Wow, Freedom Wars definitely surpassed Sony's expectations then. Hopefully they have another shipment soon. Good start for Watch Dogs (PS4) too.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Fixed.

But it looks good - its been a while since Vita had a bigger exclusive release.

It's rather awful that Freedom Wars shipped without any online multiplayer. Sony Japan should have enough experience to help Shift/Dimps with that. Even with that said, I enjoyed the demo a lot and with the game having a robust single player mode, it may not be such a big deal but I think that might have dissuaded some people from buying it.

From the pictures above it looks like it have a quite good amount of shelf space. Did retailers have low expectations for Freedom Wars?

They've said the online multiplayer is launching in summer. They probably wanted to release the game in June in order to get some "summer drought" sales and not overlap with Toukiden Extreme.

Hopefully they'll get it soon, but ad-hoc is pretty big there so it may not be such a big problem. It's fun that there is an online pass for a game without online though lol.

Speaking about ad-hoc, is it possible to play Freedom Wars online using ad-hoc party on the PS3?

Some people, but this is Japan. Ad-hoc is king.

The problem is that the Japanese market is all risk and no reward right now. These companies aren't just hedging their bets - they've been through the last generation and lost out big time, forced to shift to handhelds because ballooning costs and changing tastes have made console development all but impossible to justify.

And now the handheld market is also dwindling and budgets are rising there too. The generation-on-generation customer loss between the DS+PSP to 3DS+Vita is catastrophic. The only option, like it or not, is smartphones.

I find it hard to disagree with this.

Looking at COMGNET pre-order rankings...and this caught my eye:

[3DS] Devil Survivor 2 break code - 11pt

So DS2 remake on the 3DS is really happening?

They haven't said a thing for months, since Persona Q was released maybe they'll give a date for a stealth release by the end of the year or something (or it has simply been cancelled).

I have a feeling yokai watch will do very well.

I agree, but 1.2M? Unless you meant 120k?

Seems either too high/too low.

Personally, fully expecting 500k during launch week, and up to 800k before the end of the month.

It's been on that exact number of points since last year. It just resurfaces whenever the lower cut-off drops low enough.

I'm predicting even higher than that. Despite the first game being at 1.1m, lots of people would have chosen it as there free game to get with a 3DS hardware purchase during the time it was available.

That and kids who love the show waiting to just purchase the second game. Not to mention people will double dip since there are two versions!

I'm also expecting (hoping!) something like this will happen and it will become a 2m+ series:

[DS] Inazuma Eleven 2 Fire/Blizzard - 1,157,346
[DS] Inazuma Eleven - 401,820

The game has two versions, this should lead to some people buying more than one copy. Also kinda anecdotal but the game has very high preorders on Comgnet. I fully expect 700k debut minimum.

I wonder how big the initial Yo-Kai Watch 2 shipment will be.

At the very least I would expect a million units, this is Level 5 so there must be no fear of shortages :p

Level 5 biggest initial shipments:

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd moved 4.8 million units in Asia on PSP with no online multiplayer. I don't think many people over there skipped on Freedom Wars because it is Adhoc only.

I've seen some posts about select stores ending pre-orders for Youkai Watch 2.

But that was several weeks ago, I'm sure Level-5/Nintendo were able to increase production.

Honestly, I'm expecting shortages at launch. And I'm really not buying into the 1M launch week (even with 2 versions... most people will probably buy only one, just like Pokémon). I'd looooove to be wrong, though, so much.

It's certainly going to be an exciting launch.

How much did Sony ship for Freedom Wars? 350-400k?

Good to see Freedom Wars have a good start, wonder if it will give the hardware sales a decent bump.

Soul Sacrifice Delta's sales were pretty poor right? It doesn't seem like the series took off in the region. I think Sony should consider doing an HD or whatever version for PS3/PS4 and try it out there, might do better in the west that way as well.

Sinobi stated that SCE's LTD expectations for Freedom Wars are 200k. That seems a bit low to me given Soul Sacrifice did that, and its art style is less mainstream.

Delta sold about half of what the original release did. It's an expansion, not a sequel.

I don't think a port would do well on consoles anywhere. The way the game's stories are told make it very apparent it's a handheld game and the gameplay nature suits that play style. It might sell better in the west, but that says more about how the original release did on Vita than any big success.
