Heavy Rain - A Neogaf Official Thread on the Gaming Forum

I'm going to admit that I've been so hyped up for this game that the demo was underwhelming. There was some tearing (not a lot), the voice acting (especially the prostitute) was not great and kinda took me out of it at times, and some of the QTEs seemed like forced interaction (especially shaking the controller). That being said, I still have it pre-ordered and am looking forward to playing the actual game.

If anyone is interested, Amazon has it for a few bucks cheaper, I think, and no tax helps. They offered me another free month trial of Amazon Prime, so I'm getting free release day shipping for it :-D

I loved the first quarter of Fahrenheit and hoped to find more of it in Heavy Rain, but the early footage made me a little sceptical. However after playing the demo I was convinced this was exactly what I wanted and I went to preorder the special edition, because I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff.

I'm going to make my first playthrough my "real" playthrough. So no roleplaying, just making choices which I would make when I was in the character's shoes and no restarts after the possible death of a character. Makes the game even more compelling for me I think.
Same here. Hopefully Heavy Rain has a lot of replay value.

Did the game get a 7 from Edge or was that a lie?
I wonder if anyone else thinks 7 from Edge would be a good score for this game? I was kind of relieved as I was thinking they could easily give it like 4 or 5 if it doesn't have enough classical gameplay or something. Then again they gave Fahrenheit 8, so I don't know.

As an architecture student, I can't wait to see how Ethan's story pans out. (probably not going to have much to do with the game though other than simply a background info)

Actually... in his introduction scene
you can choose to sit down and do work on a new house. As you do several stages of QTE:s it gets progressively more detailed. It feels pretty much like drawing, beginning with a rough sketch and then adding detail, inking lines, rubbing out the pencil lines etc.

9/10 EUROGAMER!

Heavy Rain also won't be for everyone. Not everyone will accept the way it sometimes offers prompts even when they may have no impact on actual events. For all the game's flexibility and manifold outcomes, there are also times that you may wish to do something that is not available, as the illusion of free will and suspension of disbelief strains at the writer's narrative leash. Perhaps most damning, for some, will be the realisation as the game reaches its narrative apex that the bonds of empathy it has fought to establish were somewhat diversionary.

It would be a shame to look past Heavy Rain for these reasons, however, because while it is an intricate game that deserves to be debated for a long time, it is also a simple one to enjoy: a thrilling mystery, cleverly composed, and unlike anything else you will play this year. It may also be the only game you play this year where pulling the trigger makes you really feel something, and I can think of no greater compliment.

Destuctoid gave it a 7.

I knew Jim Sterling was going to give it a douchey write-up when he wrote an editorial the other day about how insulting the game was to gamers.

dude, it's destructoid. They hate good gaming.

.

GI & Eurogamer? Wow!

I still think D Cage is a wanker but I fucking loved the demo... it just reminded me of the old point and click adventure games, esp. sierra's gabriel knight series.

I just watched the first 9 minutes video and 2 things stood out.

First. That dude put back on the same dirty underwear after he got out of the shower.

Second. The voice acting was really really bad. This game more than any other needs great voice acting. I don't understand how this could happen. There is no good reason that games like Mass Effect and Uncarted should have better voice acting then Heavy Rain. Is that just a problem with the voice actor for that one character?

It probably has a lot to do with the fact that the studio is French, and they were busy having the game dubbed into a ridiculous amount of languages. I do wish SCEE had better oversaw this aspect of development however..... but SCEE blows.

They have good reviews some time but at other times, it's terribly transparent that they want to get hits. This review is one example. The AC2 review that gave the game 4.5 is another.

After playing the demo I understand the high scores.. A few months ago I was expecting the game to bomb, I had a real bad feeling about it.

So glad I was wrong. :D
Special Edition, hurry up and land in my mailbox!

Is it me or every time a new PS3 exclusive releases, one website says something like "'true indicator of what the PS3 can do"? Geez

Needs more Nolan North? :lol

I still haven't played the demo, but I've had it preordered for quite a while though. As long as the demo can live up to the Fahrenheit demo, I'll be keeping my preorder.

Has anyone else went on a media blackout besides playing the demo?

I do not want to know anything about the storyline before I play the game. IMO - seeing too much of the game will take away from the experience.

Jim Sterling is insulting to gamers. Jesus.

Yes there is. Unlike Uncharted which has probably an hour, tops, of motion-captured cutscenes, Heavy Rain is all motion-captured and also has its cutscenes optional and interactive. That's a heck of a lot more time needed to have these people available.

Is it an adventure game? Is it an interactive movie? Is it the joyful union of cinema and game so long coveted by Kojima’s four-day-long Metal Gear cut-scenes?

Hyperbole and gross exaggeration seem to be Gameradar's bread and butter.

Length has nothing to do with it. ME2 is ALL talking and a majority of those conversations even though pieced together through decisions seem to come off fine.

I know it won't reflect the final product and it will still be a wonderful game but when the game is centered around its story the voice actors should be the #1 priority. Time should have nothing to do with it.
