Games that outdid the games that inspired them

Eh, I'd say more like Uncharted > Tomb Raider.

Uncharted is so awesome that it both outtombraidered Tomb Raider and outgearsofwared Gears of War. Why would you outgame only one game and you can outgame two games at the same time. But Naughty Dog didn't stop there, they Naughty Doged themselves after with Uncharted 2 that outuncharteded Uncharted.

I'm doing a DS run on hard and it's pretty brutal. RE4 felt like a straight up action game on the default difficulty. There was ammo everywhere.

Something about DS just creeps me the hell out. Maybe it's the lack of humanity and the vast emptiness of space.
Fair enough amigo. There is a lot of ammo in RE4, but I still found the game to be very tense. I think someone said RE4 was adrenaline horror, I think that's pretty correct. I think a lot of the encounters are often a race to out manuver and kill enimies. For that it's pretty awesome. Make no mistake I don't dislike Dead Space 1. It's a solid shooter and limbs cut-off mechanic is great but playing on medium at least I don't think ammo conservation was a huge part of the game and I never thought it was as tense as most of the time I'd just stand still and plasma cutter it up. Maybe thats the point of the game, the pace is supposed to be slowed, but it dosent make me like it as much as RE4.

But I stand by my Dead Space 2 comment. I was talking with a friend about and could honestly not remember it. It was just more Dead Space.

How on earth can Okami out-Zelda Zelda if it was woeful in its puzzles and dungeon design - you know, the best thing about Zelda?

The main character is a girl. Male audience and all.

Okami is much nicer to look at than any Zelda game, but in terms of actual design it wasn't that strong for me. I think the Zelda formula is a little trite personally, but it's at least more stimulating.

Beyond Good and Evil however, I prefer to any Zelda.

Okami is all style and very little substance.

I think the people who think it's better than Zelda games simply don't like Zelda games to begin with.

Dead Space is nowhere near as good as RE4. That's like comparing Killzone to Half-life 2.

My pick would be Saints Row and RDR > GTA IV

Someone's probably mentioned this already but...

Gears 1 > RE4/Kill.Switch

Uncharted > Tomb Raider <-- This might change with the new TR.

Saint's Row outdid GTA, but only in fun factor.

I'm also a big fan of Darksiders. Such a fantastic game.

Edit:

Perfect Dark > Goldeneye
Had to have played both at the time to know this. Agreed, but it was the same team. Doesn't count.

Some objectionable opinions up in this thread.

Nethack > Rogue
Lode Runner > Space Panic
Parodius > Gradius (as a whole, Gradius Gaiden is probably better than all the Parodius' individually)
Arkanoid > Breakout
Bubble Bobble > The Fairyland Story

I thought of a few, but every time I type them I feel they'll be taken as troll responses. Instead, I'll play it safe: BlazBlue > guilty gear

It doesn't matter if it's the same dev :p

Pump It Up > DDR.

Fact.
Absolutely.

Also, no way Okami > Zelda. The pacing in Okami was terrible. I'm not sure what drew me into the game and why I liked it, but it doesn't hold a candle.

And while Dead Space 2 was a much better game than RE5, it still not up to par to RE4. I think it improves in the mechanics but the pacing of the game and the atmosphere of RE5 but the basic "fun factor" of shooting zombies is not fully utilized.

I'd say Scarface the world is yours > GTA X/

I'm kind of saddened that Red Dead Redemption is being more closely compared to GTA games than Red Dead Revolver.

Anyway...

Batman: Arkham Asylum is, I think, much better than any Batman game before it.

This thread > sane reasonable discussion based on presenting arguments.

Mega Man 9 > Mega Man 2.

Zelda 2 > Zelda 1.

/runs

In all seriousness, I do wish I could agree that Timesplitters 2 > Goldeneye, but I can't convince myself.

came here to post this. implying that okami isnt better than zelda is simply asinine. It does everything zelda does better and with more style. The only real problem with okami is that it has 0 replay value if you get all the beads the first time through. Getting the goddess charm makes you literally unbeatable so it takes the fun out of the progression

Okay, how about not implying, but outright STATING that Okami isn't better than Zelda? because that's what I'm doing right now. is that asinine?

Every single post saying that [insert any current-gen TPS here] is better than Resident Evil 4 is so wrong.

This is approaching Gamefaqs FF7 obsession level right here. Seriously, RE4 has been surpassed. Time to deal and move on.

Saints Row beats the shit out of GTA, if only for its actually decent combat system.

CRACKDOWN better than any grand theft auto, and any incredible hulk game (its closest analogs if you ask me)

RYGAR nes is much better than RYGAR arcade.

and CASTLEVANIA nes is much better than VAMPIRE KILLER on msx.

Agreed. Okami's "dungeons" were laughable.

and just the moment-to-moment moving around and fighting enemies was completely tedious and boring. i'm mystified people are so dazzled by the visuals they can't see what a garbage-ass game it is.

Streets of Rage II> Final Fight > Double Dragon

edit: damn beaten

It's too bad that none of the dozens of beat 'em ups that are better than Streets of Rage 2 were influenced by it, because now I can't continue the > chain.
