Lesser known N64 games you loved back in the day

Pretty bad fighting game, but I was such a huge Beast Wars fan I still had a fun time with it.

Probably one of the worst games I've ever played, actually.

I remember one level of this game where you were in a mansion and it was some sort of party going on where you had to wait for someone to go to the bathroom then disguise yourself or something. Anyways, it was such a fun mission, and the piano music that was playing will always be engrained in my memory. I replayed that level so many times.

Ditto. MI was a terrible game in hindsight, but I LOVED it back then.

Also:
Battle Tanks
Majora's Mask if I can pull that card
Armorines to a small extent
Exite Bike 64
Duke Nukem:Zero Hour
Turok 3

Jet Force Gemini

Sarges Heroes

Turok Rage Wars

There's a few more I simply can't remember. Hopefully this thread will jog my memory.

Has anyone played a game called Fighter Destiny and by any chance loved it? I just loved the star system it had and I sued to play it back in the day with me family.

Still listen to this soundtrack weekly.

My N64 playing time was cut drastically once my mom got her hands on this :lol

Seeing this thread is pretty nostalgic. I remember reading about most of these games back in Nintendo Power. :O

So there's a DS Snowboard Kids game. Is this as much of an abomination as it looks from the box art?

As someone who's played this, I'll just say it's better to pretend this doesn't exist.

This thread was made for Beetle Adventure Racing. Seriously, that is the right answer.

Just to add something different, I enjoyed the Star Wars Episode 1 Racer game quite a bit. It might not have been lesser known, but it certainly didn't seem to catch on the way I'd hoped. I would love to see another one. The races were very fast and quite intense.

(EDIT) Nevermind. It appears Pod Racer was already mentioned. Damn you guys have good taste.

Was always bummed that this and Spiderman didn't come to Europe, but I guess it was at the very end of the N64's life and the system was never that popular here.
I had the oportunity to buy the Indy game for 10 U.S. used but complete and let it slip. Feel guilt for that to this day. The game is a show piece of the N64 graphics wise, and i think the emus have problems runing it because of all the low level code.

Yeah, especially WCW vs NWO Revenge. That game came out at the peak of the wrestling craze, it was well regarded as the best wrestling game ever at the time. It was a blockbuster game that has no part in this thread.

+1 vote for Fighter's Destiny. More fighters should use its point system. Making ring outs worth less than knock outs just makes sense.
Yeah, it's like guys in the thread are posting their favorite N64 that are not hughe stablished franchizes.

All these games were very popular and pretty much every N64 owner knew about them when they launched. They were big releases if not hugely successful in the long term.
Isn't preventing users to post stuff like Turok, WcW games or Star Wars pod racer. Stuff that went on to sale millions of units. Amusing to say the least.

Hybrid Heaven was one of the first games to show up about the system...it was shown years before release (Goldeneye was also shown really early). And I hyped it so much for years, and never played it when it came out.

Mission: Impossible was fantastic. The lowering yourself to the terminal was great. The mansion mission was awesome. And the opening mission was perfect, stealing the identity. There was a lot of good, but the gunplay was really bad, so it wasn't what it could have been. Still.

Did anyone ever do the code to play Turok 2 in Co-Op?

It was a sloppy, buggy mess that ran at literally 5-10 fps, but it was fun!

You know what hasn't been mentioned?

TheNewTetris.jpg

The Gold and Silver blocks were a major shift in how Tetris was played, and Neil D. Voss's soundtrack was absolutely fantastic.

Some of you guys are putting way too high of profile games on here! Zelda, Dukem Nukem, Tetris?

Anyway, the posters on the first page are full of win as they covered the one's that came to the top of my head:

Mischief Makers
Silicon Valley
Mystical Ninja Goemon
Winback
Hybrid Heaven
Harvest Moon 64!!! (Gets a lot of love of GAF which surpised me but I don't know a lot of people in person that have played it)

Only Turok codes i remember are

TUROK: NTHGTHDGDCRTDTRK

TUROK 2 Seeds of Evil: BEWAREOBLIVIONISATHAND

I'm doing this by memory so the first might not be 100% correct :p

edit: HOLY FUCKBALLS IT IS CORRECT haha
I'm actually scared of myself right now

Just got back from the used store and got Hybrid Heaven, Shadow Man and Glover.

If you like Shadow Man, track down the superior Dreamcast version someday.

Assuming you have a Dreamcast of course.

I hate that they made the chameleon look like an actual (cartoony) chameleon in the second game. I miss the weird, blue space alien thing from the original.
Hmm, I just looked at a video of the first one, and that's weird... I unfortunately never got to play CT1. The gameplay of the first one looks slightly different too...

Yeah, the first game is in a 3D world.

And I just learned that the Japanese version of Chameleon Twist 2 still stars the cool blue thing. They changed it for the US and PAL versions, which is incredibly lame.

Fuck ye Chameleon Twist! Didn't know they made a sequel.
+1 to Fighter's Destiny. Man with more polish, that fighting system could have been huge! It would be nice if a company tried to bring that back...
Deadly arts and Flying Dragon are my guilty pleasures. They are so bad, yet they still have a place in my heart!

Majora's Mask, Excite Bike 64, Duke Nukem, Turok 3, Jet Force Gemini were all high profile N64 games from, at the time, huge N64 developers. They don't belong in this thread.

Chameleon Twist and Glover

Both were such fresh ideas. Going back I would probably find camera and control issues, but I remember loving these games.

Glover also has some pretty cool music

Another I got enjoyment from:

Milo's Astro Lanes! I just remembered that one. Only bowling game I had for N64, and it was fun in multiplayer. Liked being able to control the ball and getting powerups.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet

Hmm...is there any relation to Snowboard Kids?

It's a different company, but it looks oddly similar...that's pretty much Slash, Linda, Jam, and Tommy in a more modern anime style. 0.o

Also, for the person who asked, I picked up the DS Version...it's a solid game, but it definitely doesn't hold up in part due to the removal of the unique art style and whimsicalness of the original 64 games.

I remember really liking Body Harvest at the time. It's a fun little precursor to the 3D GTA games. Fun to sort of see the evolution of that game/tech.

Just played some Hybrid Heaven and I must say I'm very impressed. I don't know why I was turned off of by this initially back when it first came out but I'm glad I picked it up today. Like most of these under-the-radar N64 games the controls do take some getting used to. Unlike games of today there is no tutorial that walks you through the controls. Thanks for the recommendation!

No surprise N64 library has somewhere around 300 games.
PS1 has 5-6 times that number.
Also N64 was a major force only in America ( and the type of software supprot reflect that ) so it had relatively few japanese quirky games that never cross the pond.
Actually, there are some quirky Japanese N64 games that we never got. It's just that for whatever reason almost none of them have ever reached any level of notability; aside from Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh (the first release in Treasure's 2d missile-explosion-centric shooting game) and Sin & Punishment: Successor to the Earth (Tsumi to Batsu: Hoshi no Keishousha, the great but short rail shooter), could most people even name one or two of the 80 or so Japan-exclusive N64 games?

Apart from the two great Treasure titles above most aren't anything of note, but some are interesting in some way, at least:

Nintendo 64 Import-Only Titles

First, Europe-only N64 game of note.

Taz Express
- A Taz 3d platformer.

Japan and Europe only

Air Boarder 64 - racing game

Rakuga Kids - 2d fighting game from Konami

The below are all Japan-only N64 games. This is probably most of the Japan-exclusive N64 games worth mentioning; most of the rest are stuff like casino, hanafuda, mahjong, shogi, sport games, etc. I imagine I've missed something, though.

Fushigi no Dungeon: Fuurai no Shiren 2 - Oni Shuurai! Shiren Jou! (Shiren the Wanderer 2) - the sequel to the super hard SNES Mysterious Dungeon dungeon crawler title, and an N64 exclusive.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
- One of the only Evangelion action games of its generation. You control the Evas in their fights against the Angels. Decent game, and N64 exclusive. (On a related note, isn't it odd that as far as I know no Evangelion game has ever gotten Western release, despite the series' popularity here?)

Custom Robo
- The first game in Nintendo's Custom Robo series. I like the Custom Robo games, they're some pretty fun 3d arena combat robot fighting games. Two player only multiplayer though.

Custom Robo V2
- The second Custom Robo game. This one has four player, but alternating only (teams of two, you can switch out). Still, improved over the first game. The GC and DS Custom Robo games, which we did get, might be better, and only the GC one has true four player battles (a real shame, they're so much fun!), but still the N64 ones are fine games as well. It's odd that Nintendo didn't bring them over.

Dezaemon 3D - An N64 installment in the Japan-only shmup creator series. It includes some built-in ones to show what it can do, and also allows you to make your own shmups.

SD Hiryu no Ken Densetsu - This is the Japan-only sequel to Hiryu no Ken Twin, which was released in the US as Flying Dragon. As the name suggests, the "Virtual" mode from Flying Dragon is dropped from this release, in favor of a complete focus on the "SD" mode. It's too bad we didn't get this one.

Bomberman 64 - No, not the US Bomberman 64 from 1997, that had a different title in Japan. This one is from late 2001, and I believe was the last game released for the N64 in Japan. It's a traditional 2d Bomberman game in the classic style.

SimCity 2000 - N64 port of the PC classic. Why this wasn't released outside of Japan, I have no idea... It looks like the original game, 2d and all.

Tetris 64
- Four player N64 Tetris game which came with a bio-sensor, Wii Relax style, so that the game could adjust the intensity of the game in tune with your heartbeat.

Uchhannanchan no Honou no Challenge: Denryuu IraIra Bou
- Arcade conversion. The later Playstation port of this game was released in the US as Irritating Stick, but the earlier N64 version was not. This is a port of that arcade game where you have to move a stick through a maze without ever touching the walls; touch the sides and you lose. KuruKuru Kururin improved on this concept, but this is its spiritual predecessor.

Super Robot Taisen 64 - An N64 entry in the long-running SRT strategy game series.

Getter Love!! Chou Renai Party Game - Four player multiplayer dating sim boardgame. Yes, really. You play as a guy, and move to different locations in town as you try to win the love of a girl before the other guys do first. Obviously it'd require knowledge of the language, but I don't know of anything else quite like this...

Super B-Daman Battle Phoenix 64 - B-Daman (kids' anime series) party game collection. Multiplayer focus, play through different (mini)game types.

Puyo Puyo Sun 64 and Puyo Puyo~n Party - Two Puyo Puyo games. Puyo Puyo~n Party (~n is the fourth Puyo Puyo game, Sun the third) was one of the first Puyo Puyo games with 4 player multiplayer. Both are solid, fun Puyo Puyo titles. Also on other platforms.

Susume! Taisen Puzzle Dama: Toukon! Marumata Chou
- Block dropping puzzle game with anime-style characters. Match three to make things disappear, etc. Also on Playstation.

Doraemon, Doraemon 2, and Doraemon 3 - 3d platformers based on the popular anime series. I believe that these three games are the only platformers on the N64 that were only released in Japan, Taz Express being the other one that didn't get a US release.

Robot Ponkottsu 64: Nanatsu no Umi no Caramel (Robopon 64) - Pokemon-"inspired" RPG. The GBC Robopon game was released in the US, but not the N64 one.

Zool: Majou Tsukai Densetsu
- Another Pokemon-styled RPG. Apparently mediocre.

Onegai Monsters - Wait for it... another Pokemon knockoff RPG. It's got a monster breeding aspect, as well as standard RPG gameplay.

PD Ultraman Battle Collection 64 - Mediocre looking Ultraman RPG with one unique feature -- with the Transfer Pak, any GB game you put into the slot will generate a character by looking at the cart's data.

Nintama Rantarou 64 Game Gallery - Tile-flipping puzzle game based on the anime series of the same name.

Goemon Mononoke Sugoroku - I said I wasn't going to list stuff like this (board games), but I've got to make an exception for the Goemon one. This is a Goemon-themed Sugoroku board game game.

Densha de Go! 64 - An N64 edition of the oddly popular train driving sim series.

Choro Q 64 2: Hacha Mecha Grand Prix Race - The JP-only sequel to the US-released Penny Racers. I found the first one kind of frustrating thanks to the weird control, but I don't know if this one is different.

Yakouchuu II: Satsujin Kouru - Text novel game. Know Japanese.

Nintendo 64 DD

Also, of course Japan only got the 64DD unit, which had nine disks released for it. The system's library was:

Mario Artist: Paint Studio
- The new Mario Paint, essentially. Came with a mouse. Also supports the Capture Cartridge and Game Boy Camera (via Transfer Pak) for importing video and photos.

Mario Artist: Talent Studio
- Animation production software. Came with the Capture Cartridge, which allows you to capture video from the TV to use in your creations.

Mario Artist: Polygon Studio
- For making simple 3d models and environments.

Mario Artist: Communication Kit
- Allowed people with Randnet to upload their creations with the three disks above to the Randnet online service, for trading with others. Obviously, this is now useless.

F-Zero X Expansion Kit
- The reason why most people want a 64DD, and for good reason... it's the obvious standout of the 64DD lineup. It's really too bad that Nintendo hasn't put this on Virtual Console.

Doshin the Giant (Kyojin no Doshin)
- Action sim, sort of god game-ish I think... never played it. There was also a Gamecube port, but it was only released in Japan and Europe, unfortunately.

Kyojin no Doshin Kaihou Sensen Chibikko Chikko Daishuugou
(Doshin the Giant addon) - More stuff for the game above.

SimCity 64
- Another SimCity 2000 port, like the cart release, but this one is redone in polygonal 3d. It also adds a street view, so you can go down, walk around town, and ask the townspeople about what they think of your city. Gameplay remains straight SC2K, though. (Of course, SC2k is probably the high point of the series, so that's not such a bad thing...).

Japan Pro Golf Tour 64
- As the name suggests, it's a 64DD golf game.
