konami can't die yet. they have to redeem themselves with a new suikoden, castlevania and gradius, snatcher and policenauts.

they still have some sane people left that can make good decisions, as seen at hard corps: uprising.

some insane people kept it from actually being called 'contra,' though.

Didn't Hudson develop Pokemon Trading Card game? My daughter is playing that right now on her SP, I might have to replay it again now as well. Sad to see the end of an era.

It's okay guys, we have six more Metal Gear Solid games coming out and the next Castlevania will be a third-person squad-based cover shooter.

The Golden Age of video games is awesome!

As opposed to how many Bomberman games? Not saying this isn't sad in a way but Hudson milked games just as much as Konami did/does.

I still don't understand the purpose of Konami fully acquiring Hudson only to shut them down.

Seriously...I was hoping the Bomberman adventure 3DS game would have been ressurected at least. Whats going to happen to all the franchise titles? At least get together for more additions to Konami's Rebirth series with Bonk, Zonk, and Adventure Island. Was still holding out hope for another "of Thunder" game after seeing Star Soldier come back.

About Contra, whats going on with the new non-download title entry? We just saw a teaser logo and that was that. Also Gradius VI on PS3.

Bomberman, Bonk, Star Soldier, Bloody Roar, Adventure Island...I'll miss you all. :(

ATTN: NINTENDO
PLEASE ACQUIRE SOME OF THESE FRANCHISES

Not saying Hudson hadn't milk Bomberman but there is a reason for the konami logo in the upper left of that cover.
Also there is a reason why Kudo bros and Bomberman creator left the company after the stock acquisition by Konami ( Act Zero was created after that ).

Because as a studio they are worth very little (and require upkeep) but as IP holders they have some value? And because they probably stayed alive by dealing with Konami in a way that forced them to take Hudson and not just sell their IPs.

It's a shame for those who lost their jobs but hudson has been irrelevant for years now and their output forgettable and easily replaceable. This industry has long become ruthless and being replaceable is a death sentence. I don't really have much sympathy for these guys. They've failed to improve and keep relevancy on their key IPs. These days, that's all a company is...for what that's worth.

Konami is actively killing their IPs though.
They killed the Bomberman 3DS game and they discontinued the Momotaro Dentetsu franchise

They haven't done anything else with the IPs either.

Don't forget their own IPs which they own, they havn't done much with them of late either.

Do you guys really think a more positive outcome would be for Hudson to stay a separate company and toil in irrelevancy forever until we're all dead?

I don't think it's that. It's just that it would be SO easy for them to treat Hudson as well as Square-Enix treats Taito. Some dignity might be drawn from old developers running out their creations and new staff experimenting with known properties.

This was kind of the inevitable end that was coming and its a damn shame it is what it is. But this same company walked Goemon to the forest so I don't know at all. But I really hope someone goes and saves these wonderful works for preservation because they deserve that much.

Really sad all around. Hudson deserved better.

This is a great example. I was so worried when SE originally bought Taito, but it's really turned out great on both sides. It's a great model for how future buyouts should be handled.

Step 1: Acquire total control over Hudson Soft
Step 2: Completely change the studios' course
Step 3: Close studios, drive out talent
Step 4: ?????
Step 5: I have no idea what I'm doing

Why did they bother buying them, then?

Does this mean that all the PCEngine titles on PSN will be gone?

Fuck you Konami, you're the worst publisher in Japan this generation.
Aw, they'd better not take that stuff off.

Fully agreed with your second statement, though. Konami has really sucked this generation, almost like a non-entity at this point outside of Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania and PES. Eh, I guess I'll harbour some rough feelings towards Konami regardless of what they do.

Is it fair to say that Konami is just milking its exercise/fitness and casino gambling business and that's all they are focusing on in Japan?

Hudson died when Kudo brothers, company founders, left after Konami acquired controlling stake.

I spoke with someone from Hudson at TGS 2010, she was in line playing some sort of ds game...total gamer girl...shame to see them just get jerked around...Japanese companies are too corrupt and top heavy. The staff actually doing things needs to fight to gain control or quit and figure out the indie thing...major respect for Yuji Naka right now

:( thank you for the great memories. Enjoyed so many games from my younger years from them.

Nd Cube ftw now.

Wish Nintendo would pick up Bomberman and Adventure Island etc.

Wow, this is just as shocking as THQ closing.

Hudson has some GREAT games over the years. Bomberman, Adventure Island, Adventure Island IV, Milon's Secret Castle, Princess Tomato In Salad Kingdom, heck even Neutopia I & II were great.

I didn't like Lost In Shadow that much (I found it too boring and
having to collect pieces of stained glass was not necessary
) and haven't played the Marble Mania games yet.

I sorta wished Far East Of Eden/Tengai Makyo found its way to the US though.....same with the Momotaro Dentetsu games.

Maybe like paintings rocket up in price after an artist dies, the same will happen for TG16 / PCE stuff that pulls at Hudson heart strings... Surprisingly easy to get your hands on most of the games here in Tokyo but it won't last forever (the problem is most Japanese throw old things away, so tons of games have been tossed out in the garbage).

it seems i'll never get to see the next bomberman game that is similar to bomberman 64. it's style of multiplayer is a whole lot better than the classical kind...and now it won't come back.

Kind of doubt the games will be delisted.

Konami canceled the majority of Hudson's production slate the moment they announced intent to purcahse the entire company.

Hudson tried doing the indie thing, but couldn't support themselves going forward, and needed the money that going public brought.

Since it's established that Konami is abosrbing Hudson into itself, would they actually bother to change the IP ownership rights to them, or will they go Free Domain or something? By canning Hudson's 3DS line-up sans Deca Sporta, Sudoku, and Tetris, why would they keep Bomberman and company?

I guess the way to check is by going through the Japanese trademark database? People have before in the Media Create threads.

I checked the back of the Sudoku Puzzle 3DS box today (should be the most recent Hudson game) and indeed Hudson still is listed as the character copyright holder.

These are the only options:

1. Bomberman and company are scott free; Konami doesn't own them and Hudson obviously doesn't if they're wiped from existance by name and identity.

2. Konami did obtain the rights.

How easily could Nintendo grab them (or just Bomberman at least) if 1 is true. And how much would they be worth in money if it was 2? I don't know how the IP purchasing business works. Or what happens if no owner is tied to a franchise.

Take Cel Damage for example; that was created by Pseudo Interactive (FUCK AWESOME game dammit), and they kept all the rights and were underway with a (bad looking...) sequel.

They went under in 2006 with nothing said about the IP, so from what I would assume, it's free-floating in IP space unless maybe the creator at Pseudo took the IP with him/her during the shut down.

Could an expert clear this up for me please?

Again, the English box art features a prominent "Published by Konami" tag. It's very rare for a company to buy another one out and not inherit their IPs.

Has Hudson really made anything good recently? Can't even think of any recent Hudson games besides Bomberman Act Zero and Mario Party 8.

That's just in NA (and Europe?), Hudson still self-published in Japan briefly I think, I'll double check the boxes.

Edit: Yeah, both Deca Sporta and the Puzzle game don't mention Konami at all. And the latter came out in Japan in June.
