Forza Horizon 3 PC Performance Thread

Do you mind sharing the rest of your settings? I have a comparable CPU and got the same video card. I would love to be able to play this game at 60.

I checked again. All of my settings are set to "on" or whatever the max is, with the exception of MSAA, which is off.

I made a short video to show the settings and how the game is running:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gaeo4muahWE

The game still dips to 50 sometimes in the forest, and I think this is a limitation of the game engine as the GPU only ever got up to 98% or so .With G-sync on the dips are pretty much unnoticeable. I may try turning the resolution down a bit to see if I can peg 60 at all times.

Are you also using the low priority + disable core 0 trick (if you have an i7 that is)?

The bits you showed in that video aren't anywhere near as demanding as the game gets. Find a race through a dense rain-forest, with all the cars in front of you and spray/dust being kicked up. The street race 'Rain-forest Escape' is one of the worst.

The game actually runs well at very high resolutions 4K+. The problem is, it doesn't scale as you drop the resolution. So people with the highest end cards can get ~50fps at 4K, while those with slightly lesser cards get a similar framerate at 1080p.

I tried the MSAA thing, no luck. 4k with no MSAA performs about on par with 1440p MSAA 4x with everything else on high/ultra in both cases.

Core 0 + Low priority takes care of most of the stutter, beginning of Rainforest Escape is locked at 60 *most of the time* (for some reason it's locked on some runs and if I just restart the same race there are drops to 57) and tram street in Surfer's is 55-60. Again, some runs have drops, some don't, number of onscreen cars doesn't seem to make a difference. And all this with CPU and GPU usage never going above 65%.

I'll mess around with the CPU tweak and try the "Rain-forest Escape" race tonight.

Just started playing this and it seems to run fine 1080p60 on my 1080/i5. Have noticed one or two hiccups though. What should I turn off (ultra)

Also why does the fps counter only go upto 50?

Seems that FH3 doesn't see DSR resolutions anymore in CU/1703 so there's no way to supersample. One would think that instead of taking features out they'd be adding more of them but this is MS.

Lots of things are currently broke in CU, Mass Effect's HDR mode is broken right now until Nvidia can get new drivers out to fix it.

How is this game running? Just finished my build last week and I tried the demo for this last night. Loved it and it ran really well for me. Does the game run as well as the demo all around or are there trouble spots?

The game have started crashing on the loading screen for me.

The only way to solve it is to reset the game and start anew with the "optimizing" screen.

Anybody know of a solution?

they supposedly fixed the input lag at 30 fps. trying to hit 60 fps is still a stuttery mess. the demo area is the best performance case but it still stutters there as well

I've been complaining about this game's performance for ages, but somehow it decided to run at a flawless 60 fps on my PC now.

Yeah certain areas will but you still have the stutter. Even when youre getting 90 fps in a barren area on a gsync 144hz monitor it subjectively feels like a juddery 45 to 50 on a fixed refresh rate 60hz monitor

Dang, this game seems to be really poorly optimised. Was about to pull the trigger, but after seeing it mentioned inn a stream and then looking at this thread, I am seriously reconsidering. I have an i7 7700 and a 4gb 980 as well as 8gb of ram, how do people with similar builds find its performance? I have $45 of Microsoft credit expiring next month so was looking for an excuse to spend it really.

I had serious issues until I upgraded to 16gb of RAM. I still have issues, they're just not as major. Honestly I can't recommend this game even now. i7-6700k, 970, 16gb RAM here.

I'm having flashbacks of people insisting that this wasn't a thing and that we were overblowing the issue. Lol. What a garbage port. It ruined my perception of the Forza series in general (says the guy who bought an XB1 for FH2).

I replaced my 1080 with a 1080ti and ran FH3.
With my 1080 I would get 50fps 99% of the time @4k with everything max except MSAA which was at 4x.
With the 1080ti I get 50fps 80% of the time at max settings and 8x MSAA with the highest resolution which is 4096x2198 I think. Drops mainly in the forest and the usual tramlines part of the city.
Going to 4k I get 50fps 99% of the time. I doubt you could get 60fps with a 1080ti. The cpu is a 4790@4.2ghz, 16GB 2133RAM and an SSD.

Also to mention I no longer get crashes when entering races. This was before I installed my 1080ti. And the terado problem with going online has been fixed, probably by a Windows update. So now I can go online.

What a rubbish port. Shame on Microsoft and Turn10 for leaving it in such a dismal state. This doesn't install confidence for the UWP.

What does a bad port have to do with UWP itself? You're not going to tell me Gears 4 did bring you confidence or that there aren't any bad ports on Win32, so I'm not quite sure why that specific connection is some kind of exception.

Thanks, seems I will skip this game then.

There's a demo of a nice section of the game on the store, if people are wondering about overall performance.

You just have to re-enable DSR in the nVidia control panel.

When you have your DSR factor set in the Nvidia panel, do you normally see that internal resolution in the game menu (ex: showing the 4K dimensions when you're downsampling to 1080p)?

I know, but it's definitely not stuttering for me anymore. I used to have drops of 2-3 fps that felt like I was pressing the pause button, now it's butter all the time. It's pretty great.

The best was when they would upload a video using their cellphone to show the lack of input lag. Every time it had at least 200ms of a delay. Shit was straight comedy. Warriors will be warriors

Yes.

When Microsoft allows everyone to do self-service refunds on the W10 store you could always try it and see how it runs on your system, especially since you have funds expiring soon.

The game itself is great but the PC version is garbage for more people than it ever should have been.

This was my favorite too XD.

Weird, I just finished the update and it disabled DSR on my end. I'm using the second to last driver and the resolutions appear correctly.
You're right, it's there. Interestingly, it wasn't there yesterday. No idea what fixed it - a system restart maybe?

Sure, it's how it works - you select a resolution higher than your monitor native one and the driver / game / OS (depending on a game) downsample from there.

I think FH3 can do downsampling ingame, considering how I can run the game 21:9 in a 16:9 window

It should be playable fine although the 8 GB of RAM may cause some drops going from area to area as RAM needs to be compressed with settings on high.

I'd say the port is quite decent, even supports mouse in menus fine while any quick port would be like lol mapped xbox controller to keyboard. However, it doesn't change the fact the game is threaded just enough to make 30 FPS constant on Xbox One and no changes were made to make 60 FPS more likely. It's a catch 22: keep unlocked fps and the game gets blasted for only keeping such promises on high end 4 cores, while keeping the 30 FPS cap would of had the rightful complaints of input lag (option to remove this "feature" was added way after launch) and complaints of "why no 60 apex did it"

Performance for this game is still terrible for me. Doesn't matter what settings I use. Can't get 60 fps at any resolution

i7 7700k @ 4.6
16 GB 3600 MHz RAM
1080 ti

And what settings specifically?
I seem to be getting decent performance at 1080p60, but I turn some things to medium and low with a GTX 970, 7700k 4.8ghz, 16gb 3000mhz cl14 ram.

Odd - mine runs 60 running at 4k on my 1080ti and I have a 6700k and slower ram.

Yeah, I have a 4690k @4.3, a 1070 and 16gb of DDR3 PC1600. All settings are on high except the car details and reflections, which are on ultra, and it's all butter with locked 60fps.

I've selected all factors in DSR menu but no matter what I do I cannot see it in the game. CU is currently installed on PC

The Creators Update broke some things like that. It's the same for me with a fresh reinstall as of the CU release. I also had been testing the CU in the Windows Insider Preview releases leading up to the public release and it's been like this for a few builds now for me.

Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

Haven't tried the Creators Update yet (I don't think I even have that in Windows Update yet, though I don't make it a habit to check often), but I got a GTX 1080 in today. And finally, FINALLY, the game hits a not-quite-solid-but-I'll-take-it 60fps at 1920x1200 at the High non-dynamic preset. I'm still on an i5 3570k so I'm not expecting much more improvement, but the difference from running at Medium on a GTX 970 is like night and day. No more sudden drops to 25fps, no odd speed-up-slow-down shenanigans, and input lag seems to be fine too.

It sucks that the way to fix Forza Horizon 3 is to drop $600 on a new video card, but I'll take what I can get.

GTX 1060 6gb, 3570k @ 4.2ghz, mix of med high settings @ 4x MSAA

Almost consistent 60fps in all areas outside of Surfers Paradise, there is still microstutter but I'm guessing that will never be remedied?

The game has come a long way performance wise, at least for me. Still below average, but not total shite like at launch.
