Kamiya was right about what? That Inafune was a businessman? That tweet wasn't a condemnation of the man.
God, this whole thing is dumb. They worked at the same company for years. There's no bad blood between them but people are inventing this narrative.
I think people are using it somewhat comically, because it's so blunt, and on the face of it it's just mic-drop devastating.
Kamiya clarified that he was describing Inafune, not insulting him, and said that he respects Inafune as a businessman. But I think there is
some bad blood between them. Just a little smoke (but where there's smoke, there's fire). Not all co-workers always get along.
I remember reading once (although nobody else seems to remember it, and I can't find any record of it) that Inafune took a mild shot at Shinji Mikami when he was having his Resident Evil 4 troubles, saying that Mikami brought it upon himself by making selfish artistic decisions instead of good business decisions. Hideki Kamiya was among those who choked under Capcom's business decisions, and was forced to retreat to Clover Studios, and when even that wasn't enough, he was forced to quit Capcom and help form Platinum.
Inafune was a better businessman than these other artists, but eventually even he had to quit Capcom. And so when Kamiya was asked what he thought of Inafune's games, he said that Inafune is a businessman, not a creator. That's what he thinks
of Inafune's games. That Inafune is a businessman. There's maybe two ways to take that, either that Inafune's games are corporate product, not art, or "What games? Inafune doesn't make games."
And when interviewed about it, Inafune said that he doesn't let insults get to him, which means that at least Inafune took it as an insult. And Inafune said that he's not ashamed to be a businessman, because a good creator needs to be both creator and businessman to get anywhere in this business. Which could be taken as a subtle shot at Kamiya and Clover. And Kamiya didn't say Inafune was both a creator and a businessman, he said he was a businessman,
not a creator. When Kamiya sees Inafune, he doesn't see any artist, he just sees a suit and tie.
But this division or rivalry or whatever doesn't mean that Kamiya and Inafune hate each other or that they can't get along or anything like that. Someone asked Kamiya early on what he thought of Mighty no 9, and Kamiya said it was an insult to Capcom, because it was a blatant copy of Megaman. Someone suggested that Bayonetta was a blatant copy of Devil May Cry, and Kamiya responded with a smiley face. Means that Kamiya's willing to make headlines by saying harsh things about Inafune, but without directly saying it, Bayonetta was Kamiya's "Fuck you" to Capcom, and what he thinks (or thought) of Mighty no 9 is that it's Inafune's "Fuck you" to Capcom, and that's something they both have in common.
