Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning |OT| An Enemy-Pounding Funfest

I learned the hard way with game saves, so I just use symbolic links to sync them with my dropbox folder. Not only do I quick save constantly, but if a save gets fucked up, or something bugs out, I can always retrieve an earlier version from my dropbox.

Or, you know, if Windows or my HDD shits the bed, it's backed up safe and sound.

Now, if you're playing on console, well... that's why I don't play much on console anymore.

Okay now I know why people are saying this game is so easy. I just respecced from staff/daggers to chakrams/faeblades and it's like night and day as a sorcery/finesse build. Kind of crazy how there is such a big difference.

I think it's time for an update on the pretty stuff :D Every set in the reckoning has been collected, the quest is over now. If anyone wants to see them all I'll drop the link to the gallery, enjoy ;) No DLC sets, cause I can't buy them since I don't have room in my inventory, will get the DLC sets if the stash get's bigger with the new DLC.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/44176169@N07/sets/72157629067766160/

Also, here is a link to all the unique weapons I've found so far, I'm still hunting the rest, not many left but I have to keep myself busy somehow with the game till DLC :D

http://www.flickr.com/photos/44176169@N07/sets/72157629067638660/

I'll also try to complete as many Unique armor sets as possible at this point. I won't get them all, cause some of the pieces are gone forever (sold to the store and when came back most of the stuff was gone) but I'll see how many I can get.

Man, I really like the way enemies attack with spears - makes me wish you could use them yourself.

Personally, I want to get my hands on that wind spell the enemy mages use against me.

Also, whoever came up with the idea for an inventory limit in games needs a good talking to. I hate having to go to a shop after every quest. I'm starting to not even care about looting chests at this point because everything goes into junk and I spend more time sorting through what junk I want to keep for smithing/selling than actually completing quests.

Does anyone else have a problem with using space key when naming your crafted items?
For me it creates the item so I have to use the spaces from the 'default' name.

Haha, just glitched death...

Downed a potion after I died somehow. So had health but was still considered dead, it decided to autosave just then.

Now I loaded that save and I'm laying dead on the ground and my health has regenerated to full. Can't do anything other than rotate the camera (can't even pause the game).

I bet that's what happened to Fugues's failed experiments. Eternity in a catatonic state.

Will drop pants for Sony.
Helius' torso is impossible to get? Time to sell the ones in the set I have managed to find then.

To clarify both bugs:

1 - When I said Reckoning stopped working, I mean the ability to hit the button to increase the percentage of experience. It shows the button but doesnt recognize the input.

2 - Summon Faer Gorta summons the Faer Gorta but he comes out hostile towards me and attacks me instead of the enemy. My attacks damage the Faer Gorta. I respecced so that I didnt have him anymore, and then specced it again and the problem still existed. I went back to old saves and the problem continued there (same applies to the Reckoning issue).

I've heard of numerous other people with the Reckoning issue, but I havent seen anyone here with the Faer Gorta issue.

Abit late with this reply, (was bannedlol) but I had that bug, where you cant increase exp during reckoning. but it always went away after one.

Now for something unrelated.
I platinum'd this game in 63 hours. I had a blast through most of it, so pretty satisfied there. Will buy sequel day one. For future though, dont make up crazy numbers like 200 hours to do everything, then have a community rep weigh in with "oh, but didnt you know? that includes getting every set!" that shit right there turns me off.

All in all, satisfied with my experience, pretty much what most said in here. Wish BS'ing wasnt so broken, but could customise abit better. Also, why cant a master BS'er have like 90% to salvage multiple items? Ditto to alchemy, if i maxxed it out, I should be able to harvest reagents 100% of the time.

I wanted to weigh in with this sooner, but couldnt.
Bottom line " Loved the game a lot, disappointed with armor. Satisfied with game length, would have zero complaints if not for the "Zomg game takes 200 hours speedrunning" BS
pre release.

EDIT:
Wish I had a better answer, but I don't, here's the official response from our lead.

I just double-checked the loot tables and I'm sorry to report that you're absolutely right. warrior_set06_torso (the Helius chestpiece) is missing from the loot table for some reason, so it CAN'T drop. :-( I looked through the Dependency Viewer and it looks like that piece isn't hand-placed in the game anywhere either, which means this is an outright content bug.

I'll put it in DevTrack. Thanks, Curt!

Hmm, even more curious. Your CM said that those speed runs included getting every set. o_O

Besides the manual experience nerfing (waaaaaaay too much effort) this looks really promising. Hope no one minds if I copy/paste the brief overview because I think this is too good to miss:

youngneil1 said:
The mod does the following (it will get more features as I learn; you can turn off or separately manually adjust all of these values to your liking as described further below):
1. Doubles the damage the heroes receives

2. Halves the damage the hero does

3. Introduces soft cap for very high player damage (e.g. due to multiplier stacking); stealth attacks are not affected

4. Implements extra damage mechanism against heroes with extremely high hp (again counterbalancing multiplier stacking)

5. Utilizes minimum damge per hit, regardless of armor/resistances, so the hero remains somewhat vulnerable despite over the top armor/resistance values (even groups of grey mobs can be a little dangerous now)

6. Doubles the mana cost of the hero's spells and abilities

7. Reduces the sell value of items as well as the gold found to one third of vanilla

8. Increases a paramter called "Attack Weight" that allwos more multiple attackers and stronger simultaneous special attacks at the same time (changed from 14 to 100)

9. Now featuring Scaling Shift in hero hp and damage received by hero: both are five times increased - this way all healing and regeneration is only at 20% effectiveness

10. Via Cheat Engine tool (see below) I also suggest to set the game speed at 115% - still immersive and makes combat more interesting, cause you need to be more on your toes

11. [WIP] Allows to manually (requires some adjustment and continous manual work) reduce your experience points gain, slowing down char development: I recommend a slow down of 50%, i.e. shortly before level up to manually reduce the xp back to the floor of 0points for that level (of course only once per level), explained in detail in the attached document of Adjusting EXP

Attack weight and game speed adjustments look really interesting in addition to the damage done nerf and damage received buff. I may try this next time I play and see how nasty Klurikon can get (works with your existing saves!).

So I got a weird little bug, in one of the pile of rocks in Adessa I got a pendant of warmth, this aparently triggered the shadowfall question from the magic faction out of sequence so when I went to the cave there was nothing to do.

Well nothing I do is triggering this mage to appear so I don't know what to do.

I think I have a bug in a quest, from memory it called something like ' The Seal and the Blades' I go to talk to the NPC and can't get what I need out of her. Can't pick-pocket her either and there are no other dialogue options, any ideas?

Are there any other quests that the person expects to complete, cause I had it happen where two quests required me to talk to the same person and I had to finish one before able to get a dialog for the other one

Hahaha. The key for the Almain house right?

The conversation that triggers it does not appear on the top; it is in fact at the bottom of the dialogue box. "Key for Almain House" or something like that. Select it for the quest.

What are people's thoughts on questing late game? I am 52hrs in and now in Rathir and every arse on every street wants me to do the most shameful tasks for useless gold which wastes all my time. I don't even listen to the stories these brainless NPCs spout any longer.

I really don't get anything out of these quests unless you get to goto a new dungeon and get to unlock chests.

Have people been put off from questing late game to focus on the Main + Faction Quests instead?

I am not near the end of the game, but my friend (roommate) is, and he is thinking similar to you, but it isn’t necessarily because he is tiring of the dialogue/story. He is really only paying attention the main/faction quest lines just because he is concerned he is going to max his level before even hitting the very last area.

I also think at first he wanted to raise at least some levels during the upcoming DLC pack, but is resigned now that isn’t going to happen.

I do side quests, but not tasks.

Even the side quests are mind-numbing, though. Basically I am chalking it all up to quest fatigue and feeling a psychological requirement to do them all for fear of missing an item or event that is important.

The only rewards in the end for myself personal up to this point is the knowledge that I have done it all and haven't missed anything (That I am aware of).

Personally, I am going straight into just doing the Main/Faction quests from here on out. NPCs can take out their own garbage now.

I'm about 9 hours in and I'm really loving it. A lot of reviews, users included, were pretty lukewarm so I wasn't expecting much, but damn, the graphics are really pretty on PC, the writing is good - better than most games, the game is clearly huge and the combat is ridiculously fun for a RPG.

I think the world is beautiful, the 5% of the map I've explored so far has had plenty of beautiful locales, and it's great to have a more light-hearted, cartoony/animation version of Skyrim to have fun with.

And for a game this size, the voice acting is really consistently good - better than Skyrim.

I also haven't had a single bug or anything so far that's taken me out of the game. It's just very smooth and polished in every aspect.

I just want to say the "reward" for doing Till's Secret Book Collection quest is the worst thing ever of all time

I regretted doing that too. I wish someone had warned me ahead of time not to embark on that idiotic quest. The reward for it should have been a skill enhancement or something equivalent. Not cash equivalent to what I could have gotten killing one or two higher end mobs.

Oh wow, I just failed a quest for the first time in 90 or so hours, it was the 'Witch Knight of Ghennig' one - the damn NPC I was with got gang-raped by a bunch of Jottun before I even got to face the knight. It would be nice if NPCs scaled to your level, as the jottun were doing little to impact my health, yet suddenly the NPC just died. I just went a killed the witch knight on my own, experience points be damned, I'm not reloading just to baby-sit an NPC.

Yup I just got past the Mel Senshir part of the main quest and the fatigue is kicking in. Can't be bothered to even see what the sidequests are about anymore, which is kind of a shame.

Yeah that quest, I choose that dialogue and the only option I have is 'I have no proof'.

When I finished the quest, I half thought of coming here and telling people to lower expectations. I thought better of it and found enjoyment in responses like this.

I'm sorry that I'm a terrible person.

I honestly think that some of the people in this thread are not playing the same game as me, or at least not playing the same content within the game that I am. All of these complaints about the side quests are ridiculous. This game has the best side quests of any RPG ever. For instance, the Widow/Castle Yolvan quest at Canneroc? That is a side quest. And it took me at least several hours of gameplay to complete with multiple stages, locales, its own mini-story, and a dungeon. Or The Fisherman's Bride quest in Ettinmere, which was surprising and hilarious at the same time. As for the Til's Book Collection quest that people are whining about right above me -- the reward is the books themselves. Have you read them? Would you have collected them otherwise?

Fully agree mate, I love the side quests in Reckoning and that's why I hunted them all down (at least I think, found 210). I really don't have any major complains about the game, really. Even the difficulty is OK, it might not be difficult but it really doesn't have to be, I enjoy it for what it was.

I will be getting sequel for sure and if the Copernicus will be available on the consoles I'll get it as well, if not, well then I'm gonna have to get a better PC for it ;)

I'm about to start a new game, this time I'll stick with male character and will go pure might build probably, will get everything again, including all the sets (I want to see them on male character now). I just hope the stash will get bigger with the new DLC, so I don't have to sell anything anymore.

Whaaaat?! Screw that noise. My inventory is clogged with crappy harlequins until I complete that quest - for that? Money became meaningless before I even left Dalentarth. . .

I'm assuming those 8 books I have found are taking up slots, and it seems I can't sell/destroy mission items. If not, those slots are way more valuable to me than a gold reward.

Stupid Til and his stupid porn! I am now limiting myself to faction and main quest.

The books thing and a few others are listed as tasks and not quests, which is why I ignore them, I believe you can stash the books in your house stash

Yolvan took me like 15 mins for the entire chain, no joke. Town->castle->cave. Pretty sure I oneshot the Widow with a backstab. The fisherman in Ettinmere is like 2 minutes..kill some wolves, walk 5 seconds south, kill something else, the end. Oh, get a ring from another ogre. Alright. Already posted earlier in the thread that I have zero interest in reading pointless filler lore in books so the idea that the grand world traveling book collection quest ends in nothing but meaningless currency sucks (though I knew that already from Jeff complaining about it on the bombcast). I'm not saying you can't enjoy these quests..but I wouldn't go so far as to call them high quality.

The best side quest I've experienced so far is the second Traveler's guild one to steal Buru's Boots from the fallen Fae. The setup and atmosphere in the cave is really awesome, except of course I completely decimated him with my bow before he could even finish his scripted dialogue to attack me.

Yeah, it's hard to really get absorbed in the quests when you unleash an endless torrent of damage on anything that attacks you. Unfortunately, if I didn't do them I'd miss out on a ton of persuasion and dispel chances that I need for the trophies. Once I have those trophies out of the way though, I'll probably not bother with sidequests. In my opinion the main quests plus faction quests are plenty. No reason to throw in fetch quests for the town bartender.

The resolution of the main story was... quite disappointing, really. Gadflow, Alyn Shir... even the "real background story" of the main character... They were all rather disappointing.

Still, I wouldn't throw 68 hours of my life to a game if I didn't enjoy it, so kudos for that.

Every once in a while maybe developers should use GAF members as their focus/testing group, hahahah.

First of all, I'm curious where that data comes from. My understanding is that typically game developers use trophy/achievement information to determine how many people are playing easy vs hard, good vs evil, whatever. And since the game difficulty can be changed at any time, and presumably the trophy is based on the lowest difficulty you ever played on, it's conceivable that a lot of those people played the game on normal but swapped to easy for one or two fights (I can certainly think of a few that were hard enough to tempt people).

But more importantly, I don't think anyone in this thread wants Easy mode to be harder. We're fine with letting people play at the difficulty they want. But I want to play on a Hard mode that's actually hard. Reckoning gives a lot of great tools to the player. The craft skills in particular give us a lot of power. But when using that power even a little makes the game trivial.... it's just not satisfying.

Sure, we're not the majority. We're the enthusiasts. And while appealing to the lowest common denominator can be a great business model, we want more.

sneaky77

Member
yeah I am enjoying hard the way it is, but I don't see any issues in giving people that want it a harder mode, but if its something a very small percentage will use, is understandably that it would not be a huge priority to time sink balancing that

Where does this standup in the pantheon of modern (last few years) WRPGs?

Up toward the top with the Witcher 2, DA:O, Risen, Drakensang, Skyrim, New Vegas or Divinity 2?

Or somewhere in between like Two Worlds or Gothic 3 or Arcania?

Or at the bottom?

Dead

well not really...yet

Its closest in style to Divinity 2 I think, and I would say that KoA is better than that game, which I really liked.

I kind of wondered about that. I got a Divinity vibe from it. Divinity was a ton of fun but nothing really revolutionary so I was only able to get halfway through. I'll have to try out KoA after ME3.

Has anyone here had trouble starting the game recently? I put in a ticket but I am curious if anyone else is unable to start the game. I launch it through steam and after the little ogre window, it keeps telling me it stopped working.

XBOX - RECORD ME LOVING DOWN MY WOMAN GOOD
Okay, I'm at over 40 hours and JUST left Dalentarth. Holy crap, at this rate it will take me over 200 hours to beat the game.

I think eventually I'll tire and just focus on the main story. I've started messing around in Detyre, and due to the way I game I really want to see each area of every Kingdom in the game, so it's slow going. Side quests keep me distracted.

One thing I'm starting to dislike is my armor. My armor seems to be just palate changes, and since I'm both a Might and Magic user, my armor is big plate looking metal with huge shoulder guards. I look like a space marine. I wouldn't mind the big armor if there was some more variety, but so far I've been locked into similar looking armor for the past 20 hours.

I'm starting to think I'll just switch from my heavy armor to robes since I'm a level 4 Might/Magic hybrid, whatever that is called. Robes have some nice stats, but I'm so used to wearing leggings that just going with a robe is against my style. :)

Anyway, I'm still having fun despite this not being my idea of a true open world game, or at least it's not a sandbox type of game like Skyrim. Still, it's kept me hooked for over 40 hours, so I've gotten my money's worth. And I'm sure I'll keep going until I'm near 100 hours or more, since I haven't felt any true boredom set in yet.

I do like the look of Detyre vs. Dalentarth, but that could be because I was stuck in that kingdom for so long. The red rock is satisfying to my eyes after all the green.

I clocked in 83 hours at the finish. Played on normal and only skipped a couple of side quests.
I tried to use armor from sets because it just looks so much cooler than the crafted stuff, but towards the end I had to switch back to get my health regen boost.
Overall I enjoyed the game a lot. I did have to take a break towards the end when I got kinda burned out.
On a side note I went back to Skyrim (181 hours to finish) and now I'm getting fus roh dah'd to death. Got killed 10 times on the way to the boss by getting knocked off cliffs...
