So west = white? Still a problem.
The cast isn't all white

I still not on board. And without Masamune Shirow nod (the author) ... is not promising.
The cast isn't all white
Yeah. I'm cautiously optimistic about this...Looks to be the best of what a Hollywood adaptation would be
Casuals are going to be like "wut the hell is this shit?" during the game.

At this point, Got is much more Oshii's baby then it is Shiro

Who said it was? If that's how you interpret that statement then you should check the context in which it was made.
As fucked up as it sounds, casting an Asian in the lead would defeat the purpose of Hollywood adapting it.
I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt on this one. Please explain why Hollywood can't or shouldn't cast an Asian woman in the lead.
Well im not sure how you can look at the cast and take it as "west = white".Who said it was? If that's how you interpret that statement then you should check the context in which it was made.

I'm saying the whole point of Hollywood licensing an Asian property and adapting it to the West is to put either a Hollywood star in there or an unknown White person. That's their working formula. We know this film wouldn't have been greenlighted without a Hollywood star attached, that's why Margot Robbie was initially offered the role, then Scarlett Johannssen. Not even the Japanese owners of the IP expect an Asian in the lead, and probably prefer a Hollywood star there, hence the whole point in licensing it out to them.

While this is the majority of how it works, I take issue with it being the only way Hollywood does things. For example, Pacific Rim wasn't exactly brimming with star power by having Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi in the lead roles.
I don't accept that this is the only way it can be done. Someone had to be the first major black actor/actress (frankly, something that still has room for improvement) and maintaining status quo isn't the way to go about things.
Granted, having China take an interest in movie production is starting to move things along, but I don't accept that a Hollywood Ghost in the Shell can only exist with a white actress.

Am I the only one not at all happy with casting?
Only because Hollywood has pigeonholed itself into cultivating and growing exclusively white and, to a lesser extent, black blockbuster stars. If Hollywood is defined by white leads, then that's their problem. Asian, especially asian female, representation in American media is pathetic. It doesn't matter what Japanese in Japan think about Asians in America. They are a homogenized country in which they are the majority population.
I get and understand why they cast Scarlett Johannsen. She's the female Tom Cruise. She is an action star with international appeal. I'm not really mad and I don't really have anyone in mind with who they could cast instead. But cases like this clearly highlight the problem with Hollywood that I understand why people would be angry.
First, we're talking about licensed Japanese properties and adapting them to the West. Please let's stay on topic, but to answer your other unrelated statements.
Pacific Rim was a new IP that had the cache of Guillermo Del Toro attached to direct. In this instance, the Studio took a risk. No different than a Studio taking a risk on The Wachowski's Jupiter Ascending.
I never said it's the only way it has to be done, but it is the way Hollywood does things.
As fucked up as it sounds, casting an Asian in the lead would defeat the purpose of Hollywood adapting it.
I'm really hoping this entire battle is played to its ambient perfection.

I'll be a happy man if they nail this. The rest of the movie can be mediocre for all I care.
Since we're playing semantics now, let me repost what you just said previously:
You didn't said that that's the way Hollywood does things. You said it defeat the purpose of Hollywood adapting it.
The purpose of Hollywood adapting something is to expose Western audiences to a property that is otherwise inaccessible to the masses. If you're saying the only way to do this is with a white actors (known or otherwise), then you are suggesting that the Western audience will only accept white actors in roles that are specifically designed for Asian characters. I think that Hollywood can absolutely make a licensed Japanese property without shoehorning a white actor into the role and by your own words, you think using anyone but a white person defeats the purpose of adapting a Japanese IP. And that's what I disagree with.
I don't think Hollywood would think of itself pigeonholing themselves. In fact, it's working as intended.

I'm never getting over the fact that we'll not be seeing the Rinko Kikuchi / Ron Perlman tag team, but with that said, I'm stoked for this one. It looks great.
Which is why it's important to call attention to it. We'd be getting a white Black Panther if no one ever said anything. I don't think GitS is an inappropriate movie to be fighting this battle on.
I hope they use thishttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=z64HCi2rQkE as the main theme though.
In all seriousness, GITS is one of those few pieces of science fiction that transcends its genre. I hope the film channels its weirdness.
