Is it wrong to dream for an option to, instead of having to accept a request for Co-Op (or send out an invite), you could simply leave a setting ON so that anyone on your Friends List could pop in at any time? Like, you're running through a level, kind of in a tight spot and all of a sudden,

"*KTK* HELL YEAH, BRO! LET'S KICK SOME LOCUST AYUSS!!"

And I'm all "Twilight what's up, BRO! Let's show these bishes what the 13th is all ABOUT!"

And he's all "HELL YEAH, BRO!"

And it's all

Here's my one and only concern with Gears of War. How are the other characters in your squad handled?

I'm wondering if they are so important to the story that some of them won't die (that core set of four), so you never really have to worry about them. That would take some of the tension out of having to cover for each other and play as a team. On the other hand, if they are critical to the story and can die, would the game force a restart from the last check point? That makes every mission an escort mission. Or, can they die and that impacts the story?

Squad mates get shot and go down and bleed. You essentially lose another gun. In the instance of this game squadmates are also someone to distract the Locust so you can flank them. You can go over and help them back into the fight. Same thing with co-op. If someone is gibbed...well then, that's a fail condition. (pretty rare in SP)

(Didn't want you to have to babysit AI.)

BTW - drop in drop out co-op is the shit.
Very cool. That's a balanced comprimise I would never have thought of. And thanks for the info. :)

I can't believe that people tried to say that Gears had been downgraded that looks amazing.

I just keep looking at the ground texture. It stays perfectly sharp, and well, textured all the way out. Looks ****ing incredible.

Well, to be fair, one person said that.

And after these latest batch of screenies... I doubt we'll see him around these parts again

If they get this game running at a silky smooth framerate, I think it's going to be this year's most technically impressive game.

The enviroments in that latest batch of screens are very drab-- almost Xbox-1-like. But, it might just be how the lighting comes across in these off-screen shots because the direct-feed forest/jungle screen rocks my socks off.

Most technically impressive in regards to character/creature models for sure, but what else?

1) Go look up drab in the dictionary. Drab has to do with a color pallete, not how good something looks. In fact, the bloom lighting would suggest that these shots are the exact opposite of drab.

2) I must have had a broken Xbox, because nothing I ever played on it looked nearly that good.

There are no words. The lighting in those shots is amazing. Shadows are on everything, where they should be. The environments are HUGE, and the textures crisp and detailed.

Wow. :lol

Environment textures, lighting, blood spatter effects, etc.

When you combine the entire package it looks stunning, especially in motion. The only more impressive title I've seen is Untold Legends, which will be GOTY. :)

Yes. "Drab" in regards to color, would be the very literal definition-- thankfully, words have multiple meanings. And I think those screens look flat, boring, and dull, which would also be the definition of drab.

2) I must have had a broken Xbox, because nothing I ever played on it looked nearly that good.

It's similar to the shitty bloom effects on Xbox. But I've already said that might be from the shitty off-screen pictures, rather than the game itself.

These screens are not drab. I dont care if you want to play idiot troll boy, but at least admit that you dont know how you use the word properly instead of trying to argue your way out of bad semantics with more bad semantics.

the antonym for drab is BRIGHT. THERE IS ****ING BLOOM LIGHTING ALL THE **** OVER THE SCREEN. How is that drab?

Thats like looking at the color red and calling it blue. And when someone points out that its red, you counter with "blue can also mean depressing". I know it has multiple meanings, but it doesnt mean you used either one right.

For clarification:

In all seriousness this is one of the only games I've seen where I couldn't think about wanting it to look any better. Maybe the original Ninja Gaiden or Halo: CE came close at the time, but this is something else entirely. This game, from what we've seen, literally looks perfect imho. It's incredible. And I'm betting the gameplay holds true to that too. I can't help it, I'm hyped. I don't care about tonnage anymore, X06 is all about Gears for me, I can't wait.

Wow...you're really trying hard. I hear what you're saying about the game, and I agree that off screen shots aren't the most flattering way to present this game, but calling an entire set of screens drab because one screen happens to come from a shaded region is pretty goofy. Just admit you misused the word and move on. I think the word you were looking for when you said "drab" was "plain"...and I think the loss of detail from off screen captures would make that fairly understandable.

Jesus.

Please stop clogging up this thread with pointless anal comments about how a gritty war game looks "drab"and go read Wii threads for all the colors you can handle.

Because it's getting beyond old at this point.

The off-screen pictures look lovely, the direct-feed, not as much so, but still good.

The more co-op games the better, this does allow off-line co-op, right? I'm playing through a game called Obscure atm with a friend which is good but not great, and I was thinking about how awesome it will be playing Gears with him (he plans to get it on release).

That's what gets me. The scenes in the latest shots are from a war-torn area filled with STONE buildings and stone walkways, with the sun filtering through. Are the stones supposed to be bright orange or something? It looks exactly like it should. The level of detail is insane. Anyhoo - one more guy on my Ignore list. :(

Edit: I swear I didn't see the post above me before I wrote that. :lol

Ever think your looking at a screenshot of a picture of gameplay off a screen thats meant to be seen in motion?

Its like someone taking a picture at the brightest part of a HDR effect in Half-life 2 and saying "look how bright that screen is! It looks it looks like crap!"

I do wonder if there's some kind of explanation within the Gears universe for why they have so much armor on them and what kind of armor it is and why it's so big. I'd like to see Marcus in normal clothes....

This is probably the most impressive screenshot of Gears of War I've ever seen.
gears_of_war_TGS_01.jpg

That one should be more impressive. Looks to be a cutscene, as opposed to gameplay like the others (or at least the shot would suggest that.. subtitles + camera facing the main characte dead on + they're taking up the entire screen, which is the critical part as you can see more detail on the models).

Tieno said:

Answer: because scary monsters from the bowels of the Earth are shooting at them. Also, because the game is on Xbox.

and what kind of armor it is

Funktastic boombastic ghettoblastic assaultactic battle armor.

and why it's so big.

Because they're manly men.

I'd like to see Marcus in normal clothes....

I heard on the sp*ng podcast he's got a 4 page feature in the January GQ.

I assume it's the same thing shown in the second (?) trailer.

I thought so too, but I read that you can chase enemies with it and maybe even slice them (don't if they pulled it off, this was written a while ago). The thing in the trailer did not seem to be precise enough for that kind of thing...

Edit:
Found it (in english):

"The Hammer of Dawn is a satellite beam weapon that you can not only call in but also drag around once the beam hits so you can chase your foes around with it."

http://www.shacknews.com/extras/2006/091506_cliffyb_2.x

No mention of slicing though... :(

Funky Papa

FUNK-Y-PPA-4
I didn't know about the slicing thing. Interesting. I guess we'll see a lot more this X06.

BTW, here's some big ass capture. It is actually an old one (E3 06) but I just wanted to post it at its original res so people could check out the insane detail. You may not like the artistic style (I am not exactly into drag queen shoes) but the level of detail is mindblowing, specially for a shooter.

Quick edit: Oh, no slicing. Seems it's the beam cannon from the trailer.

For those complaining about the bloom lighting, keep in mind this isn't Earth, the game is taking place in a post-apocalyptic setting, after the humans used a scorched earth policy. I'd imagine the ozone (assuming Sera ever had one) is pretty much toast. I'd expect the kind of lighting we're seeing in these shots given the environment.

As to the armor, as has been mentioned: they're fighting the Locusts, a race that can take a massive amount of damage before going down, and likewise can dish out a lot of damage. You don't want to fight the Locusts in a pair of sweat pants or GRAW-gear. Besides, all that blood washes of that armor pretty easy. :D

If there's a question to be asked about the armor, it's why is Marcus wearing it while in prison?

He's not...his friend brings him the armor when he breaks him out.
