As for being original, yeah, maybe you should google some Dizzie Rascal, Arful Dodger or Lady Soverign.
She really brings nothing new to the table, well, apart of her ethnicity and being less shameful in her sampling.

artful dodger?! :lol :lol are you gonna recommend us all craig david for your next hot slice from the UK underground?

i like both artists a lot but M.I.A is bang on here. lady gaga's quirkiness barely comes through in her music at all, leaving me to wait for awesome videos to be released for slightly boring songs so that i can listen to them and have something interesting to think about (see: telephone).

i think gaga is pure pop with quirky bits and M.I.A is almost pure random bricolage with pop bits. there's no reason why either shouldn't be on the radio, really, but if i had to take one i'd go with M.I.A.

Great points, though music aside, I like GaGa a lot better.

Wow, she's totally right. What was I thinking when I liked that bitch? Fuck you, Gaga!

Who is this MIA person again?

I don't understand why musicians in general garner so much hate from people. :lol Unless one of 'em ran over your dog or something, why do people take the effort to make it clear how much they hate some pop singer? Ridiculous.

Because that is what bitches and haters do :lol

Probably never meant them, maybe not even seen them in person, definitely don't know shit about their life or how hard they work. But they are in the position you want.

So I just sampled a few of M.I.A.'s songs on YouTube. Not for me. I confess myself baffled how anyone could compare her to Lady Gaga in any meaningful way. The women have markedly different musical and visual styles.

It strikes me that M.I.A. is trying to generate publicity. There's no shame in that, and yet she might have volunteered a more insightful comment on the subject of Gaga's influences while she had the opportunity. It's never been a secret that Gaga's songs and fashions are often partially and sometimes entirely inspired by an array of other artists. Has she ever, on any occasion at any time in the compass of the public eye, been coy about her muses? Listen to or read one of Gaga's extended interviews. Her candid answers and easy articulation will leave no doubt in the mind of any attentive person that she is the driver of her own creative vehicle, from the content of her songs to the features of her wardrobe.

For those looking up M.I.A.'s other works, my favorite songs of hers (besides Paper Planes) are 1. Jimmy, and 2. Come Around.

The first one is a cover of an old Bollywood disco song, and the second was written by Timbaland.

Another reason why I love M.I.A, what she said is so true. If you look at older pictures and videos of Lady Ga Ga she wasnt as half as quirky and eccentric as she is now.

Now that's more like it. Catchy song, and who doesn't love the thousand-hand Bodhisattva dance? I'm still not crazy about any of the other songs of hers I've heard, though.

I know, right? How dare Lady Gaga evolve her style! All the legit artists let themselves go stale.

Well maybe she should do the same, then people may actually know who she is.

The point im making is Lady Ga Ga claims to have always been out there with her style, and from what I see from her older pictures is just a girl that looks like everyone else she is not half as wacky as she is now, now she is just being diffrent for the sake of being diffrent and getting media attention. Shes turned into this characture in which im not even sure she knows who she is anymore.

I know what you're saying. I'm just trying to have some fun. Anyway, Gaga gets the whole "entertainment" aspect of being a popstar. You have to be able to sell it. She may have sold herself, but hey, that's the business these days. I doubt she's worrying about it since she's the biggest act out there, currently.

To me, Gaga represents just how vapid music has become. Everything about her is essentially a means to distract from the quality (or lack thereof) of the music - the getups, the ridiculous "art", controversy, etc. Obviously this has been done before, by artists with talent (Elton John) and those without talent (Madonna) so it's nothing new. But it's still odd seeing people praise her for putting out repetitive music with gibberish for lyrics and videos full of product placement and whatever abstract bullshit passes as art these days. I call it forced nonsense.
You'll get used to it. There's a forever-cycle of people defending the latest marketed "superstar" and using her popularity and accessibility as a means to sell her as being more than a profitable gimmick.

Why people value money making ability/potential so much in our culture--especially when it concerns art--is just disturbing.

This is like choosing between the two hottest chicks at a party and who you're gonna fuck. I wish I could go for both but M.I.A is too awesome.

WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT? The Clash and Peaches is considered shit?

Peaches is OK, but I've never seen what was supposedly so great about The Clash. To me they were a mediocre reggae band trying too hard to be a punk band. No thanks, I'll stick to Ramones and The Misfits.

Why does it matter at all? She isn't pretending that this is how she is in everyday real life. It's a stage persona. She's an entertainer, not just a singer. This means she puts on a show for people.

Maybe you don't like it, which is cool. Those old pictures and videos of her are still her today. In real life. She's not trying to make people think she's something that she's not. She knows we know it's an act.

I'm pretty sure she goes out dressed up as her "persona" all the time and falls asleep and wakes up as her too. This isn't like some Sgt. Peppers or Ziggy Stardust thing---I think she is really just Lady Gaga all the time.

Could you imagine sleeping in that bubble outfit? HAS to hurt your back.

Sounds like she has a bit of a complex. None of the questions referenced Gaga, yet all her answers zoomed in around her.

edit - I've not listened to her music, but if her music itself is really 'weird' etc. then maybe she should consider making it more 'pop' if she wants to be as big as Gaga. Gaga is pure pop and unashamedly so. You're not going to be as popular as she is with some seriously out there 'weird' music...if MIA's music is that way by choice then she shouldn't resent Gaga's success or 'model'.

edit 2 - I hadn't even heard of MIA til this thread. The Gaga 'invoking' is very clearly designed to get her more column inches and attention. So make her person #100,001 to make a living off Gaga... :P

20 years from now we'll know who lady gaga is, m.i.a. will be just that.

Which is a clear indication of Gaga's talent and has nothing to do with pluggers promoting Gaga to death, and noone doing so for M.I.A. of course.

Karen O wins.

Oh and @Thread : Early MIA was Rad, but then she fall into fashion and fluo and Timbaland. Kala is a good album with nice tunes, but it's waaaaaay below Arular.

And I don't like Gaga at all.

Well damn, this MIA chick sounds pretty fucking awesome. :D

I feel like I lose every time I am forced to hear that awful Maps song so I guess she does win.

I'm not sure anyone who enjoys Lady Gaga values her 'money making ability', just the fact she makes catchy pop songs you can dance to and has a quirky image and the talent to back it up. It's just fun pop. Luckily, I'm sure no one else is reading into it as the downfall of music as we know it. I'm sure she makes her record company mad cash; but from what I read she spends all hers on her tour and outfits.

I dislike both their music. I do however enjoy Gaga's ridiculous outfits so I guess she wins out for me.

Though Róisín Murphy covered the whole crazy outfit thing way before Gaga, and she makes better music as well (but still not that good).

Yes, but what does "no business discussing music" mean? Its making her out to be more important than she actually is.
If you don't know who MIA is in two-thousand-and-fucking-ten, you're ignorant to modern music and popular culture—and this thread is about both.

She also looks like quite the skank.
Have you even looked at GaGa? FFS... :/

I personally like M.I.A much more than GaGa, but I just don't care enough to keep an actual discussion about this :P
