can i ask why ppl are buying the game because there are mods for the game? Yes it is great that the mod community is trying to save the game, but it means jack shit to sqenix since they are STILL getting your money if you pay for it. It won't even give them a reason to ever do a good port of any game since they know the community will fix it and they still get the sales...

The funny thing is that apparently the remade sprites are made by the original sprite artist.

They actually aren't too bad, they just incorrectly scaled them for whatever reason.

Because it's still Final Fantasy 6.

It's not like they'll get it right the next time, there aren't any more 2d final fantasies to port

I honestly dont mind the change from original to what it is right now but thats probably cause I've played the SNES, PSX and GBA versions multiple times lol

Anyways - wouldnt mind changing/modding it either - since I do plan to play the PC version multiple times in the future ;p.

To encourage more of their classic games being put on PC. And the port itself works well and looks better than the screenshots in motion, or at least it does on mobile.

I don't hate the backgrounds, though they are a bit blurry. But the character sprites are terrible, regardless of stretching or blurry filter. If SE had redone them like they did with FF1(psp), that's would have been great with an instant purchase from me. Mods aren't likely going to fix that unless a modder wants to make whole new sprites.

I'm not a fan of bigger sprites for classic RPGs. Part of the aesthetic was that you needed to imagine the details because everything was smushed into the space of a few pixels. They felt like representative icons, and that abstraction was enough to let players see past the lack of detail. An angry sprite could hop up and down twice, and you'd know they were mad.
By increasing sprite size, you give every character enough space on their face to properly emote, but they never do, and it makes them look like dolls.

Alternate Scenario (if anyone at SqEx actually made some effort):

While I'm sure there was effort put into that image. Those lanky bodies and and balloon heads are not really faithful to the original game designs. Even if they were used for promotional art.

Now this looks like classic Final fantasy with effort behind it. So purrdy!

Same here. I have played so many versions multiple times that all look the same that I won't mind a different take on one of my favorite games of all time. Although some bits might jive me the wrong way I am sure some of the visuals will be nice changes. ie: I am playing FF V on Steam now and the spell and summon effects look so much nicer than any other version I've played.

I just got this today and can't wait to see the differences, both better and worse.

The new sprites were made by one of the FF VI artists, however I dont think it was "the" artist for those sprites. Regardless, its still a poor effort because theyre not made in conjunction with the backgrounds, thats why they look so off because they dont work well together with the rest of the game. Its like everyone on the art team was ofdf doing their own thing and they just slapped everything together in the end, with no regards to art direction or visual integrity.

The mod that removes a lot of the VFX on top of the sprites helps a lot, but you still have background sprite art thats badly made, with really poor tiling in many places. The sprite thickness and detail is also really uneven across the board, making it a poor experience overall (whereas the original was excellent in this regard)

Im still not buying this PC version, I dont want to support such a barebones effort.

The GBA port is also lacking in the visual department. They brightened the hell out of the art so that it would be viable in a regular GBA model, but when you play it on a proper system, its very washed out.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

I've been working on upscaling the original SNES sprites so that they can be modded into the game if people prefer them. Now that the bilinear filter has been patched out, I'm finding myself liking the new sprites more than I thought I would.

Nxyo's on a roll though - he's been able to successfully perform a sprite replacement that's recognized in-game.

Please let us know when there is a mod to turn off XP gain (but keep AP). With all the talk about graphics, my biggest issue with having played the game many times is how easy it is. Rather than a tedious actual low level playthrough, or fan-made artificial hard patches which are full of opinionated arbitrary choices, in my recent playthroughs I much prefer just using gameshark codes to turn off XP and leveling up when I feel I need to. I'm looking for a simple XP on/off toggle for this game. I want to play this version because I can actually use Cyan in my main 12.

I think the new sprites are fine, but they need a correction on color, and a bit more details.

the RPG Maker comment was rude, and I'm sorry for shit-posting.

What I meant to say was that it felt completely anonymous to me. Like, it could have been any rendering behind the characters, anyone could have drawn the goddess, the characters all look like they were put together using the same lego pieces. FFVI and other games of the era really felt like a cohesive, tailored whole.

That picture in the OP is just so... tacky. I don't have the right words in my vocabulary to describe it, I'm not an artist. Like, the tone it invokes for me really is just RPG Maker, and maybe that's just because it's the only touchstone I have that invokes the feeling it gives me. *shrug*

Except the depictions of characters in that piece of art is very close to how the characters were portrayed on FF6 box art. That's what makes it neat. Either you care about OG character design or you don't. I still don't know why you keep pushing for RPG maker analogies. It's like you heard it being used as an insult in the past and you're trying to seize any opportunity to use it yourself. You are more than welcome to find any RPG maker game that reminds you of that art. I'll wait

I'm not trying to insult you or be hurtful, but if I have I unconditionally apologise. I'm talking about things I know next to nothing about, and I'm going to just stop digging here.

(edit: for example, I didn't realise bringing up RPG Maker was a common insult? I used it derogatorily in my first (shitty) post, but I'm not riding some band-wagon here, it's just something I spent a lot of time with as a kid.)

There's been plenty of screenshots shown in the thread that would actually be relevant to the post.

Showing some cool idea that isn't relevant to the mod is just damaging to potential readers.

I get a crashing using the bilinear removal tool. Might just have to hold out for the new sprites if this happens 100% through. Maybe FFV might get the same treatment.

Yeah, I like that as a significant change. Takes me right back to the strategy guide and I'm enjoying imagining it in motion, with some touch ups. It wouldn't have repulsed me like the iOS version does. Ideally, PSP-make is what I want, though.

Very much this. FFVI remains my favorite FF game, and the second they make it resemble the old game is the second I buy it for that reason.

This. The end goal is to have all Final Fantasy games on a single platform... and of all single platforms, I'd much rather them all be PC.

You're right I should have just mentioned it in a follow up comment in this thread but too late. That's why I edited my main post

Very likely they use the exact same engine, if not a very similar one at least.

I love the PSP FFs so much, why couldn't they stay on that path? I'm really pissed I can't buy FF1/2 PSP from the PSN store. It's there in EU/JP but not NA...

Man I miss playing the PSP versions - should play them again lol.

Would love to see FFIV Complete collection again in the future on another platform but I doubt we'll see it ;(

If someone out there somehow mods the Steam FF6 to have sprites as good as the PSP FFIV, I'd probably buy it in a heartbeat (and give a generous donation). Damn those look nice.

The work involved would be insane though, I don't expect it anytime soon. I don't like that "HD" example from earlier, it looks clean but something about the artstyle is really... ugh. It bothers me.

Never liked the character sprites in the FFIV PSP remake either. They look stiff, sometimes hard to read, lack character. I think it's becausr their character template is easy to see in them. The FFI remake had designs better tailored to sprite art, with more volume to them, making it easier to mask the template.

But this thread isn't those games. Getting rid of the blur makes a big difference already, but it highlights how these assets do not play together well. Using radically different shading styles and palettes gives it an unpleasant look, which might be why they smeared it all in vaseline. Good to see people trying to do the game justice if Square Enix isn't going to.

Then if we dont buy it Square will think that fans on Steam dont want classic style jrpgs and then get less ports.

We cant win : (

Why couldn't Square have done the graphics and everything like they did with the Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection remake for the PSP. That was an amazing port. That would have been perfect to use for V and VI.

Modding is coming along pretty well so far. Nyxo released his FFVI_Explore tool that lets modders extract sprite data from the encrypted obb file the game uses, and the latest version allows modders to create "patches" that can be applied individually so that you don't have to redistribute the 700MB file each time you release a mod, and it means you can apply multiple mods without having to extract/apply them yourself.

Steam user pluckylump is working on a respriting effort that does the characters justice. Some of his WIP stuff looks really promising, but he's got a long ways to go.

Steam user Monterossa is working on a mod that will remove the NA censoring from the game and take it back to it's original Japanese SNES roots. Screenshot here of his resprited Siron esper.

Finally, Steam user jObEfiSH is working on a sprite mod that just changes a few character sprites to more closely match their character portraits. A WIP shot is here of Locke.

Nothing too exciting just yet, but that's what we've got so far.

I've been playing a mobile game called Final Fantasy: Brave Exvious that features characters from various FF games and seems to have most of FF VI characters in it.

I think they've done a really good job with the spritework in that game and would probably be a dream come true to be able to somehow get those sprites into FF VI. It seems easy enough for people to extract the sprites from the game, but I can't imagine how complex it must be to implement them in FF VI.

Here is Celes for example:

Here's a video from the game featuring a team of Terra, Edgar, Sabin, Cyan and Shadow:
https://youtu.be/ORoOieQ316w?t=246
