Media Create Sales: Week 26, 2011 (Jun 27 - Jul 3)

Takao said:
It hasn't settled. It received somewhat notable software almost every week for a month. When there isn't anything new out, and it's still selling 30k, then it has settled.
Most of it's delayed software anyway, had things gone according to plan originally 3DS likely wouldn't have dipped so low in the spring. You're right that this isn't stabilization though, it's recovery.

And no platform will "stabilize" with an empty release schedule, it'll decline.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see Super Robot Wars Z2 Part II be announced for December.

This is possible.
However, this year Banpresto is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the brand,so they need something special after SRTOG2.
...Maybe,a remake of the game that has opened the path for modern SRT...or even a sequel to that series...yeah,I'm talking about SRT Alpha. And they've said that 3DS is a possible platform for the brand, such as PSP (Z2),PS3 (OG2)...and also Wii (Neo,only?) XD
This,or SRTZ2 Part II for PSP.

Is there any significant PSP title coming soon in Japan?
Several niche games.

What a bump for the PS3. Super street fighter effect.
Torne effect.

-Fans love to talk about hardware sales, but software sales are far more important.PS3 software sales will probably top the 12 million mark in 2011,which means a growth of 33 percent over the last year.

-Look,three years ago the NDS dominated the market, the PS3 was completely irrelevant and the Wii was starting to show signs of a sudden collapse.

Level-5 CEO, if I am correct on his/her position, was quite disappointed with Nintendo's marketing strategy for 3DS, as he stated in his twitter after E3; specifically saying: even not a new color.

You need to have some initial palpable standard colors on your console on the get go, seemingly being black or white was OK for home consoles, but then they all moved to black; in Japan it seems weird colors are really needed to be available as standard options for handhelds, rather than being a drug.

Busaiku said:
I wonder if the color can push it into 35k territory.
Red model totally sold out on Amazon, since a long time ago. I think at least for some time it will continue to hit that, maybe even higher?

Anyhow, I believe the 3DS is selling very poorly, and will be even at 35K. it will barely sell 2million this way by the end of the year.

Dat pokemon power.

That's actually a higher result than I was expecting for Abyss 3D; it's a good showing for a game on a system with a small install base. Namco is smoking it if they think it'll sell a quarter-million, though. It's a remake and those never sell as well as the original, especially when it hasn't been THAT long since the original release of Abyss. Never mind the fact that, at current, roughly 20% of all DS owners would have to buy the game (or a lot of otaku would have to buy multiple copies) for the game to reach that number, and while I'm a fan of Abyss, it isn't gonna be THAT popular.

Also god damn at Meruru, seriously. 106k and climbing in physical retail alone in two weeks, not even counting Amazon or Gust's own popular mail order service? Kazuo Aoyagi must be wearing a hat made of actual, physical money at this point. Even if I don't like how fanservicey the Arland games have gotten, it warms my heart a bit to see an Atelier game ripping up the charts like this once again.

3DS is in good company so far as selling poorly is concerned. Have only been browsing the sales numbers for a while now, don't follow them as much as I used to, but it just amazes how across the board everything is way down on prior years.

No one system is selling well at all, even software sales are pretty crappy. And I'm not exactly sure where the fix is going to come from, unless, say, the 3DS explodes in sales when stuff like Mario Kart comes out. It's possible the Vita could do really well, but I don't see it being anything more than a modest success.

Maybe it's got something to do with the "casual" (as much as I hate that term) market falling away. I mean that's what really drove the success of the DS and Wii, and consequently kept the Japanese market in a strong position. Helping to hide a lot of the weakness in the core gaming market. And the 3DS doesn't have anything out yet that really taps into that.

I also like (well, don't like, and this is a really minor gripe) how the term "next-gen" got misappropriated from its original meaning to be a purely technological term.

The WiiU is part of the next generation of consoles. Its hardware power or lack thereof has nothing to do with it.

It isn't a minor gripe. I totally agree. But it goes even further. It isn't even just a technological term now, it is solely a term to describe the graphical power of a console.

I'm not sure how it evolved into it's current usage but it is pretty annoying that we have to distinguish between next generation consoles as to which are part of the next generation, and which are "next-gen."

You have rose-tinted glasses, the 3rd gen and 4th gen were soley defined by power back then (8bit and 16bit generations). 8bit consoles which released after 16bit consoles weren't considered to be in the same generation as 16bit consoles.

As WiiU will be more powerful than current gen consoles it's kind of a moot point anyway.

if 3DS was selling 30K and PSP 10K, I would have agreed; the problem is that people are buying the 30% cheaper PSP over 3DS, if we agree that they actually don't buy a system to have it for 1 year just because it is partially cheaper, we may assume they are either totally satisfied with the backlog, or the support for PSP seems to be pretty long AND good for the rest of its life compared to 3DS. Moreover, I believe Nintendo hoped to attract more younger adults, well Reggie said exactly the same thing recently; it japan PSP demographic as an average are in their late teens and not as broad as DS; I believed that them not releasing too much casual games on the platform and letting 3rd parties release what they want, partly had to do with them wanting to make it appeal to those young adults demographic. I am not sure of they have really successes.

I thought Abyss would have done better but there's no denying facts. I found this funny after reading how one of the producers/directors of the game thought it would do 100k opening.

I guess it summarizes the Wii situation pretty well when people start popping the champagne corks when a 3rd party game sells 30k first week. Really hope Nintendo start ramping up the 3rd-party relations next gen.

Huge amount of people in Japan blogging about the 7 people who bought PSP Go, calling them the Seven Samurai of PSP or something...calling them the heroes of the week

I'm amazed they sold 7 to be honest, they haven't been in stock anywhere for months.

I guess it summarizes the Wii situation pretty well when people start popping the champagne corks when a 3rd party game sells 30k first week. Really hope Nintendo start ramping up the 3rd-party relations next gen.

Or maybe we're happy that it did a lot better than the N64 game despite being an FPS in Japan. Or just maybe, we're happy that a great game does well.

We're just happy that Goldeneye did alright considering it is an FPS and could have bombed hard. Do people need to take every oppurtunity to make snarky comments about the Wii?

Looks like Abyss will have no problem reaching that 250K estimate.

...

I really doubt Bandai Namco has shipped more than 120-130.000 units; expectations of the producer of the game are completely irrelevant and detached from the reality, in particular when he should know the typical behaviour of the titles in the series after the 1st week and important as well, when he should have known the shipment as the interview he took.

Reason Goldeneye sold so well is because of the Club Nintendo Gold Classic Controller promotion... right?

You can actually just order the controller with enough points, so maybe no.

It is published by Nintendo afterall so it probably got enough of a push.
