Yeah, I've been worry about this as well. More so the voice acting than the actual dialogue however.

Out of interest as I see this a lot, is it ironic? Kane is clapping at an appalling performance by his wife.

I would think so.

Unless somebody used a gif without *gasp* knowing where it is from? *gasp*.

I think it'll do well critically, probably metacritic around high eighties, low nineties. I think I like Fahrenheit a lot more than most people, but it did pretty well with the press.

I think it will be somewhat polarizing, with certain reviewers being uncomfortable with it being so different from traditional games, but if it's as good as Indigo/ Fahrenheit started out (I liked scenes like the opening diner scenes a lot more than the later segments in the game), I expect mostly positive marks. But I also expect to feel like it deserved higher ratings than it will actually get. It almost always works that way for me with this type of game.

Also, this from the Kotaku AU impressions of the preview build:

Another more worrisome detail is the quality of the voice-acting, which sounds as if accents are being suppressed and characters are talking in isolation, conversation being stitched together rather than occurring in person. There is time for that to be improved.

This is quite troublesome. For a game that nails far more abstract concepts like atmosphere and emotion, how can voice acting be an issue? Developers like Bioware who make far more "gamey" games have great dialogue and voice acting, so I'll be incredibly disappointed if Quantic Dreams can't get the voice work and dialogue right.

It hasn't been too bad in the few preview/ demo scenes I've watched.

I'm curious to know what is the original language for this game and the game's script. French? English? I'm hoping whichever that language is (if it isn't English, my native language) will also be available. Sorry for not knowing the answers, but I've been avoiding most media lately after getting a painful spoiler in a preview for another game last year.

Last weekend, my dad (who detests videogames) was over and got all excited about "some PS3 game he heard about. An interactive thriller, with several characters and an outcome based on your actions."

So I went into the PSN-Store, downloaded the latest Heavy Rain trailer, asked him if that's game he meant, he said yes, I shook his hand and told him "congratulations. You're officially a gamer now."

LOL Your dad a non gamer is excited for it and yet i bet lots of 'gamers' are just gonna shit on HR regardless of how good it is as to some there is no room for anything different in the games market.

Out of curiosity how did your dad find out about HR?

Someone at work was browsing a screenshotgallery of the game to show it to another colleague (both gamers). They talked about it a bit, so that's how he picked up that this game exists.

Can't wait to play this game. After seeing the trailers my mom and siblings are interested in this game too but with it actually having full nudity, naahhh would be way too awkward. Can't even watch a real movie with nudity with them:lol Violence we don't mind at all, it can be decapitating heads in the most violent ways, that wouldn't be awkward, weird how my family is...

Start watching a lot of porn together, start with mild Playboy TV and work up to Sasha Grey getting full anal DP. After that, watching nudity in this game will be a breeze.

This month Official PlayStation magazine has the exclusive review of Sony's first exclusive of 2010: Heavy Rain. Subscribers copies are now in the wild so we can reveal the magazine has scored the game a stellar 9/10 and given it a coveted gold award.

With this in mind, we wandered over to OPM UK's office for a quick chat with the author of the review, Tim Clark (Editor-in-chief) to find out what led to his verdict on the game, in advance of our own review next month.

Visually up there with Uncharted 2? If that's the case, Sony are putting out some rough material.

Needs more stealth.

EDIT: sorry i thought you were implying Uncharted 2 was average looking. yeah, I haven't been super blown away by the heavy rain stuff either, great stills but the trailers are... above average but not stunning by a long way.

You don't think the games a looker?
I don't know really, some times I think it looks incredible, like the Taxidermist level, then some times I think it looks like shit like the Mad Jack level. However I don't think I've seen anything from that new of a build. It could have improved a lot.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Just wondering, will this game have point-and-click elements? (meaning you pick up something, combine it or use it, etc. just like Day of the Tentacle/King's Quest)

One of the worst discussions I ever heard about the game. "The Story might be what drives this game." Well no shit....

Mmyeah, I just saw that trailer with the dad and his kid again, and man is his voice acting bad :-( You can hear some kind of fake pronounciation from a mile away at some of the sentences ("I never asked myself that Quwestyion...", "Sometimes, it's berra not to know..."). Considering that those two sentences alone make almost half the monologue in the trailer, that's not very encouraging. English is not even my native language, but I have a good ear for this kind of thing. I'm gonna stick with French voices for this, no matter how silly that will be for a story that takes place in New York.

Yea, in the podcast I just linked too the two guys both agree that the VA sounded like placeholders on SEVERAL of the characters. On a near final build of the game. Not good. :(

Just reserved this game yesterday. Anyone who has Qore I recommend checking out the Heavy Rain section of the latest episode. It really gives you an idea of the consequences for your choices through the menu based choice game that is set up within one of the main features of the Qore section.

Yes, as you can imagine, VA is almost never a placeholder. If it was considered good enough for the trailer, I really doubt they are going to find different actors to re-record voices for such dialogue heavy game.

Not to mention that even having a character say "How far would I be prepared to go for love", to me doesn't really sound like proper English. I see on the website now they have the title "How far would you be prepared to go to save someone you love" which sounds exactly the way the original sentence probably intended - but I again doubt they are going to change the script and re-record audio to iron out such linguistic quirks.

It's all the more weird considering how good VA was in Fahrenheit, in comparison.

This game will not get high scores all around thats for sure. Specially from trigger-happy kill-everyone-stat-whoring shooter fans. This game needs to be reviewed with a mature mind set and not by teens.

It has to be reviewed as an interactive experience. It's not an action, adventure, or fast-paced game. Yes, it needs to be approached by a mature mind who wants a compelling story and deep character interaction and all that. It's a niche title so the review scores will be all over the place.

The reviews will ultimately be irrelevant, Heavy Rain (much like it's predecessor) will unfortunately not appeal to the teens you mention.

Regardless, the game will feature French dialog which you can enable with English subs. So if you feel like the acting isn't up to par, I'm almost positive Mr. Cage's native language will remedy the issue. ;)

I guess so, but I feel that the game will have more of an emotional impact if my eyes aren't diverted from the action on screen to read subtitles.

It's fair to say some press will love it, while others will dislike it. Personally, I'm certain that I will enjoy this game for its storytelling and awesome visuals.

Really, regardless of reviews, I'm picking this one up.
(Err...well....unless the game gets absolutely piss-poor reviews from every single source possible. In which case I'll rent :p)
It looks to be the first hour or two of Indigo Prophecy turned into a full-fledged game, without supernatural elements.

That alone is worth my money.

It really seems to be one of the creepiest games to be available, and I love the idea of controlling every aspect of the story through your characters.

Can't wait for it, regardless of what reviews have to say.

Well, give it a shot in English and if you really feel that the acting is genuinely pulling you out of the experience, you will have to rely on the premium French acting and suffer the occasional eye-strain of reading subs.

I'm numb to reading subs now since my youth consisted of endless anime viewing.

heh, my dad REALLY dislikes videogames too. but i remember when i showed him some GTAIV (non-violent stuff lol) and explained how much hard work had went into creating all the traffic and dynamic weather etc, he kinda nodded his head and was interested in what i was saying...

i hope i can show him Heavy Rain when he's visiting me at my place next time, maybe he'll go another step further in understanding that games are not all that bad/childish/unevolved/whatever as an entertainment form.. the great thing is, i think Heavy Rain will have Finnish language subtitles! (thanks Sony/QD) so my dad can actually understand whats going on and look at the whole thing like he would a movie (he's kind of a movie buff). i think im gonna let him play some scenes and just watch what happens, hah.

:lol :lol :lol

Torgo, you hear that, he just called you a teen.

Maybe the voice actors sound a bit robotic or detached at times, but (maybe because I'm not a native English speaker) it doesn't stick out too much. Anyway, storytelling is about so much more than just dialogue. If the art direction is appropriately evocative, if the structure of the narrative is sound and if the cut scenes are well directed, I can see myself overlooking a few corny lines.

BTW, is anyone still worried about that 'You go girl!' -line? :/

Comments like this ignore the fact that even gamers who LIKE the concept of a neo-adventure game with an emphasis on storytelling, dialogue & character may hate this game because the story, dialogue, character & VA are so damn bad. The VA in the trailers has been goddamn awful so far.

My big concern with this game is that it will bomb not because of the concept but because of the execution, yet game financers will be so struck by the lousy sales that they won't fund another game like this for another five years. that'd be a shame. I'd LOVE to play a game like this, but that game still has to be good (on all the grounds that Heavy Rain is playing on: character, dialogue, story etc etc). Heavy Rain hasn't impressed me at all on those grounds so far (sure I haven't played it but trailers are a good indication of this kind of thing after all)

BTW if it turns out ethan mars is the killer and he's been going on a murderous rampage every time he blacks out: david cage you have failed as a human being.
