I'm not sure if a long nature documentary counts (it was on TV, but I'm not sure if it fits what you have in mind for this topic), so I'll post this as is - if you need me to adjust it or something, PM me.

With that said:

1. The Wire
2. Planet Earth
3. Dexter
4. Avatar: The Last Airbender
5. Rome
6. The West Wing
7. Veronica Mars
8. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
9. Batman: The Animated Series
10. Forensic Files

I decided not to include any anime, seeing as how I don't ever watch it on TV, unless it is on DVD.

Are these in order?

List is updated, and a clear favourite has emerged, although there is a bit of play in the rest of the top five. There is a close competition between Star Trek TNG, DS9 and Firefly.

Will wait for another page or so of votes before posting the top twenty.

Edit (I can read the future):

1. The Shield
2. The Wire
3. House M.D. (still the best single episode of TV ever - Three Stories)

I agree with the sentiment -- it continually baffles me how GAF can completely ignore virtually all film and television from before, say, the mid-'80s when they're receptive to books and music from much earlier -- although it did strike me as a little funny how you say that and then the only pre-'90s show you list is the Twilight Zone. :)
Exactly what do you want people to do? Sit around all day watching Nick at Night? 99% of what's on tv will always be at least semi-current. And quite frankly, I've seen lots of pre-90s tv, and tons of it is shit, and a lot of the good stuff is isn't all that imaginative. Sorry to break it to you but a lot of that is nostalgia. There's lots of crap on tv these days, but also some of the very best tv we've seen across all genres.

Wow, this took longer to compile than I thought. Should be easier now that I have most of the shows in my table. I completely forgot that GAF loves Lost.

It's amazing that a contemporary show with a continuous narrative like Lost is getting so much love - i'd be interested to see just how high Lost ranks on peoples lists a good few years after it eventually ends, somthing tells me it wouldn't be voted as often or as high.

Not enough love for The West Wing.
Great show but i wouldn't put it in my top 10. Mostly because it started to run out of steam its last few seasons. The first 4 were amazing but it started to go downhill after that.

Four amazing seasons aren't enough ? If Donna looked you in the eye, you'd melt, back down, and add it.

Season seven was awesome for covering the presidential campaign between Santos and Vinick, seasons five and six were good too.

Epic tag Dax!

Here's another fun fact from looking through the results: Futurama is the highest ranked show WITHOUT any votes for it as someone's #1 favourite show. Amazing.

Really? season 5 was bad enough that I didn't finish it, but the last two seasons picked it back up again, it was almost as entertaining as Obama's campaign.
