The first 2015 issue of Bungeishunjū's Weekly Bunshun magazine on Thursday featured an article on the return of singer Hikaru Utada. It quoted a record company source as saying that confidential talks are underway regarding her return to the music industry. The source added that it has been decided that she will sing the theme song for the final new Evangelion film "slated to open between fall and winter of next year." The source explained that Utada has one more album left on her contract with Universal Music Japan, so the company wants the Evangelion song to be the focus of the final album.

However, the source said the theme song tie-in is entirely dependent on director Hideaki Anno opening the film next year as planned. The source explained that Utada can make a song without seeing the story or visuals, but she will not proceed with the project if the opening date is still to be determined.

Other sources have listed Studio Khara's fourth and final new Evangelion film in 2015. In June 2013, Enterbrain's OtonaFami magazine reported a 2015 opening date for the film. The website Web The Television wrote this past July that the film "is slated to open at the end of next year" — only to update the article less than an hour later to instead say the film "has created a stir online and is reportedly opening at the end of next year. […] (There is no official announcement of the opening date.)"

In their December 19 articles about Studio Khara's Japan Animator Expo short with new Evangelion anime footage, ITmedia's Netlab website and Weekly ASCII magazine's Shū-Asu Plus website both describe the film as "slated to open in 2015."

Earlier this month, the official website for Neon Genesis Evangelion streamed Studio Khara's new music video for Hikaru Utada's song "Beautiful World," which was the ending theme for 2007's Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone. The video, directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, features some new footage interspersed with footage from the new Evangelion films. The video promotes Utada's 15th anniversary cover album, which features a variety of artists covering her songs.

An acoustic version of the same song became the ending theme for 2009's Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance. Utada has been on hiatus from the entertainment business since the beginning of 2011, although she returned to host a monthly radio program called Kuma Power Hour with Utada Hikaru on the InterFM station starting in April 2013. She did contribute the song "Sakura Nagashi" as the ending theme for 2012's Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (Evangelion Shin Gekijō-ban: Q), but her management emphasized that the song did not represent a full-fledged return from her hiatus.

2015 could end up being a big year for Eva, with it being the 20th anniversary (and it's also the year the show takes place in!). The release of Eva 3.33 in the west (finally?) and both the Blu-ray set for the series and the rebuild series coming to an end next year I'm obviously very excited, but one has to wonder if the film will be ready by fall next year. I look forward to it in any case.

Wait, there's a blu-ray set for Neon Genesis coming out? Surely that's going to need some serious remaster work. The source elements frequently looked bad even in SD, so HD will just further exacerbate the problem.

Ha yeah I ended up pre-ordering the Japanese set when it came out but I've had the UK blu-ray and DVD set pre-ordered for ages now. For all the films so far I've brought both the Japanese and UK Limited edition Blu-ray and DVD's so I might as well complete the set now lol!

Yup, next year (Link). It includes the original movies too. The Platinum Collection actually looks fantastic for a DVD set even today so I have no doubt it'll look amazing when it comes out, especially End of Eva (drools)

The Evangelion 3.33 Blu-ray is already released in the west.

Sorry you're right. I should have specified, I meant in English speaking countries, it's out in Japan, HK and most of Europe (Germany, France, Spain etc) but not the UK and US etc since the English Dub is still missing in action :)

Don't want to turn this thread into a debate about which Eva film is the best, but I liked 3.33 the most, 2.22 was good fun but just same old same old with the end being the highlight. 1.11 was just Eva Redux definitive edition, (not) a bad thing but literally just the first 6 episodes or so with minor tweaks (more under the surface obviously).

Really excited for the last film solely due to how 2.22 ended in a way that was easy to follow up and yet changed so much at the first second of 3.33. it's just not predictable.

2.22 was same old same old? I think you're confusing it with 1.0

I think this would be totally ok if 3.33 turns out to be a dream and we get the movie that was previewed at the end of 2.22 as 4.44.

I haven't seen it in a while granted, so maybe I'm underselling the changes in 2.22. I just felt that it had many new scenarios but outside of the end nothing that felt substantial or daring. But again, I loved them all so I have no issues with it, but that goes for 3.33 too :D

I'll believe it when I see it, though I've expected it to come out in 2015 for several years (though admittedly, jokingly at first).

I haven't seen 3.0 in a while. What was wrong with it? All I remember is that everyone was pissed at Shinji because he did what they told him to do.

I'd be hyped for this if 3.0 didn't exist.

I can't understand why that movie is the way it is. 1.0 and 2.0 were pretty good.

It was great. Wonderful soundtrack, some great scenes, dick melting compositions, a lot of single frame goodness, everyone hates it, it was just great.

I'm more excited about Hikaru Utada coming back into music on a more full-time basis than I am another Evangelion film to be honest.

And that a lot of the trouble could have been avoided if just Misato had sat down with Shinji and told him what the hell is going on. Instead she puts an explosive collar around his neck and drowns him in passive aggressive silence.

Nope.
I Shinji had known what he had caused, he would've welcomed his father's calling even more strongly, or at least stolen 01. He couldn't have known the real state of things because he would've done something about it, and they couldn't risk him being inside a robot.

"doing something" and "getting in the robot"

Are we talking about Shinji Ikari?

You forget that 3.0 happened BECAUSE Shinji did both of those things. The ending of 2.0 essentially happened because Shinji did all of those things -- he stepped up, he fucked that angel up while in full control. The difference is that in the show, he passed out and Unit 01 protected him. In 2.0, he was in full control, and his doing shot for his own sake, because he wanted to -- that's what triggered third impact.

Basically, being in full control of a 400% synchronization fucked the world up, as opposed to being passed out and letting mommy do the work.

I know I'm just joking

It was sort of way to show off parallels between the original, but it kinda came off wrong.

It was funny to see Shinji want to get in the Eva, and everyone telling him no.
The reason I love Rebuild is that while it stands pretty well as its own stand alone remake, it works even better as a trolling parallel sequel/remake.

I forgot about that. Jesus, it's just annoying me hearing about it.

But I still don't really get why she was so mad at him. At the end of 2.0
she encouraged him to go forward and to do it for himself etc. etc. then in 3.0 she does her best Gendo impression. That Shinji apparently didn't care all that much that the Rei he tried to save was nowhere to be found was also weird to me. She's the one he almost caused the third impact for. Though it's also been a while since I saw it, so maybe I'm remembering it wrong.
