Isn't this a bit of a catch-22 for the title and the audience?

Its as you said before, in how Nintendoand SE can be contrasted with FE:if and BSecond, and the building or lack there of of consumer confidence in your product. The narrative of a budget sequel to a game you may have like but had some quips with... is a gun shot to the knee right out of the gate on potential.

I don't think it's a good strategy overall.

If you look at how Level 5 or Western publishers handle new IPs, they invest a whole a lot up front and then keep investing.

Assassin's Creed was the fastest selling new IP for the entirety of last generation. They spent a fortune on the first game, and then an even bigger fortune on the second.

This generation, the two biggest new IPs (they argue over who is faster selling) are Watch Dogs and Destiny. Those games were incredibly expensive up front as well.

At minimum, I would ramp up spending immediately after the first game if I wanted the best chance of creating new, long lasting IPs with less budgetary risk.

If we look at what happened with Borderlands or The Witcher, games from developers who didn't have a ton of money to work with, they spent way more on the direct sequels to the games because they knew it was the right decision long term, and it has paid off incredibly well for them in the long term.

There is still opportunity to go back and revive a franchise anyway. Taking Dragon Age as an example, Dragon Age 2's sales tanked compared to the first game, but after investing $50+ million in Dragon Age 3, it became BioWare's fastest selling game ever by unit numbers and EA cited it about eight times in their financial report to explain why they were notably over expectations. However, given the risk aversion of this strategy in the first place, I wouldn't expect Square Enix to do something similar.

There is no doubt in my mind that the nx handheld will sell less overall than the 3ds and that developing for it will cost more than 3ds. That's where the danger lies.

With that said: developing for an HD console that has nearly no presence or success is even more risky unless your IP is meant almost solely for western audiences (where said console isn't tanking). Adding other consoles that do have a base (like PS3) certainly mitigates the risk but doesn't eliminate the massive uptick in development costs, which would still almost certainly be higher than a qhd handheld.

In Japan (and worldwide to some extent) you're probably not going to sell as many copies as you used to, but it's going to cost you more to make. This is why so many are looking at actual growth areas like mobile and PC

Are their any big Vita exclusives to look forward to this year?

I thought there was a strategy game and a RPG in the works , have they been cancelled !

I'm... not quite sure what you're referring to here

The biggest upcoming exclusives I can think of are KanColle Kai (which releases next month) and SaGa 2015, if that's still a thing (though personally, I think they might have changed that up to become multiplat with PS3/PS4).

Other than that, most of the big games Vita is getting are also on PS3/PS4 (Dragon Quest Builders/Heroes 2; God Eater Resurrection etc.)

Saga was the RPG I was talking about. I hope it's still being developed.

Is Langrisser Re:Incarnation also available for PC?

Indeed, If it had anything to do with Nintendo they would probably reschedule the conf due to Iwata passing imo.

D:

What would Square-Enix delay a press conference because of Iwata's passing?

Unless you're talking about the investor meeting, in which case there won't be any delay because there's no meeting for Q1.

***

By the way, here's something I've wanted to mention in the past.

Remember the eShop page for Splatoon mentionning "Product placement"? Well, turns out it's not because of the amiibo, but the Splatfest. Third Splatfest had players vote for one of two actual brand of noodles, while the fourth one (this week-end) will have players vote for two flavours of Kirin tea.

Now, quite obviously Nintendo has a deal with those companies (I doubt they're having advertisement for free)... I wonder if that's how they're planning to cover dev. costs for updates? I mean, since there's no microtransactions or anything, money has to come from somewhere. Usually publishers going down the free update rely on ongoing sales to cover for the costs of developing major updates, but it's quite limited on Wii U.

In any case, that product placement is quite clever... It's not too intrusive, only happens every once in a while, but is more effective than other form of advertising because there's no way players will miss it... even people who don't regularly play are bound to learn of it, due to the announcements.

As hopeful as I'd love to be, this is likely/almost certainly the case. It will depend heavily on how well Nintendo entices mobile gamers to their hardware and presents it to the general public.

I wonder if the fans of the game aren't unhappy with it or otherwise. I know my friends don't give a hoot and just pick what they like, but I do also know that some times people are very adverse to advertising getting into their things. Would be terrible to see good will squandered by shoving product placement down people's throats, but then again it is not actually all that intrusive (and I'd imagine they'd probably have run out of Splatfest ideas pretty damn fast without this) as you said. If it is paying for the updates, though, that's an interesting way of handling this as a whole.

- Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi for PS4 had a great start today. Pre-orders were low and she was worried about the performance of the game at first.
- The PS3 had a slow start today, but is expected to improve from now, since is 1000¥ cheaper than the PS4 version.
- Summer vacations started and Splatoon is moving actively again.
- The Witcher 3 is selling well too.

Yes. While there's still clearly money to be made in dedicated devices, it's less and less appealing as the days go by. Publishers can see where the road leads and try to act accordingly.

Now, this can certainly cause them to take different strategy. For example, Level 5 has retrenched their entire dedicated device line-up around their successful kids oriented line-up on Nintendo's handhelds, while Square Enix has decided to try their hand at selling Japanese games to Westerners again. However, both have made mobile cornerstones of their business given what's happening in the domestic market.

As hopeful as I'd love to be, this is likely/almost certainly the case. It will depend heavily on how well Nintendo entices mobile gamers to their hardware and presents it to the general public.

The issue here is the extension of the above. Publishers see where the market is heading and build their portfolio around that. For the NX, I'd expect publishers to take a cautious approach in terms of both volume and franchise choice, while investing notably in each individual entry, hoping to be a progressively bigger fish in a shrinking pond. While this makes the platform notably appealing to fans of those series, it lowers the amount of broadbase appeal it has to people who want a large variety of series or perhaps something new all together.

Japan also has an issue where gamers who like their franchises fall out the top vastly more quickly than in the West, and the new gamers replacing them don't have loyalty or fond memories of these brands. This is also why we often see series that appeal to people who are now 25-30+ target mobile, since that audience is still playing games there.

We've seen this pattern repeat with each launch this entire generation, so it's hard to imagine gen 9 will break the trend.

This reads like the new "is there any way wii u is not a grand success thread"

I didn't even mention the Wii U. I expect PS4 in japan to be somewhere around 5m by Q4 2017.

IF NX releases Q4 2016 and DQ is indeed a Q4 2017 game I expect NX to have a larger userbase than PS4 by the time.
3DS sold +5 million in it's first 12 months and it included one holiday (it was released in february in japan). It's first year wasn't even considered that successful.

I simply stated that the "it has zero userbase" while factually true is a non issue: a successful nintendo handheld can sell 5 million units if it includes 2 holidays, their last 2 handhelds did it.

Oh of course, I'm not going to argue that point. It's fairly clear cut how publishers are moving.

What I meant is that a lot depends on Nintendo's actions to attract and engage those other audiences, which is something that they seem to have proven capable of doing to a rather successful degree but how successful they'll be with the NX's goals, we don't know. Tapping audiences that most publishers haven't really managed to engage outside of mobile. This is what I meant when I said that the NX will largely depend on how Nintendo approaches their mobile initiative and how successful (or not) it is in attracting audiences back to their hardware (as well as how they put their product out in front of the general public and make it a wanted piece of hardware).

Nintendo, as the platformer holder, will need to try to branch out and gain new or old audiences to come to their hardware (which is effectively what the NX is as a product oriented in doing, with mobile as the target outside of the dedicated space), while other publishers double down on their strengths and fan-bases. The latter isn't necessarily bad, though, as it keeps attracted audiences engaged with good software as it would be downright impossible for Nintendo to produce everything for every audience at all times all on their own. For instance, as it is now, a large part of the RPG audience on the 3DS is being maintained by third parties (like Atlus) as well as some key/big hits here and there from Nintendo themselves. Kids/monster games are likewise supported by third party but also fed with big hits from Nintendo, etc.

Of course, they could also just throw it to the market like the Vita and watch it burn to the ground.

Heck, the only reason I even have hope for a decent to good future for the NX is from Splatoon's recent showings in what a good piece of unexpected, fresh software can do to mindshare even for a moribund piece of hardware. The overall size from 3DS to NX will no doubt contract barring some miracle, but I don't think a healthy steady-state is impossible to achieve.
Honestly I don't view attracting the mobile audience as a realistic goal. Those games are optimized for mobile devices and everyone already owns one outside of young children. Mobile devices are also way easier to cart around with you wherever you go, and chances are you're already doing so.

What I view mobile games on the NX as is a way to get publishers to release more content for the platform to keep current users engaged. Those could be users who are core gamers that refuse to engage with mobile gaming on a phone, or those who simply prefer using their dedicated device. The incentive for publishers is that these are people who are already known to monetize on games a they bought a dedicated device in the first place, and presumably are buying retail titles at one point or another.

Or, put more simply, I view mobile games on dedicated handhelds as a way to get more money out of existing users (and keep them more satisfied with the amount of game releases) as opposed to actually attracting any new customers.

Casual gamers are also going to be a hard draw given how they largely appear to have evaporated everywhere except phones, where they seem notably satisfied and have an incredible abundance of software aimed at them, with the vast majority of it being free to boot.

I don't mean it in some grand way, mind, I meant more of a possible draw (minor one) that can pull people from mobile gaming to dedicated. It is an easier sell to someone who likes mobile games if their mobile games carry over, and may want to dabble in bigger games as well. As you say, mobile in and of itself is impossible to "outdo" because it is far more convenient and everyone has a phone. I think the goal here isn't to try and compete with that directly (a fool's errand) and somehow win over the entire audience, but to introduce that audience to a venue of alternate/new hardware with that user base's games also being available as well as new experiences that are simply not available on a mobile platform.

The other part of the mobile objective is simply for Nintendo to make money off of that market, spread their brand, and so on, as any forward thinking company would want to do. Its not going to be some sort of magic bullet like the Wii.

As I said, "selling the hardware" is going to fall on Nintendo, and the NX with mobile considerations in mind would, to me, seem like a better sell to a mobile oriented/inclined audience than the aged 3DS at this point.

Splatoon moving actively again? Lol what wad it before then.
I guess it's going to higher this week.
no mention of yoshi being affected by school though. Oh well

I was mistaken last week thinking it was the start of summer vacation. I'm thinking it's going to be 30K+ if trends from last year(% increase in MK8 at the start of the summer vacation) is repeated with Splatoon, which seems pretty likely.

Witcher 3 is going to eventually sell 250k on PS4 in Japan - did Sony do any marketing for the title in Japan?

I think having mobile games on NX, if that is the plan, is about making sure the system has a robust lineup. Nintendo ha never lacked system sellers, even on the Wii U.

I do think there's a tangible benefit to making sure new emerging brands are present though. Publishers have tried to follow up Youkai Watch and Puzzle & Dragons Z on 3DS. On the flip side the lack of Minecraft on Nintendo systems has hurt quite a bit.

Kagari just informed me that it's actually this week's Jump that has more Dragon Quest Heroes 2 news, so presumably next week isn't that.

Chances of the rumored old DQ remake getting announced there too? I guess they may wait until DQVIII is out. But it should be out months before DQXI.

This of course if the rumors of DQXI/DQV PS family are true and it's not DQXI 3DS

Well, they announced DQ IV-V-VI on DS at the same time back then, and it doesn't seem SQEX is hiding its PS family support, so they might well announce the PS4 remaster anytime soon.

Yeh but so was Knack.

I assume other bundled games are counted as sales within Media Create as well? I know they did for the DQH bundle?

So why exclude bloodborne from the numbers. Is it because it' a digital code and not an actual download card/physical copy?

What was Knack? Digital or Physical?

Whats the new DQH2 news?

30./33. [PS4] Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar Games) {2014.12.11} - 1.411 / 181.566 (+23%)
38./41. [PS3] Grand Theft Auto V [Bargain Edition] (Rockstar Games) {2014.06.26} - 1.005 / 131.858 (+5%)

“Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twin Kings and the Prophecy’s End has a different world view from the previous game, and through that a new story will begin. Please expect a dramatic story to develop. The ‘giant monsters and crowds of monster-battle action’ that was so popular in the previous game is powered up, of course. There are new ways to play and additions, so please look forward to more news.”

Otherwise read as "We've been in development for four months."

If I remember correctly, even Koei said that it was only recently that the plans for DQH2 were actually drawn up after the success of the first title in pre-orders

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Square so active with the Dragon Quest IP lately.

2016 is the 30th Anniversary, that's the reason why we're getting such a huge push for the franchise in terms of games announced for the future.

Well, next Tuesday will be important.

I don't get why they announced it so soon. They could have announced DQ Builders in April instead and save DQHII for summer or fall if they absolutely had to have an announcement on April 1st.

I'm curious about when it'll release. VIII is August and Builders is Winter (which is most likely Feb 2016 or such). We don't have a date for Joker 3. I suspect one of the games without a date will be positioned for the holidays and perhaps that's why it was announced first? Either way it's looks like we're probably going to be getting DQ games at fairly close intervals leading all the way to DQXI, for this 30th anniversary.

Oh come on XB1, stop selling so many :( I only have 1 week left now to avoid losing a sub-100 sale bet with a friend.

Did not realise Batman would do well in Japan.

only had 2 weeks of physical minecraft vita sales to look at back then

Do you know how Bloodborne is being bundled with PS4s in Japan? Is it an actual code, pre-installed DL or an activation thing on Sony's end? I remember buying a PSPgo during a free game promo and I didn't get a code. Sony just added the game to my download list once I activated the system. If it's a similar story for Bloodborne on JPS4, I can maybe see the confusion.

That and they like money, so they're making more games in a franchise they haven't burned to the ground.

Well Matsuda might be better than Wada but he's already killed an IP.
RIP Bravely

As I said in my comments earlier, I expect a lot of their revivals and new IPs to go away given the outlined strategy, but that they seem to be content with the idea of trying a revolving carousel of products in search for hits that can roll through easily.

Similarly, the concept of Bravely Default (making a game that hearkens back to their older titles) appears to be the goal of Project Setsuna based on their statements so far, so they already have the next try in that business line in the hopper.

I'll believe in DQXI on 3DS until the bitter end :)

well, few days left until the end ;p

btw, everyone excited about DQXI PS4, but actually, if there will be a Vita version, that will be the huge one, imho.
could easily become the MH-psp situation
