God of War Launches Early 2018 (PS4)

TLOU being used as a perjorative is hilarious. Basically saying I want shittier writing and a more forgettable plot in my 7th hack and slash.

There's a lot more to this Kratos than just the voice acting since it's full motion capture. They probably wanted someone who could do a more nuanced portrayal and do the physical acting that is now required.

This is one of the weirdest things I've ever read. I mean you can like what you like. I'll just never understand this point of view. Story is everything to me.

Story is one of the least important things to me in gaming and I also don't understand that point of view. Gameplay and story aren't mutually exclusive, it's possible for a game to do both well. And it's looking like this new God of War is doing just that.

Let's get back on topic. If you don't have the attention span to enjoy a story within a game, then this and many other games simply aren't for you, and that's OK.

I'm blown away that this was shown on the base PS4 I mean this is some wizardry. The combat looks so freaking good too, this is the shakeup the franchise needed. I need more of that exploration and boat footage. The 2 second clip of rowing down the calm stream was bliss to watch.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with giving God of War more character driven plot and story. If recall correctly, one of the biggest complaints about Gow 2/3 was how much of an edgy 2 dimensional brute Kratos became, so I appreciate what they're trying with him. What I am worried about is how much Last of Us we'll see in the story. The Ps3 had the most diverse 1st party catalog of any console, and to have every other 1st party ps4 game have Last of Us smeared all over it is a bit disappointing.

I kind of get why this might feel this way with the the focus on cinematic gameplay of some of the most recent games but taking a look at most of the exclusives I just don't see it.

OT I wasn't sold on the game when first revealed but after this trailer I can't wait to see where this takes the series. Looks amazing graphically also.

Could that head belong to Freyr?

Freyr (Fro Ingwe) is Freya's twin brother. He is the horned god of fertility (similar to the Celtic god Cernunnos). He is known as the King of the Elves (Alfs). The boar is his sacred symbol. His boar, known as Gullenbursti, is supposed to represent daybreak. He is also known as the god of success. Freyr had an association with a horse cult and horses were sacred to him. He is also the lord of prosperity and physical well-being.

He is horned, and this part in particular caught my eye: "He is also the lord of prosperity and physical well-being.". In the trailer we can see a room that is filled with all kinds of treasures and hear someone that despise Kratos and his kind. And Kratos didn't have the head yet.

I absolutely applaud the goal of applying a more mature and better story, but I just wish it didn't star Kratos. I'm pretty much done with him and don't care to see a redemption arc, tbh.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before but did anyone see the giant being lying in the snow!? I love how there are so many things hidden right in plain view but I didn't even notice this at first. The individual's hand seems to be latched around some blunt object, possibly a hammer. My first thought was to assume that this was Thor but I think it's more likely that it's a frost giant. Maybe they're dead, maybe they're lying in wait...who knows!? Guess we'll find out early 2018.

to me, Carson = Kratos. How would people have reacted if ND had to settle with someone other than N North voicing Drake in Uc4?
That wouldn't make sense since UC4 was a direct continuation of the series and Nolan had been doing motion capture for the character already.

This is a re-working of the character and requiring a lot of motion capture work.

Badly because Uncharted has always been narrative-driven with tons of dialogue. Kratos has always been pretty two-dimensional with little spoken dialogue — until now.

I could continue this discussion but I've said my piece in this thread and I don't want to derail it for the rest of you discussing the game appropriately.

Carson is just as important to Kratos for me as North was to Drake.

Well, you gotta live with it, decide to like it or ignore this game. The best answer you will get is that Judge is better suited for this role, if you even get an answer.

And I am inclined to believe that. This is not Kiefer Sutherland replacing David Hayter.

One minor tidbit out of panel that I found interesting was that Shannon Studstill attempted to get Jaffe back first to come up with a new God of War.

Yea he was busy she said. Can't believe he chose to chase Drawn to Death instead of a new GoW.

He seems genuinely burnt out on AAA development, so i'm not surprised. Especially since he actually did throw out that he'd come back to GoW several years ago

A lot of people ask me if I'd ever make another GOD OF WAR (assuming that opportunity was offered) and I always say the same thing: if it were GOD OF WAR meets something like ZELDA (formula wise), then yes (aka Darksiders, right?)…But if it were GOD OF WAR using the current formula, I would not. For me- and this is just me PERSONALLY (I get and respect not everyone shares this same thinking)- directing GOD OF WAR made me realize that as a game designer (and certainly as game director) I want our games to serve the gods of GAMEPLAY first and foremost. My and then team's desire to tell a story/make a movie may or may not get to be fulfilled (depending on the game) but if we do tell a story, it will never come at the expense of the gameplay (the thing that makes our medium matter and special). Games can have story (and many should, such as God of War) and most games- even pure play games- should have strong world and IP. But working on God of War made it clear that- for me- if we have to cut a set piece or bit of spectacle because of our desire to put play first, then so be it. Ideally, the BEST games are those that do both.

I posted earlier it might be Mimir. Beheaded, provides knowledge, Odin carried his head around, demanded an eye from Odin in payment. Seems to check out?

I like that the game does seem to represent a bunch of iconic moments from the mythos. You could tell they were going to encounter Jormungandr as soon as they showed the artwork with them on a boat, because young Thor accidentally (?) confronted the serpent on a fishing trip.

The finishers and combat looks way more gory and brutal than even 3 or Ascension. Look at the brain and blood splatter from the troll head-crush

It looks tame compared to three, there's no blood in this.

Helios and Hermes and brutal deaths in 3.
Those were QTE boss battle finishers. These are in-combat finishers; those never were as gory as the big boss finishers. Except now you're getting viscera and more detail due to the closer camera

My guess is Mimir as you mentioned was beheaded - or Odin himself, who only has one eye. The head in the trailer only has one.

For a bit of fun Norse mythology trivia, the World Serpents real name is Jörmungandr. He is one of Loki's three children, and the mortal enemy of Thor. He is so huge, he can wrap his body around the Earth and grasp the tip of his own tail.

Watching the E3 Coliseum... Man this game looks like it has taken it's toll on Corey. That's interesting to hear that Shannon approached Jaffe first... Part of me is sad knowing he turned it down, and knowing we'll probably never get another God of War from him. This is certainly the next best thing though. It looks absolutely incredible.

What are the chances that Atreus grows into becoming Thor? Say if at the end of their journey, Kratos is killed by Jormungandr, Atreus goes on to be known as Thor and seeks to kill the serpent and the Gods who hunted them. Kratos is trying to forge the boy into a warrior and so during their journey, he gradually becomes increasingly more callous until the end he becomes consumed with vengeance. I just figured he's coincidentally come across Jormungandr on the sea and the serpent seems treacherous, so I don't think that development is too far fetched. Who knows, maybe he becomes Vidar.

this scene got me so hyped

I love the idea of Kratos' exploits becoming myths in other cultures.

I'm really intrigued to see how they frame him within the world.

He was an absolute animal in the previous trilogy, but he's older, wiser and perhaps not quite as powerful as he once was. I thought it was interesting that they showed one shot where he got absolutely smacked, I'm not sure if that was trying to allude to a new sense of vulnerability.

I'd love to see an anger-induced bout of the blades near the end of the game for old times' sake. I like the idea of almost portraying him a little bit like Wolverine in Logan - he's not quite what he was but he's not finished yet.

Idk, you eviscerate centaurs in GOW3. That's pretty graphic but I agree this game is nowhere near as gory as it's predecessors.
