Halo 3 Hype Train Pitstop: EGM's gotta leak

Man......that sucks.

I think you just need a Cat5 cable. But, doesn't the 120 Gb hdd come with some special software that enables you to transfer saves? I'm guessing the Halo 3 hdd won't come with that software either.

Weren't MS giving these away for free if you ask them? Just get one in advance.

Doubt it. Although I wish we could do something like give EB or Gamecrazies a couple of cables for new purchasers of Elites and Halo 3 boxes that option on site. In the majority of cases however, it will be new purchasers.
Can I bet against you on that one? IMO the Halo 3 360 is the ultimate collectors item for a Halo hardcore, and obviously those fans got the 360 already. In my case I will just shell out the money.

The whole "it wouldn't be Halo with online co-op" is such a friggin BS cop-out. A COMPROMISED experience is better than no experience at all. Stinkles made the EXACT same argument when talking about Virtua Fighter 5 online. Give people the choice.

I have to confess that I'd much rather see the loading zones and teleportation from previous games return, if it means online co-op can be workable. As long as the loading zones can be placed in a somewhat sensible place, like in Halo 1, which tended to be at the end of rooms or through certain doors, instead of somewhat arbitrarily in Halo 2 (such as directly in the middle of a room, causing a pause mid-combat).

The problem of course is that in a gigantic outdoor environment, it would likely be hard to place loading zones without designating areas arbitrarily, and if there's no indication that you're going into another area, it would cause a lot of issues in a large environment; it works poorly in small environments.

It would definitely be cool if you could be separated by a game mile, with lots going on at either end, but if a compromise is needed - and as long as we're informed that there is one - I don't have a problem with it.

I'm a pretty hardcore halo fan and I don't have a 360 yet. Didn't want to spoil my experience with an unfinished game by playing beta and as the game isn't out til September I see no point in having a 360 until then. :D

lol wut?

Much like the 3 MP map issue, I saw the scans, but still picked up the regular mag to read the entire article, any major Halo fan will probably do the same regardless of havin the info paraphrased here.

hmm I started thinking that more deeply and I realized that the most hardcore Halo 3 fans I know have actually been waiting for Halo 3 to come out before buying a 360. Most likely Stinkles is right then.

agreed. Can't wait for mine to come in the mail to see those pics and actually be able to read the whole thing.

Yeah, I think September NPD will be a barrel of laughs because of this very situation. :lol

Hey everyone...I really appreciate you guys refraining from linking to scans or putting up direct transcriptions. I know that's the official policy here, but I still appreciate it.

And thanks to those guys saying stuff along the lines of "for EGM's sake." Yeah, this leak majorly sucks for us. It affects how the companies work with us, affects how we'll get exclusives, hurts our newsstand sales (we count on those as a big part of our revenue).... We need exclusives to stay relevant in today's Internet world...and having this early printer leak only damages our business.

So I know I can't prevent the news from spreading...but those of you who are still going to read or buy the actual printed issue, thank you.

I will definitely buy this edition (and I was -not- planning to before this leak). I don't think overall you have to worry too much about losing sales due to this leak. For me it was like an advertisement for this issue!

Of course... the problem with Halo 3 is that MS are unlikely to drop their price before it comes out, which means that they're going to end up selling far less than they could have if they used the price drop to push Halo 3 / GTA 4 sales.

Unless they drop between Halo and GTA. But that would go down like a lead balloon with the people that purchased for Halo. :lol

Eh. They'll be too busy playing to give a shit.

Could some one explain what this means for game play?

"forge:

You can turn your Spartan into a Halo Monitor and back again. That's pretty much it. Full control over a map's spawned items except for the Elephant. Multiplayer, although player count unknown. Everyone gets a Monitor. Create your own gameplay, or whatever that stupid buzzword is. Divergent, or something. Will track Spartan's stats for goal based play, although won't have any rules enforced."

Its just not clicking what they mean by Monitor, do you take you head off?

anyone any ideas?

Halo Monitor. Like Guilty Spark and what's his name.

You can edit all the spawns and can pick up/throw/delete anything on the field.

When you go into monitor mode you into a mode similar to "Keys to the City" in crackdown. I suppose they did this because the UI is complex and you cannot fight while spawnning items.

If you've played Halo 1 or 2's Campaign. Monitors are the little floating eyes that control the Halo rings. Well they don't control it as much as they "Monitor" it. Each ring has its own monitor.

Installation 04: 343 Guilty Spark
Installation 05: 2401 Penitent Tangent

Is there only one monitor per ring?

Wow, didn't know this was a leak from the printers. That explains the shitty nature of the scans (really just cellphone shots).

Forge and the Gravity hammer really are going to change up Halo multiplayer. Being able to wack grenades and vehicles, and have game types built around the Hammer and low gravity (like Hammer time) sound really, really fun. Its nice to see more game play built around physics.

As said in the last thread Forge really does seem like a Garry's Mod type of feature, the ability to have a game full of people and have a designated person on each team controlling weapon and player spawns for their team on the fly could be awesome... given the right people.

UNSC Hornet looks similar to the C&C GDI Orca. With a verticle canopy, two lift fans (or jets, hard to tell in the pics) mounted above the canopy, and two winglets mounted below with handles for 1 person on either side. It also mentions some form of armament, so they won't be defenseless.
The ability to move squads of people to specific places on the map is going to be huge in objective games, especially with the new class of large maps in Halo 3 like sandtrap. We've always wanted a Pelican-type craft, but that is really too large to be practical. A multiplayer version of the Hornet is very, very likely.

They refer to the Flash as a piece of equipment, NOT a grenade type. This may be an error, or there is still another grenade type to be revealed.

Terminals hidden in the maps dispense back story in some interesting way...

Some sort of plasma-flamethrower crazy awesome thing was shown. But no real details.

Dual shotguns... awesome, pure awesome. Though with the resurgence of the standard shotty, that may still be the best all around way to go.

I am getting ridiculously excited about this game. Bungie, whatever you are doing - keep doing it! Halo 3 is going to be jaw-droppingly amazing.

Fixed.

I think the Hornet will be better than the Pelican and more practical. It's going to have to take off and move pretty quickly if its going to make it into Multiplayer because the passengers are VERY exposed.

The Flash was shown as a piece of equipment with a picture and everything so I doubt it was a mistake. But a Flash deployable equipment that you look at and it screws up your vision is different than a grenade that you throw into a room and shocks/stuns anyone in the area

I wonder if a passenger can bring along a bubble shield attached to the wing... Though I remember Bungie talking about vehicle-mounted bubble shields, can't remember their final decision (if they made one) though.

Yeah, the Flash may simply white-out and deafen your HUD. Whereas the hypothesized grenade may stun shields like an EMP grenade or both.

I hope the new grenade doesn't have any visual flash effects. They are so damn annoying in CS where 50% of all flashes are from your teammates being stupid.

I'm not seeing where the Flare is described as equipment. It's in that same box as Invincibility which... well I guess there's a chance that's equipment, but I think a nade and a powerup are more likely.

It's not like there aren't any pictures of the other nades or anything, and that picture looks so much like the 4th nade's icon it's uncanny. That might just be the art book shot or whatever though, I've never seen it.

Thinking about it, I really hope the flare is equipment, because if it had its own grenade slot, chances are that means you'd see them much more often. And would anyone really want Flashbang's going off in their face every 30 seconds?

I don't know what a PSD is, but Stinkles confirmed that it ships with a wired headset, not wireless. It was originally communicated to Bungie incorrectly. I think that's another indication that the box will be priced affordably (no wireless headset, 20 GB HD, etc).

PSD=Photoshop file.

I missed it when they revised/retracted that part of the system. The sad part is that the wireless headset was what pushed me into the "buy" column for the system (work Xbox FTW!).

Now, if it costs more than the Premium SKU, forget it.

I dont see it in multiplayer given it would totally **** up CTF. Either that, or its really slow moving. Just imagine how easy the flag carrier could get away though.

Everything has a counter. Rockets, missile pod, friendly air craft, hell even grenades, not to forget the aforementioned vulnerability of anybody hanging on to the side of one to someone with scope...

Speaking of hype, folks on gaf who read anything I say about Halo will know that I am generally fair minded and inclined to denounce megatons, reduce expectations and generally downplay Halo stuff, but I have to say, and just this once - I am genuinely, positively excited to play the game in its current state - and I am almost giddy with excitement to share it with you guys when it's released.

The feature set, the balance, the look and feel, the surprises you still don't know about, (or fully understand) everything. It's the best thing we've ever made.

And now back to our regularly scheduled downplaying of expectations.

Just now? I've been like that since the Beta ended. :(

For anyone who played the Beta and has paid close attention to what Bungie has said in Updates and interviews - and not said - I think it's clear that Bungie is immensely pleased with the game they are about to complete. Coming from a studio that is intensely self-critical by nature and has incredibly high standards for gameplay, sound, story telling, innovation and general execution, I'm tremendously excited to see what they've cooked up.

Fanboy goggles aside for a moment, it looks like Bungie took all the lessons they could from the tumultuous development cycles of the first two games. The Beta was incredibly refined; it felt like something from a studio with confidence. They nailed the gameplay, but as I've been saying for a good six months or so, I think it's the feature set that is going to set the game apart. I have a feeling they've created something special, and it's going to surprise even obsessive fans such as myself.

Okay, goggles back on.
