Games that are impossible to find or absurdly rare?

King of Fighters 2000 for the Neo Geo.

Only 100 copies were ever released.

There are also 10 copies of Tetris for the Mega Drive floating around in the world.

Really??

I'm sure I saw tons of these in specialist U.K. Import stores when this came out.

I actually bought very good condition used copy last Sunday for £60. I was very lucky as it was in a shop window I was passing near where I live (London). It was literally the first time I've ever seen a copy of the game in the flesh. It wasn't cheap, but its very rare and I've always regretted never buying a copy at launch.

Weird, have there been any other situations like this?

Not sure, but I guess there must be many prize editions of games that have just faded into obscurity and have never been sold.

Also found this about the 24 carat gold SP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gl7liLvrBac

EDIT: Actually, I remember an AVGN episode from several years ago about Swordquest and the competitions that were held. Those prizes from the competitions are so elusive we aren't even sure they exist.

Really? The GamExchange (second hand though) here near me has like six copies complete for €40.

This is the famously cancelled NBA Elite 11. It was such a piece of shit that it was literally cancelled right before it was released. Somehow a few copies on the Playstation 3 got out. Copies have sold on eBay for over a thousand dollars.

Not KOF 2000 AES releases in general, just the U.S. version, IIRC, and it's been so long that I can't remember if this was an actual official SNK release or some of the infamous NeoGeo Freak bullshit.

Nintendo's bit Generations series for the GBA are fairly rare. According to ********, Boundish (which I have) only sold about 3900 copies. My guess is some of the later ones like Soundvoyager are probably more rare (there's no data on those I could find).

Speaking of, I miss that avant garde, artsy Nintendo that was releasing games like these and Electroplankton.

Rarest game I own is Magic Knight Rayearth (Saturn) From what I understand the last Saturn game to be released in North America. And a pretty good game too.

Yep, it definitely is. It wasn't worth much for a while, but it's finally starting to earn its reputation.

I remember seeing the recalled/delayed version of scribblesnauts(cant recall which "expansion" definitly the delayed one though) in a store, way before its eu release (it were delayed due to UK wanted their english in), didnt buy it but I'm sure the pal version of US english in that game is potencially very rare!

In the same vein (but not as rare) is NCAA Basketball 2K3 for the GameCube. It was the only game in the series to appear on the GameCube and was canceled halfway through it's printing run.

I'm gonna change the criteria a bit because I think it's cheating if you consider:

  • Unreleased games
  • Games that were recalled (ie: Stadium Events) for any reason
  • Collectors or Limited Edition. I mean, if we're gonan do this one, Saints Row 3 had a special $100,000 dollar "edition" that came with a sports car. Functionally, the game itself is the same as any regular copy you can get off Amazon. Though
  • Promotional games that were never released to the public (NES Gold Cart)

In that respect, I would imagine that one of the rarest games ever made would be to be a working copy of Akalabeth by Richard Garriot (Ultima fame). The original game was released in a ziplock bag. Due to the historical relevance of it and the rate at which floppy disks degrade over time, a working copy of such a game would likely be the rarest game in existence. It's coming up on it's 40th anniversary soon (2019). It would be unbelievable if found a copy of such a game in it's original packaging and still working. You're talking about a 40 year old 5.25 inch floppy disk here.

A legit Akalabeth was offered for sale in 2013.

The manual, bag and other materials are repos, but the disk was verified. It was even apparently bootable.

That Mean Girls DS game that no one can find a copy of.

505games customer support say that the game was never released, not just in NA, but anywhere worldwide.
Seems to be a cancelled game that never officially got cancelled in Europe.

There's apparently been one sold online before though, review copy?

I got mine. Though it is now easier to find. Still sets you back $2500 to import after costs. Not a ton of them around.

I have one of those numbered Diamond Trust games mentioned in this thread. I don't think it is that rare to be honest.

Dee Dee Planet for the Dreamcast was cancelled at the very last minute due to a huge networking bug. The game was completed and copies were printed. The rumor is that Sega actually shipped the game out to retailers, but ended up recalling all the shipped copies.

No traces of anyone nabbing a copy before they were recalled. No leaks, nothing. Maybe one day we'll get to play this, it looks cool as hell.

Sega of America has a copy of this game sitting in their archives.

Yes and no? It was fairly common to sell games in zip lock bags back then - that in and of itself doesn't make it rare, especially for such a (now) famous game. That said, I'm sure it's still valuable - I recently sold a lot of my 5.25 floppy disc games for a small fortune (my complete Ultima IV sold for nearly $500, so I'm sure Akalabeth would sell for quite a bit more) - it's not like Ultima IV was rare at the time.

My collection was piecemeal in general [my father had thrown away some boxes, some disks, etc] but it was interesting to see what people wanted. Even inserts for some ziplock games sold for $20 or more, for games I didn't think anyone would even have heard of.

I don't know if any of the 5.25s that I sold 'worked'... I didn't have the machines to test them, and nobody I sold to seemed to care. I think people want to own the physical for collection purposes, and would prefer to play emu anyway for obvious reasons.

Packaging variants introduce another (perhaps artificial) level of rarity, but in the Dreamcast arena that has to go to the Speed Devils variant:

Just found that in an eBay lot a few months ago. Got it for basically nothing.

Propeller Arena was set for release on Sept. 19, 2001 before it was cancelled due to Sept. 11 sensitivity about games where you can crash planes into skyscrapers. Eight days. They had to have had complete packaged copies made, right? I wonder if they were all destroyed.

Today at the flea market I saw two NES rarities sitting on a table, Little Sampson and Flintstones: Surprise at Dinosaur Peak. Yeah, they were repos, but my eyes got big for a second. I saw a real Little Sampson once in the wild more than 10 years ago but passed up the opportunity to buy it. I bought Metroid instead. I've never seen the Flintstones game.

The Sega 32X CD version of Surgical Strike was only released in Brazil, since Sega cancelled the game before release here in the US but TecToy did publish it there. Only a few hundred copies were made, 300 at most, and only one or two are still known to exist. I've never heard or seen one go up for sale anywhere, and there are no videos of the game on the internet I know of either, but it does exist and was released... barely. It has got to be one of the rarest console games that actually did get a retail release somewhere.

(The regular US Sega CD version of Surgical Strike is not hard to find, but that's different, the 32X CD version has much better visuals. The US SCD version advertises the 32X CD version on the back cover of the manual, but it was never actually sold here...)

Isnt the international version of Yoshi's Story one of the rarest N64 games? That was basically a demo cart only meant to be shown off in stores.

The lowest price I've seen it at was around $400

Ive tried finding copies of the Jurassic Park park builder game and its impossible to find!

Depends what system. The PS2 isn't too hard, the Xbox can be difficult, but the PC hard copy is next to impossible. Luckily I found the Xbox version at a Pawn Shop a couple of years ago for $3.

The 1990 Nintendo World Championships carts. Especially the ones plated gold.

They're worth around at least $5,000, and not all of them are accounted for...

Kizuna encounter pal the thread. Only five known copies to date. The game bombed and roms were rare at that time so most carts would get reworked into art of fighting 3.
