Manga News/Discussion |OTD| Oh, you're reading manga? How cute...

Promised Neverland
C4kB0TAWYAApKzV.jpg:large

Havent teared up this much from a manga chapter since BLack Clover :(

They should just leave Emma and let Ray and Norman escape. Its the only way for everyone to survive. Emma can have a happy childhood knowing that her friends got away and that she can eventually become a mom. Its the safest way out.

A plot with Norman fleeing and the others left alone in a higher security is not good.

I need next chapter today.

MHA and Haikyu!! for one. And I say this as a big fan of Promised Neverland.

Oh, I forgot MHA is in Jump. To be fair, I rarely know what magazine a series is in unless someone tells me.

I'd say MHA is better due to being out longer. And even though I love MHA to death, if Promised Neverland had an equal number of chapters it wouldn't even be a contest.

I don't read Haikyu so *shrugs* it might be with all the love it gets. I'm not well versed in it.

I didn't dislike it, but I'm going to need to see more to see if the plot is going to get really interesting. I think it hinges largely on how interesting the whole Libido thing ends up being - it could go really well with cool powers used in interesting ways in the story, or it could fall really flat. I approve of the central character set up because I enjoy the whole childhood friends romance thing, so I hope that the superpowers back this up.

We Never Learn 2

I enjoyed this. Jump needs something funny and soothing in it, and I'm liking all of the characters so far. Furuhashi's motivation was quite cute, so this was a fun read. I don't see this lasting for too long though, but I've enjoyed these two chapters.

Phoenix volumes 3-5

Oh, I see. I see now why Phoenix is considered one of the highlights of Tezuka career. The first two volumes were respectively the start and the end of the story, so they were kind of... 'special', spending more pages in setting up everything and finishing it.
It's in these volumes where you can see the real meat of this comic, what Tezuka was planning with the series: a tour de force from ancient times to the future that examines with different time periods and types of stories themes like immortality (literal or metaphorical), the meaning of life, religion, rebirth, and more, all using big leitmotifs like war, love, drama, suspense and mystery.

Because the structure, standalone stories, he can tell a tragic love story in one and a mystery in another, a historical piece about sculptors here and space adventurers meeting aliens there, so there is a nice variety even if the overall theme remains; and as added bonus the different stories sometimes interconnect with each other, making the impression of a sweeping epic tale.

edit : volume 6. Incest with yandere mon?!!

I really liked Phoenix but I also came out a little bitter about it in the end

not because it is unfinished -you know it is unfinished, right?- but because some of the fates of the protagonists are just so dire. I get that it is about reincarnation and karma and stuff but jeeez. The Phoenix is too big of an asshole

Emma will probably never want to be a mother knowing what happens to the kids, and Ray or Norman will never leave Emma behind. It's the whole reason what Isabella did was so effective.

BLack Clover

BLack Meteorite is the best move. The anti magic homing in on mana and just being able to prevent anything else from happening is the best. How will Dorksta even top this in the next arc and beyond.

Best chapter and Im so glad it didnt do like people though, where he would become a slave to his powers and go berserk.

The flaw I'm noticing now is that Tezuka was a hyper active workaholic and somehow his own personal frenetic pace is transmitted to his characters. He really doesn't let them 'breathe', the pace is sometimes too breakneck, with characters doing three totally different things in different contexts with barely a dozen pages in between the three moments.
In fact I said before he does different stories... and it's true, but at the same time they all feel a bit similar because of this.

All Rounder Meguru 109-110

It finally got an update.
Stark remembrance that this manga has almost no direction what so ever. Just fights for the sake of it.

Yeah at this point it's clear he isn't going to do anything special with the characters, it's all pure sport.
Still, it's surprisingly fun read, he took the perfect protagonist, an average fighter whose special treat it's that he is flexible in how to fight, 'all-rounder' and improvisational. It's so fun to see him fumble around and almost lose and somehow in the end win by a hair's breadth.

Wierd, Ugly and just a wee bit racist.

In the same way Popo was.

And if Krone actually had a point to showing up then I might let it slide but naw.

She was largely there to be Black Guy Dies First (Ignoring blantant Nina Tucker being offed for sympathy),

This is super hokey but its not as terrible as some of yall made it out to be. The biggest problem with this chapter is that it was entirely back story and set up without really getting the plot going. I need to see how the libido powers develop and what combat looks like before I write this off as garbage.

That was actually what I liked most about it.
Too many terrible action shonen start with a first chapter that feels too.... cramped? The generic 'introduce character -> bad situation -> cool power awakens' pattern, like recently Demon's Plan and Amalgam. And then there are others like Red Sprite that feel like they have to set up everything in the first chapter which easily leads to awkward/rushed pacing.
In that way I appreciate U19 taking things a little slower.

I agree. It all really hinges on if the next few chapters can make use of all this backstory in an interesting way

Tongari Boushi no Atelier ch1 by Shirahama Kamome

In a world where magic exists, a little girl dreams of becoming a witch one day. Alas, such endeavors are reserved to those born with the gift for it. One day, as a flying chariot stops by her remote village, she learns of the nature of magic, and is then forced to undertake a journey towards mastering it.

The first thing that stands out is definitely the art, which is very pretty and detailed, and suits the fantastical setting well. Story so far is solid, and it certainly has potential to be great.

Out of everything this story could touch, I never thought gender identity would be one of them. Well, I hope the author doesn't screw this up.

U19 chapter 1

Honestly not too bad. I like the art, but it couldn't resist throwing in a lot of unnecessary shonen shit like the red string of fate promise and superpowered groups.

Premise seems like it will get grating. Not trusting some new Shonen Jump author to be able to use the premise as a metaphor well enough.

Naraku no Adu 1-4
Still have no clue if this will be going down the Berserk or Akame ga Kill! path (This last chapter points to maybe Berserk path thankfully). If nothing else I enjoy some of the creature design, I guess the mangaka previously having a 10 volume Monster Hunter manga helps out there.

shhh Graham I'm still compiling this Radiant map
Tsugumomo ch. 97

Hot damn at these chain attacks. Better than OPM's tournament fights tbh.

But yeah this was really, really cool. Felt like we haven't seen a fight this fun in a minute. So of course I expect at least a dozen sexualized chapters to follow this up, because that's how this dumb manga works.

World Embryo END

I remember starting this years ago "because it's from Chrono Crusade's author", but at one point the translations basically died, so I basically had this "on hold" for like 3 years.

I remember nothing about this, I have no idea WTF the ending was about or have any emotional attachment to this, but I can finally put 67/67 on MAL.

I guess I'll feel the same about Xxxholic if CLAMP ever decides to stop fucking around at one point.

Tsugumomo 97

That fight was fucking dope. Yet again some incredible kinetic artwork as well as creative usage of powers such as how the chains were used. Having her be able to overcome her brother by basically using the chains like an obi was really smart.

I think the previous chapters did a good version of their serious shit combined with...well, let's not beat around the bush, porn. Specifically I really liked the MC's new flute partner's reaction to his face when he learned about the enslavement and saw the Mayoiga tsugumomo asking for help. Did a LOT to build up his anger even though we always see him all smiles and stuff.

I swear to god though, this kid is what like 14 or 15 and has come so close to fucking like 10 girls. He's probably been jacked off by women more times than I've had sex with actual women. Someone should work on an edit of Tsugumomo that just cuts all the fan-service scenes. I bet it'd be the best battle manga that's ever existed.

Seriously. This kid gets so much action. That and he's just a kid, I mean he's in like 8th grade. Though then again, I remember what I was like in 8th grade.

Maybe the author need another manga thats mostly focused on battle with a lot less lewd content.

given previous comments that sounds like a impossibility

Hey any mindgame and various betrayal themed manga with gaming rulesets like

-Alice of Borderland
-Liar Game
-Kaiji
-Gambling Emperoe Zero

Stuff like that.

Any recommendations?

Tongari Boushi no Atelier 1

The art of this manga is great, but its terrible story composition and too-safe panelling isn't enough to compensate it. The moment where her mother got accidentally petrified clearly meant to incite some emotion from the reader, but due to the flow and very little panel actually gave to the sight of petrified mother makes it fail to achieve it. Little variation of panels combined with too many unnecessary show of the protagonist comical reaction, makes the supposedly thick 60 pages first chapter feels empty and doesn't really tells you anything.

This is very rough start for a first chapter, and were if not for the pure artistry, I wouldn't put more attention into it. Here's hoping that the author will improve on later chapters.

Risou no Himo Seikatsu 1

This is probably going yet another Isekai story with interesting premise but lackluster execution. Due to the setup, I'll probably going to follow it for a little while until it got too self indulgent for me to care.

Don't Make Me So Turned On 1 (NSFW)
From the award-winning author of Is My Hobby Weird? (aka yuri butts) comes an inspired new adventure about the lives of office ladies. Actually, the premise seems far more mundane than butts' was, but only connoisseurs will be interested in the plot.

Kakegurui and Tatoe Hai ni natte mo, though the former gets a translated chapter once in a blue moon and the latter is Battleship™ (which is not necessarily a bad thing). Akagi is cool as well, but there's not much betrayal.

The Promised Neverland.
Damn, mama has them screwed. I really love how this manga keeps things fresh and constantly changes the threats and stakes.
I wonder what compromises they will have to make now

Fairy Tail.
Lol. Remember how the 12 were supposed to be these ridiculously powerful guys and how all of them on their own were more powerfull than anyone in the country and how every time one appeared everyone had to comment about their "ridiculous magic power"?
Well all but one have been defeated "because of reasons". I mean lol, even Elfman who is like the Krillin of Fairy Tail took one down

MHA
This overly serious guy being all about jokes and humor is kinda funny. The unique secondary characters are easily the biggest strenght of this manga

Shoujo Apocalypse Adventure ch24-25

Most of the military stuff looks strangely antiquated.

They got an interesting pet at least.

Tsugumomo ch97

Nice action sequence. It's great how she was able to finally stand up to him.

Nukoduke! ch95-96

Winter is full of events huh. Not a moment's rest for the Nukos.

Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san ch23

What a sad lonely puppy.

THEN WHO WAS TEXT? Other series have death flags, this one has death laser-guided targeters. Would've thought that manholes would be an obvious place to check for missing children, but I've learned not to expect too much from adults in this series. Or kids. Or animals. Or inanimate objects. The only person you can trust is Yomi, except for when she's channelling truck-kun.
