Convenience, one you have to make the effort to drive there, the other can be read when you turn on the computer. Option of purchase, in a bookstore you can buy a manga if you really like it. A scanlation site does not link you to websites to purchase a legal version to support the publishers.

I'd say he's causing more damage. The book he's handling can become damaged and disfigured. This affects that particular unit from selling at all or if it is bought by someone it effects them since the quality is lower. Downloading does none of this harm.

We've all seen it ourselves, the magazine that is supposed to be in plastic wrap at the magazine rack and is instead broken open and messed up looking.

But he should realize that with the textbook controversies, most of them deal with books taught to a very very small percentage of Japanese students. It's not even on the same level of potential damage that the Texas controversies would have had here.

Articles on foreign countries are usually bad. I would, for example, almost never trust an article in the US about Russia or Iran or other potential enemy.
