Kotaku: Silent Hills officially cancelled

So

No one really cares about DDR anymore
Konami fucked up Castlevania and people didn't even really buy the new one
Kojima is gone
Silent Hill is on ice
All of their other games have been MIA for years
Who the FUCK knows why they bought Hudson in the first place

What is there left for Konami to survive on?

It's hard to miss the fact that they are trending on twitter worldwide, and that every major site with a story on this is jampacked with thousands of negative comments. They may not care about NeoGaf, but even a braindead company should release that trending with worldwide rage on twitter is not a good thing.

I can see this having a damage on a business. But honestly, as long as their fitness business is ging strong, I doubt that will change. In fact them getting out of Exchange market makes me thinks that they are focusing on Japan, and I doubt anyone who is registered to their fitness program can actually be persuaded to cancel his/her membership just because they doubled-down on their gaming initiative.

Not video games. That's for sure.

They are getting out of gaming anyway. Public Opinions from gamers have no effect one them. In fact, they can boast to their shareholders by saying that they went all out just to focus on more profitable business.
As long as they are truly out, you're right, but they're doing real damage here. I don't see why they would burn bridges in this way. If they were just pissing off fans, that's one thing, but they seem to be treating staff very poorly. It seems odd to me.

Meanwhile at Konami HQ:

Just, seriously. What the fuck happened here?!

well Konami could close their videogames branch and be perfectly fine still so quite a bit

This was one of those projects that could stretch out to interest people not-interested in horror, or even possibly gaming.

What could Kojima have *possibly* done that Konami is willing to shoot themselves in the foot and then go after the foot with an axe?

I mean, if Konami doesn't have Silent Hills and Metal Gear, why do I even care about them anymore?

at first i thought he fucked the CEOs wife
but now it seems he might just hate Kojima for whatever reason

Eh. EA and Ubisoft even got awards for being hated, and yet they're still making a good bit of money. In Konami's case, they're eschewing console development for F2P and Casino games, where they're seeking an entirely new audience. Honestly, I doubt they really care all too much if the market they're planning on abandoning is livid with them. I hate to admit it, but it makes sense from a business perspective, anyway.

I just hope they realize that there's more value in selling their IP's because of this worldwide vitroil instead of just saving them as names to slap on a pachinko machine.

The hell are they doing holding onto a truck-ton of IPs that are just languishing then?

From a business perspective wouldn't it make sense to at least sell/auction of all of those save your precious few AA/AAA IPs that might have a chance to make any real money again in the future?

Health Clubs.
Maybe if it played more like CoD you'd like it huh
Calling PT a walking sim maybe a bit, well completely off but, G clearly just doesn't care for Silent Hill and that's okay. Using the tired "lol go play CoD u dudebro" is petty.

I haven't been paying attention to gaming recently. Why are they doing this again?

They are focussing on their other businesses and scaling down console gaming. They've not really got much on consoles that attracts people any more. They have MGS which is huge but after Kojima is gone I doubt they'll make another and if they do it won't sell as much because Kojima isn't attached and a lot of fans will be cautious around the franchise post Kojima. Silent Hills was being co-directed by Kojima and with him gone they've shut it down because it's a AAA survival horror game on next gen platforms and if they've lot one of the big draws (Kojima) then I doubt they are willing to take the risk. They probably only went through with it due to the success of PT.

They have their sport titles but other than that not much int he console space. They have Castlevania but the last one wasn't so hot, they've got the Hudson IPs but not done a thing with them and I can't remember what else which is why they aren't doing anything with any other stuff they own.

I just hope if they do leave the console space they off load their IPs rather than turn them into shitty mobile cash grabs or pachinko machines or excercise machines or whatever they are doing that gets them more money than games.

That point is what I don't understand. I can see the CEO actually not giving a damn about the fans, since he isn't that well versed in the gaming communities, but why the hell would you treat your people so badly which could would hurt your business elsewhere?

Yeah, the whole thing is a clusterfuck!

Nope.

From business stand point, its better to hold on to any IP however useless it is, just because of probable future potential. Hence you have Disney not actually wanting to sell of Lucas Arts, Point and Click IPs

They captured lightning in a bottle and threw it at the wall. It always hurts to hear about a cancelled game that had so much potential. I know this has been said in this thread before, but MGSV will be my last konami purchase.

I will also never forgive them for killing HusdonSoft and Bomberman. Here's to hoping that Konami doesn't survive this gen.

Yeah, this is bullshit.
PT is a walking sim though. It's a horror game based around walking down a hallway a dozen times while clicking on random shit. The puzzle aspect is practically meaningless when the final puzzle is such ridiculous bullshit.

People seriously calling it "the best horror game of recent times" baffle me.

But why.

Everyone loved PT.

EVERYONE.

It was heralded as a great return for Silent Hill and horror in general.

WHY

IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE

As much as I wanted this, I can't help but feel it's a mercy killing at this point. There's no way what would come out the other end would be unaffected by ... well, this.
