GRAVITY |OT| - From Director Alfonso Cuarón

wishes it were bannable to say mean things about Marvel
I got bamboozled. The way everyone was talking I was expecting a Gattaca level sci-fi movie, but I got Prometheus, overall eye candy but other than that...

Did you just compare Gravity to....Prometheus? Seriously???

It's okay to dislike Gravity but holy shit, you don't need to insult it like that....

I got bamboozled. The way everyone was talking I was expecting a Gattaca level sci-fi movie, but I got Prometheus, overall eye candy but other than that... Sandra bullock I don't know, her acting is annoying, I felt nothing from watching her, most of the emotion and tension came from what was happening in the general the scene or the music being played. Clooney's character didn't seem like a real person he felt like the comic relief character in a movie, even in his heart felt last
suicidal
moments he's cracking jokes till the radio cuts off, kinda killed the mood.
sound familiar? Hands Up!
. The dialogue in this movie in general is just corny and badly written.

5/10

I think this has been said many times, but many people in NASA and Neil have already stated that characters just like Clooney exist. SUper calm and relaxed even in the most intense situations. That is their job, not to panic in fucking space.

And comparing it to Prometheus? C'mon son...

Saw this again tonight but in 3d this time. The 3d was good, maybe the best 3d I've seen, right up there with The Hobbit but I'm not big on 3d so it wasn't a huge additive aside from a few moments.

Still a great, heart pounding experience even though I know all the outcomes. Even with a second viewing I still had no issues with the dialog or themes. The movie just draws me in starting with that amazing opening.

First time ever that I went for a second viewing on a film. Just had to do it as the experience will never be as fanastic on the home screen.

Boy oh boy, that fricking 17 minute opening shot. It will get me every single time how pitch perfect it is setting up the film and the surroundings. The cinematography is just godlike and conceptualized so incredibly well.

And where on first viewing I thought some of the dialogue was a bit mediocre I actually take that back on second viewing. The dialogue fitted every moment very well. I'm still not a fan of her final speech before her descent but I count that up to her being slightly traumatized and not thinking very straight.

This fucking movie. Good lord.

I was so hyped going in, that I was scared the movie could only let down. But noooope, this movie was 90 minutes of the best cinema I've ever seen. In fact, it might be my best cinema going experience ever. I've never before done multiple watches, but with Gravity I will.

The visuals and music are breath taking, and the performance from Clooney and Bullock were great! I had goosebumps half the time.
The re-entry scene where you get a top view of Stone's pod flaming through the atmosphere surrounded by debris. Whoaaa.

Also, I was reminded a lot of other movies. The obvious one being
Wall-e
, but another was
when Stone is crashing into the asmosphere her shaking around in her chair all I saw was Jodie Foster going through a wormhole. ;-)

I saw this today, it was the first time I've seen a movie in 3D and I really enjoyed it and was surprised to find that it really added a lot to this particular experience. There's a part where Clooney looks in the mirror on his wrist and the 3d effect was a really cool sensation.

For me it's the first film where its an absolute necessity to see it in (3D) big screen cinema.

Outside of maybe image-porn films like Baraka and Samsara I can't think of any other film that will not give me similar enjoyment watching it at home.

You could argue for 65mm films like Lawrence of Arabia or The Master but I actually do get the magic of those films on the home screen.

Avatar I refused to watch because I didn't want my first 3D film experience to be ruined by such a crappy predictable story.

The Hobbit 3D HFR I actually did see (first 3D film experience) in IMAX. I found it horrible due to the HFR. Hated the entire experience.
I'm looking forward to see it in 2D and maybe actually enjoy the story.

Second 3D film I saw in theater was Werner Herzog's Cave of the Forgotten Dreams. And though for that movie 3D is certainly necessary for the proper experience it is also a fairly low-def film which you could easily enjoy on regular 3d screen.

So for me that leaves Gravity the only film which I'm going to have to see multiple times just to experience the effect the way it can only be experienced.

So... I´m kinda hyped for this movie and can´t really decide if I should see it in 3d or 2d (not the biggest fan of 3d unless it actually adds something to the movie).

Would you guys recommend seeing it in 3d? Is the 3d any good or is it like Marvel movie 3d bad?

The 3D is really good. Whole different league compared to Marvel movie 3D.
The script was originally titled 'Gravity: A Space Suspense in 3D'. It was designed from the very start as a 3D movie. You can tell. Go see it in 3D.

If you can't see this film in 3D, I wouldn't bother with it at all until the blu-ray release. Big screen + 3D is the only way to see this at the cinemas, otherwise you'd be wasting your money.

I can't remember if it was this thread or another thread, but someone was asking if they should watch this film in Atmos or D-box. Here's how I would personally rank my experiences, based on the random theaters I've been to:

IMAX > Any theater that promises high luminescence projection (which I guess includes LieMAX :( ) > D-Box >= Atmos > "regular".

Have yet to watch the film in 2D though... I don't think I've seen a 2D screening around here.

I loved the 3D in this, probably my favorite one so far and I didn't even see it in IMAX. Some of the movie riding too obviously on coincidences broke the immersion for me tho, I could barely overlook the perfect timing of virtually every action taken by Ryan

I also loved the sense of tranquility I got in the theater, getting into space only became more interesting to me after this movie

I got a question about something
during Ryan's dream was there something in it that gave away that it was a dream before it was over? Or was it all basically possible to happen in real life as well

Yes, if you know enough science, a human upon exposure to space, will lose consciousness within a few seconds, eardrums ruptured due to pressure explosion, body deforming. I thought that was unusual that nothing happened until it was revealed it was a dream.

I liked that the scientific accuracy inconsistencies listed on the wiki were the same things I noticed when watching the movie.

Come on, she CAN pull Clooney in. Also noted the tears shouldn't be rolling off since that's implying there's gravity to pull the tears down.

Saw it for the second time today, this film is fucking incredible. I thought it was more affecting the second time around.

The entire sequence in the capsule after she gets away from the ISS is just a fucking roller coaster of emotions.

I did have one thing that both times I thought was a little odd.
Is there no manual eject of the parachute from the pod? From when she had to go outside at the ISS station and remove it and the wave of debris hit. Not a big deal obviously and maybe those don't actually have that function, but it seems like something they would.

I really enjoyed this as well. Any time Stone was desperately reaching for a hand hold got me worked up.

If anybody wants a good companion piece for this movie, I highly suggest Europa Report. They collaborated heavily with NASA for realism. Just a great movie all around. And would make a great double feature with Gravity.

I feel the opposite. I don't think I'd be able to see it again. Once feels like more than enough to leave a lasting imprint on my soul. I don't know if I'm alone when I say this but it made me feel like I was stranded in space, like I was literally contemplating my fate in that situation. There's one part where I would've gave up.

Such a powerful movie. I walked out and looked up at the sky wondering who was orbiting around right now.

I don't think I'll get a fraction of that feeling the second time... makes me sad.

I saw it in 2d and found it incredible, not sure if you saw it in only 3d but the movie didn't feel lacking. I agree with the big screen thing though, and you need the cinema speakers, sound played a massive part the suspense.

Saw it in IMAX 3D and there is what one 3Dish scene? As long as you aren't seeing it in a shit size screen its fine.

I saw it today and I liked it a lot. I still think it didn't really need 3D, but the 3D also didn't really take me out of the movie except when I tilted my head so I won't knock it either.

I wanna see the pain train that's coming towards the Russians for destroying the Explorer, ISS, China's lab, so many other satellites, and killing so many.

Certain scenes reminded me of Modern Warfare 2.

I saw it again today and I felt the same way. Was shaking after I left the theater. Somehow it was even more tense the second time

Just saw it, 3D was awesome and i think it's the way it should be watched, at least the first time.

Movie was pretty tense and the photography was amazing as expected.

Actually, ain't Stone's plot points being slightly unnecessary?
I can understand Clooney's telling his stories in an effort to keep both of them calmed down. But the angle of Stone not being very good at piloting didn't really affect much on her actions. (Yeah she forgot there's the landing rockets but that's nothing to do with piloting expertise).
The story of the daughter felt more like a sidetrack unless someone analyses the film.

The training mentions allow us to believe that she can fly a Soyuz, even though she would have no reason to train on the Soyuz for a shuttle mission, nor would she know where anything is on the ISS, but that's how it goes.

The daughter stuff was just tied to "letting go" and "moving on", because in these types of movies, you have to have a section where the protagonist considers giving up and resigning themselves to their fate before the climax.

Fantastic film. I absolutely did not expect it to be as tense as it was. I definitely caught myself cringing, gasping, and shouting in my head during multiple moments.

Also, I hate 3D but I decided to give it a shot considering there were no 2D showings at my time, and I was extremely impressed. One of the two films I can remember seeing where I genuinely enjoyed and appreciated the film in 3D. I definitely think that's the way to see it the first time around.

saw gravity today and I gotta say I cant imagine seeing this movie in 2D. while the 3D isn't perfect, there is some cross talk here and there, this is the first time I've been impressed by 3D in a movie and it adds so much to the experience.

my only complaints were:

-the fetal position scene
-the last scene with the over the top triumphant music and American symbolism. imo when Clooney showed back up they should have kept that going. have both make it back suddenly ryan startles awake only to be still on the Soyuz and the last bit ends up being an hallucination due to low oxygen. then cut to the aurora borealis scene and fade to credits.

I don't get what is so "American" about the ending, considering she needs the Chinese to save her. Hell, if anything, it points to the failure of NASA and the future of the Chinese as major players in space. :p

Also, why does everything have to be grimdark...

you hear houston radio in they've sent a rescue then the pod lands in the water and the chute blows in the wind like an American flag against the over the top music. someone sitting behind me whispered America fuck ya so im not the only one that noticed.

everything doesn't have to be grimdark. very few movies do dark endings and it would have worked well in this one imo. would make more sense than someone with less than 6 months training being able to perform the feats done in this movie.

The parachute was red and white, so I dunno... at no point did I associate that with America anyway. But then again, I'm not American so maybe that's why. lol

And if you are going to talk about making sense... the entire movie itself is impossible!

I love the way that scene was shot, I don't find it distracting at all. Also not sure where you get American symbolism, I think you are reading too much into it.
I think she was in Russian suit in a knockoff Chinese version of Soyuz, I don't see anything that scream fuck yeah Murica. I would be ok with fade to black but I think this ending work fine with the theme.

I watched the movie in 3D.
No movie set in space since Alien has absorbed me as much as Gravity. The movie is outstanding, glorious and surpasses everything out there on so many levels. You actually feel the space in cinema you feel alone and quiet. It's phenomenal.

I got sooo many mixed reviews on this movie. It shows that everything on this planet is a matter of taste. I can't blame you for your opinion on Gravity. But I think you're missing certain things about this movie. It isn't just visually compelling it is so much more than this. Everything about it screams art and for my personal taste it is state of the art sci fi cinema.

Thanks for the reminder about Europa Report. It seemed like it had potential to be great from the trailer I saw, but I for sure watch it asap.

Saw Gravity last night and loved it, my viewing is a bit tainted though as I had to go out of my comfort zone to see a 2D version, and the theatre I was at was terrible with a terrible audience.

I saw it tonight in 3D with some "4DX" enhancements ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4DX ) and it's one of the best movies I've seen in quite some time. Really good use of 3D, and the motion of the 4DX seats made some scenes really come alive. I was legit scared in a lot of scenes in the movie and the stark isolation and loneliness of the characters (only two actors in the entire movie excluding voices) was really gripping. Good soundtrack as well.

Why the late UK release for this?

Wasn't the UK like 6-12 months late getting The Thing (2011) as well?

Wow, that makes D-Box look like amateur hour. Although what did they actually do? Blow wind when something big happened? lol

When I first saw trailers for this movie I thought it would be pretty lame. When it first came out I saw a bunch of good reviews so I figured I'd give it a shot.

Yeah, the trailers don't convey any of the feel of the actual movie. I walked into my first viewing (I've seen it three times so far) not really expecting too much because the trailers left me feeling kind of meh. But man o man, the movie was so different in feel. It was so....visceral, and relentless, and emotional in it's rawness. It literally drew you in and kept ahold of you, and put the audience through the ringer along with the characters. One of the most engrossing movies I've ever seen.

Damn, I need to go see it again.
