendo direct which announced plenty of games but certain elements in the media turned it into some sort of train wreck from nintendo.

The financials come out and you get articles like this. Nintendo get it way worse than anyone else.

Experts guide to video-game "journalism" :

1)When you are in serious need of hits for your website, write a "Nintendo doomed" piece. Brings 'em in everytime.

2) Research!? We don't need no stinking research!

3) Parrot whatever else the other "news" sites are saying.

4) Congratulations! You are now a games "journalist".

Pretty much.

Nintendo is not going to just forget about it, like Sony has with Vita.

They will try to push it no matter what unless the ground swallows NOJ whole, so it's in no way "doomed."

There is this point. Sony's treatment of the Vita has been pretty bad in a lot of ways.

But rise or fall, Wii U is going to get every big game Nintendo can possibly throw at it.

This isn't the Virtual Boy, which is the true definition of a graveyard flop.

I would love for Nintendo to make a super high powered system in the future just to see what excuses companies like ea could come up with.

"Nintendo Fuck Yeah is a great platform in a great position. Nintendo has some strong IP and I know they're going to do great things in that space. But Fuck Yeah's outer shell is just the wrong color for us, you know? Gen 5 colors haven't started yet. We've got some great initiatives underway in that area."

well, the financials reflect the growing disquiet and reality that is wiiU. You want to talk around it; well - it don't change the fact that the console isn't setting the world on fire.

The latest ND only showcased that there's a substantial game drought on the console; and they're filling the void with... a remake/port.

the wiiU has a precedent; for nintendo. Its the gamecube. If it don't pull in casuals, it will have the gamecube lifecycle. No 3rd party; trickle of nintendo games of varying quality. It had the xmas season and despite that managed to ... flop. Outsold by both xbox360 and ps3.

I don't know if it's just my negativity leak'n all over, but really I see the Wiiu being a moderate success. Not Wii or Ps2 numbers, but not failing or Dreamcasting either...I think they'll have a hard time getting their casuals (which now is their staple crowd) to ante up and buy in (because of price), without a slew of multiplats I don't think the average joe gamer will take the Wiiu seriously when the other boxes will offer more...so it's basically up to the good ol' Nintendo faithfuls and multi console owners to create momentum untill there's an attractive bundle/price involved. In short a don't think Nintendo's digging a grave for the Wiiu, rather its just a matter of time for the must have games and a price to tempt casuals, multi console owners and remaining N-fans.

That said, I'm still pretty excited for E3, It'll be a solid show and who knows, maybe there's a few more surprises in store. :)

This quote that stuck out means I don't have to bother expending energy reading the article in full.

It may have been out-maneuvered at the high-end of gaming by much more powerful machines like Sony's PS3

You would think the gaming media would have learned from the DS, Wii, 3DS.

Let the console hit the year mark before we run doom and gloom articles.

Woah, woah, woah there. I know there's some horrors in that gallery but lumping the Master System, Saturn, Dreamcast and GameCube with them? Come on the GameCube sold close to the same amount as the Xbox. The Saturn and DreamCast were the go-to consoles for fighters and the Master System was like for like in Europe with the NES. What's wrong with new media these days? Can't people just comment on the area they're qualified in and leave the rest alone?

These numbers are mostly from the article + Wikipedia + Nintendo/Sony financials.

Amstrad GX4000: 15,000 (9 months) [I added this one in because they forgot it.]
Nintendo Virtual Boy: 770,000 (9 months) [This one too]
Apple Pippin: 42,000 (2 years)
Sega(?) Neo Geo CD: >25,000 (3 years)
Sega Master System: 10-13 million (11 years)
Sega Saturn: 9.4 million (4 years)
Atari Jaguar: >250,000 (3 years)
Coleco Telstar 1 million (3 years)
Atari Video Pinball: Unknown (2 years)
Magnavox Odessey: 330,000 (3 years) [Really they knocked on the first games console?]
Nintendo GameCube: 21.74 million (6 years)
Sega Dreamcast: 10.6 million (2 years (NA) 9 years (JP))
Vectrex: Unknown (2 years) [I love the Vectrex so this is awful that they mentioned it]
PC Engine (TurboGrafix 16): 10 million (7 years)
Atari 400/800: 4 million (6 years) [These are home PCs why are they even mentioned?]
PlayStation Vita: 2.2 million (6 months) [Added this in because it's seen as DOA nowadays]
Nintendo Wii U: 3.1 million (2 months) [Point of the article]

By no means are the consoles in bold in the same league as the rest of these consoles. In fact the Wii U and Vita has outsold over half of the above in under half a year. The article has some absolutly rediculous comparisons going on here.

I'm all for talking about this matter seriously but shit posts like these need to fuck off. Why would you ignore the other parts of that ND to prove your point ? That's right, because your argument is just a troll.

I might agree with you if Iwata forecasted dates to any of the stuff they'd shown.

Jesus, how many threads about the supposed fall of the Wii U are on the front page alone? People seem to be gleefully posting about it's apparent demise having come short of Nintendo's predictions, Pachter's happy irrelevance and good old doom, doom and doom.

It's only been out for three months, people, with the lack of exclusive software at this early stage it's no wonder sales are slow. Will we still have Nintendo = doomed posts in a year's time? Undoubtedly, but I'll bet the sales numbers will be looking a little healthier then.

Give it a rest, fer Chrissakes.

- The system is only 3 months old.

- Nintendo has already announced games that are coming out this year and a dedicated 3rd party ND.

- Cut forecasts does not equal doomed companies.

Once again, nothing to see here. Move along.

What the fuck did that great Nintendo Direct do to people?

Great? Are you serious? It was full of snake oil.

We know Mario Kart is coming. We know Zelda is. We know 3d Mario is therefore no news there.

Two of those are playable at E3 which is nice. When are their release dates or even release windows? O that's right they didn't say. Therefore, can't rely on it. Could be next year or later.

Zelda will be years off, so we get an HD remake of WW. Nice again but again no release date or ANYTHING.

X was interesting. When's it coming out? Oh again no info.

So a bunch of games we knew were coming, but have no idea when. A few new bits and pieces but still no info on release or how far along they are. And basically very little from now until E3.

I really hope the third party ND gives us something but I again imagine it will be casual or a few Japanese titles with little western stuff.

Man, it begins again? What the fuck is with sites and journalists expecting new hardware to literally wipe the floor in terms of sales and success as its previous lineup every single time? This doesn't happen every time..

Even if the Wii U lasted until 2014, the lineup it has coming seems worthwhile for me to purchase it. But I guess I look past the doom and gloom scenarios here. A failed system to me is a platform that doesn't have games I care about, so I'm happy to enjoy "failures" like the Dreamcast, Saturn, Master System, and GameCube. I guess I care about games before sales being broken. Fuck, even the Virtual Boy had games worth playing on it. :<

Unfortunately that's not how the gaming journalism nor GAF works.

I didn't expect much from the first, but one has to be disappointed about GAF. I actually thought this was a place with highly knowledgable resonable people about all things gaming, that don't jump to conclusions easily and actually base their console opinions on the last 25 years of console gaming and the lessons/information we have learned.

But no: Either it seems the population of this forum consists mostly of PC, PS3/Xbox fanboys, so that a healthy degree of objetivism is hardly possible, or people have become so obsessed with "gaming news" on a daily basis that they kind of lost their ablity to think mid - to long term.

I hope that will change, though, once more games come out, so that people can talk about what actually should matter to any true gamer: games.

All this doom and gloom and hardware-focused discussion on this site has become so annoying, it's hardly bearable.

Their has-been's gallery is full of awesome consoles - Gamecube, Dreamcast, Saturn, Master System, Turbografx.

This is a business focused publication. I loved the Dreamcast, but come on. DC along with the Saturn lead to the demise of Sega (in hardware at least).

Did people actually read the article (it's quite short) or just instantly go into defense mode? The title even says "Will Wii U". It's a projection, not a death certificate. And so no, it's not too early. Sales wise Wii U got off to a solid start, but if Nintendo isn't looking forward a year+ from now themselves and aren't worried about what lies ahead, then what this article suggests may come to pass.
