[Gamers Nexus] Weak Design: PlayStation 5 Thermals, Power, & Noise Testing

I think you dont know

We can debate the scale between a wisper and a quiet library all day, but I breathe louder than that.
If you go by that logic, I am pretty sure you are going to agree that you can tell the difference between a normal conversation and a goddamn loud vacuum or traffic, lol. That also is just 10dB between those.
I didn't say the increase will be damn loud btw, but we will clearly be able to tell the difference.
(Also breathing is only 10dB :messenger_squinting_tongue:)

So the memory is running hot, but still can be in the specs from Sony..

Do we know if the PS5 consoles with some graphical issues / artefacts were real or some FUD? If real, then the high heat could be the reason.

With both consoles you hear noise when you go rest close to them. Even the XSX is very quiet in abnormal scenario, but it is to be expected that getting close to it the huge fan moving lot of air means there is noise (just the volume of air being moved on its own will make noise period) and some people will put their ear constantly next to it and complain but they are more annoying than the noise itself :D.

There are definitely a small amount of consoles artifacting but this happens in every generation and was there from the moment they started to play games so I would say it is just a faulty GPU to begin with.

I know that always only a small amount is affected :D of course unfortunately we had some bad examples, that a bigger amount can be effected (RROD and Ylod).

But can we say it is a faulty GPU if it is an APU? We do not have just a GPU anymore, so if there should be anything wrong, wouldn't the issue be much much bigger?

As someone mentioned in another thread, these kind of artifacts looked like on Pc, if you OC your RAM to high.

But it is good to know, if we should get any small issue with heat that we can just enter team Naked.. 😅

Oh yeah for sure there a wide array of factors that could make these problems occur, I just believe Sony would have mass tested this and something as important as the temperature of the memory in a console they are making it their goal to make cool that this would have been tested thoroughly, probably an isolated issue I hope!

well its not quiet, i can definitetly hear it when there isnt much sound where as Series X is totally silent

but coming from Jet Engine 4 Pro this is still heaven

Not my breathing

Wait until they start saying it, then call them out if it happens. Dont bait others and encourage and engage console wars.
Love how this is picked up out of piles of bait posts in many threads here. I wonder why. lol

Also this wasn't a bait post. It genuinely happened every time someone with a differing opinion is mentioned here.Thankfully my post stopped it from happening. I should be thanked.

Great video! Steve is representative of the best the PC community has to offer. Gamers Nexus is incredible anybody curious just have a peek at the depth of videos on their channel. Their partner channels like Bearded Hardware and Buildzoid make the GN+ community amazing.

"I don't know why the console community is so willing to just accept what is given to them, and assume that there's no room to improve."

That's simple, Steve, and we all know the answer.

Just checking if everyone's PS5 has been fried yet?
Oh... Apparently Sony's engineers knows better than an egotistic nerd who thinks he is an authority on everything because he had 2m subscribers lol.

Hardware hysteria around PS5 was comical, especially in hindsight. Turned out launch PS5 thermal design was excessive.

I'm actually surprised how long my launch PS5 has lasted so far. I had about 350 hours of play time last year alone and the fans sound the same as they did on day one. It hasn't gotten any warmer since then.

Accordingly, I can only agree that the video from Gamers Nexus is absolute nonsense.

Played around 600 hrs yearly since launch, my base ps5 is still rocking( have only cleaned twice or thrice) and doesn't get hot nor loud. Also, have kept it vertical, if that matters.

Dude. Don't try to hate someone If retards like this one here are running arround.

Negativity always brings clicks.
These so called experts of youtube fall under the "if you can't do it teach it" category for me.
Just like DF, they did some internet research and then pretend to be experts yet i doubt they would understand a technical paper related to the topics they discuss.

Besides the disk drive , my ps5 still works perfectly , no noise whatsoever

Here's hoping my ps5 pro will last even longer

This thread is over four years old.
Not only that but Steve never claimed the lifespan of the console will definitely be a problem, just reported that the one memory temperature was high and it may have some impact in the future, but that Sony likely tested it and it very likely won't be a issue. He specifically called out a Reddit post in the follow up video for claiming it would reduce the lifespan of the console.

He shits on PC builds and components all the time, especially if temperatures are high, or if the noise is even slightly elevated. God forbid he puts the same rigorous testing methodology against the PS5.

His testing methodology was flawed. AFAIK nobody reproduced his results.

My launch ps5 is still going strong. The only launch ps system that ever gave up on me was a ps3 but that happened 6 years after the launch.

Where are the other results that directly tested memory temperature? Not just with a thermal camera, but with direct connections to the memory modules.
I don't remember but I think someone else did similar tests. But I have read analysis about how flawed his test was. In summary to test the temperature he had to remove the pad and couldn't be certain the pad was properly re-applied aftter adding the temperature sensor.

All the fear monger was nonsense. Ps5 is a good system. My launch unit never had any issues before switching to pro.
But the grifters gotta grift

350 hours in a year 😂
I do that in a mouth.

I think I watched the video back when it came out and I can't be bothered watching it again. The headline of "weak design" seems exaggerated. I'm sure the vast majority of launch consoles are going strong and will continue like that well into the PS6 generation. Can we really call something weak design if it has a long life without causing major irritations (like being too loud) and performs its function consistently well throughout that entire lifespan?
