Just to add a bit. Sell-through is 80~90%, download version sold over 10K copies.

I think someone will be disappointed with this news. :p

Tweet says until Sunday.
Thanks!

This means that SK:EV's first week is...

80-90% sell-through on 100,000 --> 80,000 < x < 90,000
Retail only --> 70,000 < x< 80,000

Wow, Estival Versus did pretty well considering it didn't have the help that Shinovi Versus had.

Shinovi Versus did 120,000 in 5 days, but it was helped by the anime airing at the same time and the Vita price cut the same week.

Really nice for Senran Kagura!

So Senran Jagura is healthy as a franchise, it simply didn't have the right audience on 3ds?
It was also really badly marketed. EV was announced at the same time as 2, and both SV and EV had an anime/OVA at the same time + tons more of merchandising.
Obviously the audience for this kind of game is bigger on Vita, but there's other factors to consider.
It will be interesting to see how well 2 will do in the west for example, since Burst (3DS) sold better than what they expected and pushed for Marvelous Europe and more interest from the publisher.

Oh I know. I just expected the 1.7M new 3DS owners to be a far more active fanbase than the 2M+ on the Wii U who pretty much bought 4 games and very little else (MK8, 3D World, NSMBU & Smash Wii U).
Did Xenoblade even get the same reception in Japan that it got in the west? Sales definitely didn't suggest an outpouring of love. The original was under 150k several months after it launched. I wouldn't be surprised in the game sold close to that amount as a Gamestop exclusive in the US. Especially after Gamestop "found" a few thousand copies a year or two back.

Japanese developers are weird with platform choice. They can easily do a cheap 3ds to Psv port and selling Senran II on both platforms. I'm sure they can earn a little more money from the very little work.

However, they always choose to make game exclusive to a platform. I guess we now get more Playstation multiplatform than before, but that's still somehow exclusive. Koei port mouse to PSP for only 20-30K sales. A WiiU port would do similar..

Badly marketed? Is your "badly marketed" based solely on the time of announcement, and the anime/ova? I am not in Japan, so I am not really sure how it is marketed aside from what I see online, but...

The effect of the anime is far different from the OVA. For the OVA, you either had to buy the game, or buy it by itself. Where as the anime was aired in television channels, a few months before the game. Indeed, (AFAIK), the OVA was aired on AT-X but that's on March 29th evening in Japan - at which point, they already had that 100k shipment (and 80~90% sold-through).

Senran Kagura 2 actually had more (development?) budget than Shinovi Versus and as reflected in one of their financial reports - did not reach expectations (at that time) in Japan
(despite that there were some people in Mediacreate threads who were arguing that it somehow was "fine" because it sold as much as the first game and had a higher price than Burst therefore making it "fine").

P.S. Senran Kagura 2 was already known (and was acknowledged to be on 3DS) before Shinovi Versus was released, albeit not properly announced. I remember Takaki "re-"confirming it in one of the SV streams.

Whoops, didn't notice that Kysen already posted the info about Estival Versus' sell-through and download numbers.

So Senran Jagura is healthy as a franchise, it simply didn't have the right audience on 3ds?
The first 2 games on 3DS sold over 100K copies each. It definitely has/had the right audience.

Really nice for Senran Kagura!

It's also possible that a majority of the fans simply prefer Versus series due to the Warriors-style gameplay, better graphics, bigger character roster, more lewd etc.

Badly marketed as in badly marketed, just as I said. SV/EV had animes, lots of merchandising, more ads, more coverage in stores, etc.
SK2 had the usual pre-order store exclusives bonuses and a food cross-promotion with some restaurants in Tokyo. Not on the same scale at all.
And not disagreeing with the rest of your post, just saying. The budget was in the game (it's still the best in terms of gameplay), but really nothing in terms of marketing.

Wasn't anywhere close to 80-90% sellthrough, though.

Were there any tweets about its sales at the time too? I don't remember any, but I may be wrong on that.
it did around 43k, lowest in the franchise, there's not much reason to keep it on the 3ds honestly

We'll see whether EV is going to replicate or even surpass SV first week (note that it is also on two platforms).
SV did 94k it's first week so EV has already surpassed it

If healthy means declining, then yes. It'd be interesting to see the split across platforms. Also note that SK2 also got a shipment around 100k, which didn't prevent bargain bins to be full of copies.
the difference is that SK:EV got a sellthrough about 80-90% and not 50% as SK2 on 3DS, so probably after 3 days EV already did better than SK2, worst case scenario, EV will take 10 days to perform better than SK2

so I don't understand where the brand is declining....
maybe Marvelous will realize that SK and that kind of games selll better on Sony platforms than 3DS, despite the huge userbase (
which doesn't like boobs probably
:D )

It's perfectly reasonable to assume that retailers were way more cautious this time in ordering units, since SK2 had a lot of leftover after the first week.

cautious ? shipment is around 100k as it was for SK2, so I don't see any difference

the difference is the sellthrough : around 80-90% for EV, while it was just 50% for SK2

Shipment might have been low, and after first day sell-through retailers ordered more, such that the total shipment is at 100k.

Edit: oh cool, the shipment was only for the first few days. Then the game debuted at 100k incl. digital sales; that part wasn't clear to me. Nice!

It could also be a case like Persona/SMT, where the subseries ends up more popular than the mainline. The Versus series has 3rd person gameplay and a much bigger cast of characters, while SK2 basically kept just the original girls and focused on mechanical enhancements for the original gameplay.

Poor retailers :p

But yeah, good for Marvelous. There was no way the series was already dead.

The 2.5D beat 'em all gameplay and Nintendo handheld releases, on the other hand...
It would have been much better if they released in different order like SK, Burst, 2, SV then EV. However I really can't blame Marvelous that I'm guessing SK was meant to be one-time only deal (unlike other media franchises).

Why is Type 0 considered good sales? Even for a spin off that's really low and doesn't bode well for FFXV (would we all be saying good sales if XV sold 300-500k?)
It's a remaster of a PSP game that isn't even considered "old". It's a product that's aimed at the western audience.

Not sure how you came to a conclusion of FFXV bombing because of this.

I never said bombing, but the gaming audience in Japan just isn't on any of the consoles anymore...The entire point of Type-0 was to get more FF fans on PS4

lol come on. SK2 was the only massive decline. EV might not get to SV sales but its hardly a notable decline. EV and SV are both significantly up in SK1 and SK2.
