IGN: Retro Studios Working on Donkey Kong Revival

Will Nintendo fans go ape over Retro's new game?
Don't read too much into my tweet. I just figured people might go bananas over Retro's next game. ;)
Holy shit :lol
Either Retro loves messing hard with our heads or this is some evidence. Ah what the hell I'm hyped

If this is true, I am happy to see Nintendo finally put Donkey Kong back into its front line franchise along with Zelda, Mario and Metroid.

The series has fell into the second/third-tier since SNES day I think. Same thing for Star Fox, Kirby, F-Zero (though Kirby Canvas Curse and F-Zero GX were amazing and some of my favorites ever, they sadly didn't have much impact in term of sale).

As awesome as this sounds though, I still have to say that I would have rather seen Retro's take on Starfox instead.

Also: funny how people were excited about a Retro Zelda, but not a Retro DK. Hard to see how one is more suited to Retro than the other in terms of gameplay.

Oh but wait, Zelda has swords and dramatic music so it's more of a mature "western" game than one featuring a tie-wearing ape. Carry on, then.
I thought Retro Zelda was also a terrible idea.

Retro didn't tweet that, Peer from IGN did. Retro doesn't have a twitter account.

Music should be good.
The music for the Prime games was handled by Nintendo Co. Limited, though... meaning this game will probably have good music, but not because it's Retro, just because it's a Nintendo-published game (but on DK they may just default to the usual cheesy style which was not all that spectacular).

Donkey Kong's Bad Fur Day.... do it Retro. :lol

But seriously even if its not DK, it sounds like Retro is at E3 showing something off, so thats good news.

Yeah!!! at Last. I did like Dk64 at all.
Also I know I loved all the Dkc games, but I hate that the only real great Donkey Kong game is DKC 'cause none of the other 2 had DK as the "hero". Just saying.

That's a really silly reason not to count the other ones as DK games.

I read somewhere that, David Wise, the original composer for DKC is a freelancer now. So obviously Nintendo's having him compose the soundtrack. Obviously.

No I count them it's just that I remember as a kid being bummed out because I wanted to play as Donkey Kong and in every other game he was not playable. I still like DCK 2 better anyways.

Yeah, he resigned from Rare last year.

And this is obviously the reason why! :o :p

But I just declared them dead!

Seriously though, I'd definitely buy it if true since it's fucking Donkey Kong! But since its IGN(who I don't trust), we'll just have to wait and see. Weird combination though.

Strange pairing but I can't help but be hyped for it. A new DK is long overdue. I would feel more comfortable with EAD Tokyo doing another DK game though. Then again, if anyone knows a thing or two about revivals, it's Retro.

If true, I love how Nintendo's been hinting at it.

Make it happen, Retro.

No it's just I don't like the DK IP. Never really a fan of jungle monkey/ape mischief in general. It has nothing to do with being "mature".

Weird, certainly didn't think of Retro would do something like this. Kinda disappointing for me because I loved Metroid Prime 3 and really enjoyed Metroid Prime 1 so I was hoping to be hyped up for Retro's next big game. I just hate Dk though, but I hope it does well, Prime 2 and 3 (not to mention the Tri.) should of sould way more then they did.

DKC 2 is more about pirates than jungles.

(with the jungle environment... maybe city too)

New IP or not, I just hope they do something ambitious. Please do go New Super Mario Bros. Wii route. As good as that was, it would still be a waste of talents.

Retro? Say no more.

For those clamoring for a new IP, how about waiting to see what Retro's cooked up. They did great last time at getting the essentials of a classic series while taking it in a new and exciting direction.

Hmmm I dont think this makes much sense.

EAD Tokyo made themselves with the awesome DKJB and then went onto SMG greatness.

I'd rather see Retro doing the Goleneye remake :D

Zelda has a lot more obvious similarities with Metroid. I've not been a big proponent, but it's easy enough to see how they could take Zelda and take it in a bit more of a Prime direction. But Donkey Kong? When I saw this thread title I actually said "...Why?" It doesn't seem an obvious fit, but I guess we'll see.
