Kotaku: Silent Hills officially cancelled

Now Konami can focus on their other awesome, fan-loving IPs like:

Bloody Roar.

..and, uh..Castlevania. Dance Dance Re--

Oh wait, all of these are shelved too.

All i can picture now is Metal Gear Pachinko or Silent Hill Slots.

Oh wow, bustin' out the "Is To As."

Two masters of their craft with nothing to show for it at the end of the day.

Here's hoping Kojima gets in with a smaller horror game developer, because from that film festival this weekend it sure sounded like del Toro was like, "yeah, I'm 50 probably shouldn't bother with video games going forward if they're gonna keep panning out like this."

Silent Hill has been trash (mostly) since the PS2 era so its no surprise this is happening. unfortunate but that demo/announcement always seemed dubious, like a very rough idea.

This is a horrible year, two of my favourite series died this year.

So just to get a little bit of positivity going, who wants Kojima to join Square and work on Final Fantasy XVI?

Anyone?

Anyone?

No, I still want Silent Hills.

Honestly, the only place Kojima could do what he wants to do now is in the west.

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft found a way of tying him up in a contract.

Think of how many IPs Konami is going to kill.

Gradius. Parodius. Snatcher. Metal Gear. Castlevania. Contra. Suikoden. Dance Dance Revolution. Bemani. Super Star Soldier. Bonk. Bomberman. Adventure Island. Rocket Knight

Konami was once of my favorite companies ever. Sega. Nintendo. Capcom. Konami. The big 4. The very best of the best. This is so heartbreaking :(

Do those IPs mean anything to anyone under 25?

And I say that as someone who played the hell out of their NES games in the '80s.

As I pointed out earlier, DDR is still actively developed in arcades, though it is only possible to operate the newest versions in Japan, Korea, and a select few other Asian territories.

Did Kojima murder a bunch of kittens or something? Still no idea why Konami let him go. It's almost as if they don't want to make money ......................anyone any idea's?

They will always be one of my favorite developers of all time just for Metal Gear Solid, Suikoden 2, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Silent Hill 2-3 and Zone of the Enders 2, so they are not that terrible. A terrible video game company didn't create games like that.

Metal Gear, DDR, Bemani, Suikoden, and Snatcher probably do.

DDR and Bemani? The rhythm game fad has passed. At least in the west.

Suikoden? The last one of those was almost 10 years ago.

Snatcher? The game is over 25 years old, and is only known by true gaming enthusiasts. It's good source material for a new project, but has almost zero mainstream name recognition.

Metal Gear is the only one of those that matters, simply because Kojima has been actively developing and hyping it over the years.

I'd say MGS, DDR, and maybe Bomberman (which had a very popular XBLA release early on in the 360's life) are the only franchises that are well known to younger gamers. Bemani is more of a Japanese thing, Suikoden was never really popular (and the most popular game in the series is about 15 years old although at least it got a recent rerelease), and Snatcher was niche even when it was new.

The problem you're going to get in this thread is nostalgic gamers with a lack of perspective.

"Oldies? But you've got all the top bands in here."

Nah seriously, WTF is going on.
First David Hayter ( which was handled in a similar fashion ) Then Kojima and his team and now Silent hills is canned?
It's that bad it's actually hard to believe, it sounds like complete BS.
but sadly it's all true.

Castlevania would require a complete reinvention to remain any sort of relevant in this day and age. It's something people who played games in the '80s and '90s have a hard time wrapping their heads around.
It really wouldn't be that hard.

Just go the indy style route and make a solid 2d game.

They already tried to rebuild it as a God Of War clone, and we've seen how that worked out.

Snatcher was highly touted dlc in the last metal gear game. If people know metal gear, they know snatcher.

"But japan" isnt an excuse, those games are still popular with an under 25 crowd. The guy didnt say "under 25 and living in utah."

I wonder what's the next large Japanese company to kill off traditional gaming for mobile. Sega? Capcom maybe?

Capcom isn't going anywhere as they're willing to get others to help them out to produce major titles and they're still doing them on their own, like Basara and Monster Hunter.

Bloodborne is really popular and it's got a lot of Castlevania DNA in it.

Do people still find Dracula as a villain menacing? Castlevania was back popular when Dracula was still scary during these monster movies. Although you are right, if Castlevania would go in the same route as Bloodborne, we would get a dark sinister Castlevania game.

You're right. But just like Capcom couldn't be arsed to make a new 2D MegaMan, I can't see Konami doing that.

Nintendo seems to be the only big Japanese dev to understand the value of old IP and how to treat it right.

Bloodborne is really popular and it's got a lot of Castlevania DNA in it.

Exactly. But Konami doesn't seem agile enough to try, and Bloodborne's already captured that market.

That's really reaching. An unlockable bonus mission in MGSV: The Paid Demo that was originally console-exclusive and has a few Snatcher references in it doesn't mean that Snatcher is a well known IP to anyone but longtime hardcore gamers.

Same goes for Ori and the Blind Forest. Its basically a Metroidvania game with a different skin over the top of it, yet it's been really well received.

A massive, AAA blockbuster wouldn't work for Castlevania now, but I could see a smaller team doing it justice on the smaller budget aimed at a more specific audience.

Who am I kidding though?

The original Dracula movie came out in 1931. By the time the first Castlevania came out, Dracula and the other universal monsters were already considered pretty cheesy.

This whole conversation is pretty dumb considering the shining example of relevant konami ips was virtually unknown in the west for the first 11 years of its existence. Exposure leads to relevancy.

"Originally console exclusive" is also just a cute way of saying "not console exclusive."

PT remains the best experience I've had on PS4. A damn shame its not continuing.

Stay tuned for future announcements?

I look forward to Book of Memories HD port by Hijinx Studios.
