They've already said they'll be selling NES titles on the 3DS VC.

Ah, yes I see now they talked about multiplayer being included when they get sold later this year, I missed that before. If they start selling PC-Engine titles on 3DS we could see the unpalatable situation where the same rom which can be bought once from PSN and used across PS3, PSP, and PSV will have to be bought twice from VC to be used on 3DS and Wii-U (even 3 times if you want to keep it on the original Wii too?).

Yes, but Nintendo has offered a transfer tool to move content since the DSi. The saves get lost in the transfer, though.

That's a missed opportunity then which doesn't bode well for Wii-U. There should have been an option to link the content to an account when transferring from DSi to 3DS. This whole problem could have been fixed by doing that for both 3DS from DSi and Wii-U from Wii.

There's now an issue with Sony expecting people to pay for the same PS1 ISOs on PS Suite that they already paid for on PSN. It's about time consumers and media started asking serious questions of these corporations about these ridiculous anti-consumer practices.

DS biggest week was 600k. Even if there was the supply, 70% higher than that is impossible.

And that's where you fail my friend. Nothing is impossible. Yes, I know (and knew) that the DS's highest week was 600K.

But the DS also didn't have this kind of a lineup before. The DS was never graced with a MH, and now we have MH, Mario, Mario Kart, and probably a few other things I'm missing, all very close to each other.

I think it very well can reach one million in one week, with very low sales the weeks thereafter because of stock issues.

Predictions:

Monster Hunter 3G : 700-800k
It's MonHun on a portable. It's not on a Sony portable, where I think a lot of the fanbase were expecting the next MH to appear on, but since it's based off Tri and not MHP3rd, I don't think it'll matter much. Also, I don't believe the 3DS has sold through enough HW for a 1m first week to happen yet. LTD will probably be past 3m regardless.

Super Mario 3D Land : 400-500k
It's 3D Mario, but it's closer to a 2D Mario than 64/Sunshine/Galaxy. Say 1.5m LTD.

TLoZ : Skyward Sword : 250-350k
It's a Zelda, but it's on the Wii, which is tailing out. LTD will probably be somewhere between 700-800k.

Mario Kart 7 : 550-700k
It's Mario Kart. LTD will be past 3m.

New Love Plus : 160-180k
It's going to be front-loaded. LTD will be 250-300k.

I think people are underestimating SM3DL. They're marketing it more closely to NSMB than Galaxy, putting heavy emphasis on 2d sections.

DS schedule for the end of 2005 was equally strong.

The only way 3DS could ever sell 1 million in a week would be if 2D Mario, MH4, a Dragon Quest spin-off, and a mainline Pokemon all come out for it on the same day.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

No.

That's not the entire picture of why it may sell 1m:

1. It's coming after a very successful predecessor, it may not be sustainable, but it will be frontloaded regardless.

This is why I say MK7 predictions being like 400k is pretty low. Nintendo brands experienced a boom during past years, they are much stronger now. 400k for a game that has sold like 4m and has practically no competitor, is a joke.

2. Although DS had a very strong line-up as well, but what it generally lacked was a AAA core game to attract demographic that eventually bought 20m PSP.

3DS receiving MH is like two consoles launching together in one form.

3. For circumstances, people have been holding off buying the console for several months, they will eventually give in.

This is the Famitsu software chart from December 19-25 2005, the week the DS sold almost 600k. (source)

All the DS games there are the "casual appeal" type, and none of them actually launched that week. The 3DS lineup is also very impressive, but I'm not sure it can top this.

I don't expect FFT-O to sell that well but I'm hoping for it to be a surprise hit.

Monster Hunter, Mario Kart, Super Mario, Fabstyle and Inazuma Eleven have casual appeal

DS 2005 lineup had more than the 3DS does I think. The 3DS games just appeal to a more hardcore appeal to them.

>5 million
Animal Crossing and Brain Training 2
>3 million
Mario Kart DS and Brain Training
>2 million
Nintendogs
>1 million
Big Brain Academy and Tamogotchi Connection

3DS has 3, maybe 4 million sellers and I don't think they will be in the same ballpark as Animal Crossing and Brain Training 2.

Edit: Spiegel, you are right that those games have casual appeal. They pretty much have to. In general if games sell over 1mil, they are going to have some mass market appeal. They aren't nearly as casual as Animal Crossing and Brain Training were though.

I wonder if FF-0 has the potential to be the first non-MH million seller on the PSP.

I'd say LBX: Boost has a higher chance.

Which is to say neither will break a million.

DS success that December wasn't based only on 3-4 games.

Meanwhile, 3DS's success this holiday WILL be based on 3-4 games, so it doesn't have nearly as much potential. 400-450k is the highest we'll see any week, and most weeks will be <150k.

DS success that December wasn't based only on 3-4 games.
Amazed at the software and hardware numbers.
these are truly some phenomenal numbers..
i hope we get to these impressive levels again soon..

Meanwhile, 3DS's success this holiday WILL be based on 3-4 games, so it doesn't have nearly as much potential. 400-450k is the highest we'll see any week, and most weeks will be <150k.

But the 3ds does have several other titles that'll sell solidly not just the 3 sure thing million sellers

There's also Rocket Slime, Ace Combat, Love Plus and girl's rpg right?

Not saying it'll do a million or anything close, but there's more games than just those 3

Thanks for clearing that up. The DS certainly had a stronger games library going into the 2005 holiday season than the 3DS will. There were some noteworthy games even outside that week's top 50, like SM64DS, Kirby CC, WarioWare, Advance Wars DS, Jump SS, Ouendan, etc. that really solidified the DS library.

Since FabStyle is mentioned retailer impressions at the meeting were very bad for the 3D

Predictions

[PSP] Final Fantasy Type-0 (Square Enix) - 567.890
[WII] Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Nintendo) - 210.987
[PS3] The Idolmaster 2 (Bandai Namco Games) - 56.789

I still think Biggest week will be 500k, but the mon hun launch and the next week will both be pretty good, even with Vita launching

If you're going back to older releases, 3DS also has more stuff like Nintendogs, Zelda, Layton, etc. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see some of them charting come December either.

I suppose I better give this a go

[PSP] Final Fantasy Type-0 (Square Enix) - 389,000
[WII] Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Nintendo) - 170,000
[PS3] The Idolmaster 2 (Bandai Namco Games) - 72,000

Still, not to the extent of the DS library. 3DS software releases have been pretty slow, although that'll change over the next two months.

Zelda and nintendogs will be charting for sure, if layton pops up again this week (with the inevitable pink bump) then it could do for the holidays too

DS phat can play GBA games, 3DS can play DS games. What were GBA releases in 2005 and what are DS releases in 2011?

One million for the 3DS in one week in Japan? That is pretty much impossible indeed. I know that the 3DS holiday lineup is very good, and the 3DS is also the cheapest priced hardware out there. But with the Vita coming up, i just cant see it. I also think that some people might go for a PS3 as well. This is the first holiday season with the 25k yen pricetag. The PS3 installbase is also relatively low, so there are many potential consumers out there who still dont own a PS3.

DS also had 3 more months of releases versus 3DS. And 3DS has digital releases on top of that.

Regarding the software that was released from nov-dec for ds 2005 it seems a bit stronger than 3ds nov + dec2011.
But what 3ds really seems to lack (as others have already stated) is the evergreen/casual titles that were released before november 2005 and still sold amazing in its second christmas period.
Title Sales 1 Week in Dec'05 Min / Max
Brain Age 1 (2005-05-19) 33.000 / 160.000
Nintendogs (2005-04-21) 19.000 / 88.000
Big Brain Academy (2005-06-30) 24.000 / 94.000
Tamagotchi 47.000 / 165.000

i can't imagine one of the games that are already released for 3ds right now doing this kind of numbers.

+ this was already ds second christmas

I think 3DS could have four straight weeks (or maybe 3/4) > 400K, which would top DS, but it won't have a 1m week.

Dec 5-11, 2011 - MH3G's release + bundle
Dec 12-18, 2011 - Probably down from previous, but not by a lot considering New Year's runup. See MHP3/PSP sales in Dec-2010. (this could be a < 400K week)
Dec 19-25, 2011 - Biggest week of year, usually
Dec 26, 2011-Jan 1, 2012 - Historically down from previous week a bit

DS probably would've had three straight > 400K weeks if it weren't for shortages the week of BT2's release.
