Yeah, conference cancelled by a treat! I huge victory against censorship!

...oh wait.

Man, I am a pretty hardcore critic of Sarkeesian, but this is ludicrous. And the worst part is that it only validates all the dumb stuff Sarkeesian says. I can't take it.

What are you even talking about? It validates that videogames have a problem with women representation? Since you're a "hardcore critic", I guess you at least know what the videos are about... right?

Again I do not believe the place can be considered "private" when it comes to these laws considering how it is funded.

Plus you will step on a whole other hornets nest if you try to ban guns for even 2-3 hours in a place that allows open carry. Not only would you have the #GG crazies but you will have the gun crazies teaming up with them.

True. GG would probably end up getting almost majority support in the US if they brought this up as "anti-GG women want to take away your guns". You do not mess around out here w/ the 2nd amendment. Seeing as many of the pro 2nd amendment folks were also those for regulating violent video games; we would be stepping in DEEP to it.

I've been gaming for a long time and Gamergate is the stupidest fucking thing I have ever witnessed in relation to video games. Not only the "MRA" but the "SJW"as well. Both sides, from Anita stankonia who makes every issue appear from nothing to the ones protesting her shit. Since when did one person's reaction to something especially one as unimportant as hers cause such an outrage. Do people become outraged with female authors from books like Twilight & 50 shades of grey for basically objectifying men? Fuck this, I've never been so disappointed in the gaming community
Wow. Um....

Wow.

You're allowed to carry concealed weapons on that campus?! My campus doesn't allow that even with a permit.

Varies greatly state to state. Most do not allow firearms in churches, schools, government buildings, places that serve alcohol and places of known danger. So I am a little surprised too that their campus allows it. But again it varies.

Oh the good ol tolerance paradox again. I'm sure your phil101 professor is going to love your papers.

Go back a decade and ask them what they thought ;)

See now there is an anti-GG: #StopGamerGate2014

It may be folly, but there is a banner now for those that really dislike GamerGate.

There have been reddits for talk about anti GG stuff for quite a while. One is called Gamerghazi or something like that.

Edit: Nvm, not sure how I got reddit from what you said.

Okay, I'll bite.

Why is her cause unimportant?

I can't see how this could be impinging on the First Amendment.

I imagine it goes along a line of reasoning such as this:

First Amendment guarantees no impingement on free speech.

Second Amendment guarantees a right to carry weapons.

When the guarantee of weapons creates a culture of fear such that those with "Controversial" but otherwise non-harmful opinions are afraid to speak out given the high probability someone who hates them will also be armed with deadly weapons.

It's obviously not cut and dry but I think it would definitely be an interesting discussion.

Personally, fuck the Second Amendment. Extremely strict Gun Legislation was one of the best things to happen to my country.

...no, it validates the fact that GG is not, nor has ever been, about ethics in gaming and is just a unified harassment campaign.

Video games represent exactly what they need to.

This is an interesting line of reasoning, but the 1st Amendment doesn't protect against this kind of stuff.

I know that LW is the codename for the women that Gamergate targets (seriously, how can you not realize that you're a lunatic at that point) but what do the letters actually stand for?

It's not for all women. It stands for "Literally Who?" and it comes from the standard reaction 4chan posters had every time someone tried to shift the discussion on /v/ towards Zoe Quinn instead of emailing advertisers and generating propaganda.

First Amendment guarantees no impingement on free speech.

I'm not American, so I'm not as well versed in its constitution. But I though the first amendment was protection of free speech from the state? A private citizen treating to kill you if you speak isn't a first amendment issue, it's just a criminal issue.

I live a couple miles from USU (I attended myself) and yeah, the venue doesn't have any metal detectors and it's a very open campus, not that it would matter because of the concealed weapons permits. The threat spooked me enough to make a few phone calls to students or parents with students I know that attend.

Right. And "no impingement on free speech" is far, far too broad of a statement when it comes to the 1st Amendment.

Edit: I guess, source - I'm awaiting bar exam results. SO DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT JUST YET LOL!!!

How the hell are both sides are stupid as each other.

On the one side, you've got an anonymous lunatic threatening to shoot up a bunch of innocent people; an act of terrorism.

On the other side you've got someone trying to give a talk.

And what issue did she make appear from nothing? She was threatened with being shot, and then informed she would be in a room full of people that were able to conceal weapons.

I can't understand how false equivalency people make these posts, look at them, and think to themselves, "yep, these two things are in equal disrepute".

Edit: Nevermind, you were banned.

That does not answer my question at all. You said recent events surrounding gamergate validated "the dumb things she says". What does it validate and how?

I hope there weren't any constitutional law questions on the bar exam!

I really feel like the prevalence of "both sides" journalism since God knows how long has led to the kind of ridiculous false equivalencies we've seen recently. It's absolutely pernicious.

Hey buddy its not Utah's* fault. Its the psychopath who is willing to harm innocents fault.

*I'm not from Utah
Of course it's the psycho's fault, but the state definitely has a responsibility in protecting citizens and making them feel safe to speak freely. In this case, it failed spectacularly.

No, more looking at it from the point of the lawmakers and how much weight should be given to competing interests. Not that any prohibitions are triggered, more that creating laws to strengthen the rights of the Second Amendment in this case have the unintended effect of weakening the rights of the First Amendment.

Correct, but in the line of reasoning I'm imagining, the Second amendment allowing the possibility of armed detractors at public speaking events might be seen as implicit infringement on free speech rights.

Edit: For the record, I'm not american either, and only vaguely familiar with the legal duties the constitution demands. For example. Is the state required to create legislation that protects free speech, or merely forbidden from making legislation that limits it. In my examples, I suppose the former would be taken...

I don't have anything constructive to comment but I need to vent. Ugh. I'm so... nauseated, I don't know. Just look at all of this and how it's so fucking stupid. I should get off the internet for a while
(I know I won't)

There are two villains in this saga:

1] The psychopath sending threat to kill people if the talk in a public forum
2] Utah's gun laws that enable this

Twilight and 50 Shades are very much heavily criticized. So weird to see those brought up all the time. Their fan bases just don't riot in the streets.

And man, if our industry is so comparable to a thinly veiled (and badly written) abstinence allegory and it's fanfiction BDSM porn spinoff, I mean, that's pretty sad.

Saying it's about ethical journalism is silly. Saying it's a unified harassment campaign is silly.

Becomes less silly as the days go on.

As women are driven from their homes.

As universities close events due to threats of gun violence.

As gaming conventions receive bomb threats because they're letting women talk.

Less silly as the days go on.

It means that the industry has built in mechanisms to accurately reflect the needs and wants of the consumer.

Does it now?

Like what? Go on. Get specific.

Scares like this are messed up. USU will probably have this on their mind for the rest of the year.

If state law can't keep firearms not carried by security/law enforcement off a university?

That's some fucked up state law.

Ah... I think you do not understand Utah...
They love their guns, like really love their guns. They made sure to put it in their constitution about the right to have them.

But that is a totally different argument.
