Wtf? Why is the Spectrum version on tape so cheap? Its not like that had a choice between disc and tape. Charge them £12.99!!! :lol

Ghosts n Goblins was the first ever game I imported from overseas. At the time I was living in Papua New Guinea and was in the process of saving for a 1541. It took about 4 weeks to arrive and of course back then, no email confirmation or tracking number! It wasnt till later we sussed out you could dub the tapes using a twin cassette deck. I used to use a 90min tape and cram about 5-6 games per side and have counter numbers written on the inlay with the names of the games.

Actually, speaking of the past, they did just that on Virgin radion here in the UK not long ago. One of the DJ's was talking about the C64/Speccy/Amstrad era and said how on one night per week they would play a program over the air waves and you copy it onto a blank tape. :D

Played that quite a bit. I only had it on tape though and the loading times were terrrrible. I think it took like 30 minutes to load in, then you had to turn the tape over and load some more before the fight. Luckily I 'backed it up' on disk with my Action Replay and it wasn't so bad.

I can still remember the whistling sounds of the crowd...

At least C64 really had thousands of games like the ad says.

"Perhaps the most striking aspect of the Commodore 64's gaming history is the sheer number of game titles written for the machine. In total (according to Gamebase 64) there exist well over 20,000 unique game titles for the Commodore 64 - perhaps the largest game catalog for any home computer or game console to date, and easily rivaling the quantity of games produced for the ZX Spectrum."

Man, every time I look at this thread, I see other games I've loved and forgotten - Buggy Boy, Bionic Commando, The Goonies. What an awesome thread!

This must have been one of the worst games ever. Pinnacle of bad movie/tv tie-ins. Bad Ocean, bad.
I almost got rid of my Knight Rider pyjamas after playing this game. What a travesty! And Ocean were my one of favourite publishers/developers on the C64, too, which only added to the disappointment.

And the goddamn match begins as soon as it finishes loading. So often I'd leave it loading, and come back to find that I've lost the fight because I wasn't there sitting in front of my TV. Another 30 minutes down the drain.

Just thought, does anyone remember Potty Pigeon?

Yeah, I played loooads of Potty Pigeon back in the day. That funeral march music during the game over screen was really long as well, very morbid! I liked how the bird flying had acceleration and that you had to slow down before turning around.

Well that was one of the benefits of the magic of the era when one man could make entire game from A-Z.

It's interesting Speccy library was over 14k - considering C64 hw outsold it at least 6:1, I sort of imagined difference was larger. Then again porting seemed to be as rampant as ever back then too...

I loved Raid Over Moscow. Did anyone else ever get stuck in the hangar cause you didn't know how to open the hangar doors?

I think I'm allowed to ask, what's the best C64 emulator? I'm thinking about putting one on my PSP (I put one on my DS awhile back, and it was pretty decent). I do still have my C64, but I'd have to take it out of storage. I also just found my "Plug n' Play" joystick.

I loved Raid over Moscow and Beach Head from the same developer...there was one more from them I can't remember.

Does anyone know the name of a game, top down shooter I think that had the Ride of the Valkyries theme in it? That was an amazing stiring bit of music as you flew into a battle, just like Apocalypse Now. 10 points for the name of the game.

No kidding. You seen the differences in the C64 Last Ninja 2 and the NES? My god, it's fucking hilarious. First time I seen the NES version I couldn't stop laughing. They even added a kooky sound track that destroys any atmosphere they created with the original game.

Watch a minute or so of the C64 one first:

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=FCNMcUzQ3Ws

Now the NES version:

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=6fLxjLVw4ts

Thank me for the laughs later.
This is a very good illustration of the advantage C64 has over NES/Famicom.

The NES doesn't have a framebuffer, it has a character reference map. That is, a map of what pixel blocks from the ROM should be placed where on the screen. That saves quite a bit of RAM both in on-die buffer RAM on the video chip and space for the whole screen in main RAM.
BUT is also means the everything in the background graphics (ie. everything not sprites) is confined to little square boxes. That gives the characteristic squarish look to the graphics on NES.
Why not just have unique tiles for every tile on the screen you ask? First off, there isn't enough bits in the charactermap to address so many tiles. Secondly, that approach would need huge ROMs for large games, something which was a definite nono in the early day of the Famicom/NES.

The C64 on the other hand has a real (compressed) framebuffer, and a kind of simple blitter function on the VIC (a "litter" (as in line) intead of "block").
This means that you can place just about anything one the screen everywhere and at a good speed.
NES sacrificed flexibility to gain resolution and to cut costs.
C64 has a bit lower resolution in full colour mode (but higher on limited colour mode) But it has larger sprites and a lot more RAM to do creative stuff with.
Look at the way the screen rebuilds in the Last Ninja 2 every time the screen flicks in C64, that's the "random" placement of scene elements taking place.
On the NES a lot of the tiles has to be identical to be able to display.

And again the SID kicks the NES soundchips ass any day.

Loved both those games. On one of the Smackdown games I used to have fun recreating old 8-bit wrestlers from Championship Wrestling, Bop n Wrestle, Mat Mania and Pro Wrestling

Loved Raid Over Moscow. I had the three pack from Access that included Beach Head I and II and Moscow, awesome bargain.

Another one I liked was Raid on Bungling Bay:

Faaaaaarq, Raid on Bungling Bay, theres an oldie. Isnt the guy who was behind that the same guy who is making Spore for the PC?

Ive posted a few times in this thread, but havent added any screens. Here are a few that havent been shown (might have been mentioned)

Fort Apocalypse.

First ever game I played on the C65 and goes back to around 1982-83 I think. Start above ground, work your way undergorund into the base. Bestroy it, try and fly back out. USE THE NAVATRON!!!! :D

Thrust

Laws of gravity apply. Use the thrust to fight the gravity, thrust and sheilds use fuel. Shield button used to absorb full. Find the pod in the caverns and return to the surface.

Imo, the greatest comic to game conversion ever. Fantastic adventure game in the mould of a comic. Fantastic.

I would be amazed if anyone had this... or knows the name...

It was a text adventure game... no graphics... it did have a few sounds...

There was a dock, grave-stones... a bell would dong... zombies...

It might have been a 4-1 adventure game, it was all text...

Anyone?

I know it is a very tiny description... but that is all I remember...

I am sure it was on floppy-disk, cuz I did not have the tape machine.

Here's the latest update for the Direct Downloads. What makes this the most special of updates is all the information I found when doing the research on each game.

First there are TWO sequels to The Dark Castle (one of which is getting released this year). Next is that there was a remake of IO which got released last year. Third that IO remake lead me to other retro remakes which I will post later. There's more misc information which can be found under each title.

ENJOY!

Amazing thread, but there was one title that wasn`t on here.

You were a treasure hunter, and explored all types of pyramids and whatnot. It was a top down game made by either Activision or Accolade. I used to play it like crazy and i`ve been trying to remember the name for years.

This thread reminded me why I never regret growing up with a C64 instead of a NES.

Me too! What a great thread. Some of favorite C64 games include the Ultima's, Questron, Maniac Mansion, Archon, etc.

There was a game called Human Race I believe, it was most terrible, hardest game I ever played, from what I remember anyways.

I think you are looking for a similar collection I am looking for. It was a 4 in 1 text adventure game pack which I was looking for in the Text Adventure Games thread. I did end up finding one of the games (through much eye strained searching) but the others remain lost. All I can remember was that "Castle" was in the title (unless my memory is lying to me).

Doesn't sound familiar but don't be suprised that it pops up at some point. I will keep my eye out for anything which fits you description.

Here some more ads for your eyes to feast upon. I especially like how The Great Giana Sisters' looks varies from pic to pic.

Yeah, Will Wright. He's done some stuff since.

My brothers and I still have C64 at our parents place. Next time I go visit I will have to boot it up.

The C64 also gave me appreciation for detailed game manuals and for getting extras (ex. cloth maps in Ultima).

The same company made Kane, which was also a sick joke:

lol, I never got passed the first stage either. I got some enjoyment out of Kane atleast, it was fun to try to shoot the birds with the bow and arrow. The sound they made was great.

Whats the best way of playing games on a real C64, is there some kind of device that lets you transfer games to a SD-card an play them on the C64, that emulates the floppy drive so most software run?

My latest update is remakes! While doing some heavy searching I came across this guy. He’s worked on many C64 remakes (and coincidently the Wizball remake Gazunta mentioned earlier) such as the following:

IO

Aztec Challenge

Warhawk

Monty on the Run

Cybernoid 2

Wizball

You can find these remakes and more at these two sites:

Also in cased you all didn't see it, there were two sequels and a remake to Dark Castle. Return to Dark Castle (aka Dark Castle III) is to be released this year. Click HERE to go to the website. You can buy or download the demo to Color Dark Castle HERE.

all this talk makes me sad that i don't know the name of the first videogame i played. all i know is that i played it with a keyboard (perhaps a commodore system), it involved a guy that looked like mario, i jumped over barrels and climbed up ladders, but there was no donkey kong (each level had an exit that started the next level) and the levels were shades of gray and the character had orange and white i think. i assume it's some knockoff game, which has made it even harder to find it :(

Yeah, same here, Kane was at least playable to an extent. Human Race was not. Good ol Mastertronic....for every decent game they released, 10 others were crap on a stick.

What?! How could they? The first one was so good and so original at the time.

I wanted to post this awhile back but I couldn't find any screenshots of it. So I decided to kick back after a long night of work, drink a few Hard Lemonades, play this game and take screenshots of the adventure.

Kid Niki C64 may have been considered a bad port by many (some considered it one of the worst games on the system) but when I was young I loved the hell out of it. Even though it was harder than petrified shit I felt compelled to beat it. Eventually after weeks (perhaps months) of playing the game I did finish the damn thing. Playing it now I'm pretty amazed on how much the patterns are ingrained in me. Even though I haven't played the game in about 15 years I was able to make it all the way to stage 4 without much strain.

The game has alot of weird problems. Once you start moving, your character automatically runs and doesn't stop unless you use your sword. There's no music so all you're left with is the annoying sound of your spinning sword. The bosses provide odd battles as you can't tell if you're hitting them or not. I remember spending forever trying to kill the first boss only to find out you have to hit him from behind.

When I eventually played the NES version, not only did it feel next gen to me, it was also very easy because I was so accustomed to the C64 controls. So anyways, that's Kid Niki: The Radical Ninja.
