Still though, it'd be the worst opening of the series since Call of Duty 4, worse than Battlefield 1 even.

Battlefield is on the rise unlike Call of Duty. This year's entries should be closer than before.

Lol, Gust. Their sales keep flip flopping to make me go between worrying about them and thinking they're fine.

A few years ago Atelier Shallie flopped and Ar no Surge did even worse, then they bounced back with Sophie doing respectable number and Yoru no Nai Kuni being a really good debut for a new IP.

Now Atelier is heading back to sub-Shallie numbers and I'm not confident about Yoru no Nai Kuni given the hack job they did with Vita version of the first game undoubtedly putting people off the second. Plus they've no longer got a "let's get double dippers with Plus ports" strategy.

Better hope Blue Reflection brings the goods. Or everything gets an NS Plus port.

As I am on mobile, where did XenoVerse 1 open?
[PS3] Dragon Ball Xenoverse (Bandai Namco, 01/29/15) – 44,221 / 116,921
[PS4] Dragon Ball Xenoverse (Bandai Namco, 01/29/15) – 34,690 / 84,261
Total: 78,911 / 201,182

I guess PS4 exclusivity counteracts the Dragon Ball Super effect.

Only one question, why MS do not discontinue X1 in Japan ? It's basicly dead since a long time.

They haven't started doing Steam ports yet have they?

I'd expect that before Switch releases.

P.S. If possible, I'd like to go a bit deeper, on the matter of initial support for recent platforms, in the next future. It is an interesting topic, and a more informed comparison could be helpful to give a better context for posts on the matter.
Since I'd like to make this analysis, I would like to hear your opinion on the matter about

1) The timeframe to consider to judge the initial support

I was thinking about exactly the first 12 months since launch (so, for example: November of the year "X" to October of the year "X+1"), but maybe you feel 18 months would be a more reliable period of time to consider?

2) What games should we consider as "sizable support"

Do we feel that 100,000 copies sold LTD is a decent minimum in order to consider a game released in the aforementioned timeframe as a sign of initial, confident support?

On tablet and lazy so I'll just quote
Level-5 just put a comment about their involvment with Nintendo Switch :

They seems to have already started development but on something bigger than just a port for the launch.

Source
So it looks like Level 5 won't be on Switch at launch and isn't looking to port stuff.

Sounds like publishers sure are confident

Don't see how that implies no ports (I assume you are including multiplats with that terms as well). "Finding how to get the most out of it" is just the usual, meaningless PR spiel.

I do think that Switch is an unexpectedly difficult proposition for a company like Level 5, though. L5's is targetting for the kids market, but so far it seems like Nintendo won't aim at that market initially (likely because Switch is plain and simply too expensive). So, what is a company like Level 5 supposed to do?

(I'm not convinced yet a 30,000 yen Switch would be particularly appealing to other audiences either, though, so I'm hoping Switch will launch for considerably less than currently speculated.)

I don't know what he's thinking. Publishers have pushed to make the PS4 happen with very mixed results, closer to the performance of a Vita than of a leading platform. If you want to continue making games with high production values that a lot of people are ready to spend a lot of money upfront for, the Switch is basically the only hope left. If they take a wait-and-see approach, they're gonna blow it. They must feel great about mobile to not even come out with a port for the Switch launch.

Given that Nintendo puts out a large number of family titles I don't think that would be an issue for L5.

Oregano, please, stop. Your doom is unhealthy, try to be less catastrophic with whatever news comes up, otherwise I will start thinking a part of you really wants to see this device fail and catches up each and every negative news or tries to paint negatively neutreal news not even regarding the console (i.e. Bravely possible announcement --> Bravely on mobile and PS4 and not on Nintendo consoles). I simply cannot accept this pueril hysterism you've been showing for a while, trying to paint a picture just with black and white, while the reality of things is made of several shades of grey. Also, the answer was when he was asked about Switch games in general, not in relation to a port of Ninokuni II or of anything else, so there's your colouring stuff as it suits your narrative again. It's just a bad behaviour to have which hurts people who try to be as rational as possible when in conversations. For the love of God, stop with the doom and gloom.

Then the whole thing is a nonstarter and Nintendo has not only doomed themselves but also the entire Japanese console market. It's pretty much simple as that.

You might be right about the "Finding the best way to get the most out of it" but that's the kind of thing we've heard about Nintendo platforms for years. Switch seems as standard as they come and we're still hearing it.

I don't know what he's thinking. Publishers have pushed to make the PS4 happen with very mixed results, closer to the performance of a Vita than of a leading platform. Their sales may be up and down in Japan but I suspect any decision to put their games on Steam for the west will be made independently of performance of their games in their home region.

You don't wait for a domestic bomba and then decide to expand to Steam overseas to recoup losses.

It doesn't matter much what Nintendo puts out when Switch is priced out of the kid's markets price range. It's one of the most price-sensitive markets out there and in times of kids moving to F2P smartphone games it's harder than ever to convince parents of buying a console for quite a bit of money.

It's obviously too early to make any kind of definive statements before Nintendo shares its plans and all facts in January, though.

I don't think we can say for a fact that the device is too expensive for children when we don't know the cost and even then what's the ceiling for that market in regard to price?

Who's saying anything for a fact? I used "it seems" and "current speculation" in my initial post for a reason. It's all based on speculation, whether or not that turns out true is something we'll see in a couple months.

I don't think there's a good way to spin one of the 3DS' biggest supporters saying they'll make Switch games only when they figure out how to make the most of it. The fact that they're not at launch is not that bad(although they were one the big guns at 3DS launch), it's the other stuff Hino said that is disconcerting.

I think he's right to find that quote worrying. Compare Ubisoft's or Square-Enix's or Image and Form's statements when asked about the Switch with Hino's. You're supposed to show excitement and faith in the product. Level-5 is a major 3DS supporter, you'd expect them to drum up excitement and be there on day one. Hopefully we'll see more enthusiasm in January.

What's the issue? Level-5 released a whole 1 game for Nintendo's last home console that I remember (Yokai Dance). Figuring out Switch is more than they did for Wii U!

Actually, Yokai Watch Dance was developped and published by Ubisoft if I'm not mistaken. So Level-5 never did release anything on Wii U.

First, LordKano went and saw the original article, which shows a slightly different wording

http://www.vandal.net/noticia/1350683037/level5-ni-no-kuni-ii-no-sera-un-simple-rpg/
The original source for the interview is more precise (if you speak spanish, that is). Hino said that they have the "intention" of putting games on Switch. They aren't in a "wait and see" approch, they will support the Switch. But not at launch.
Second, while "planning" could hide a wait-and-see approach, "having the intention" shows less of that approach. Anyway, I fear we're taking way too literally the "trying the best way to get the most out of it"-like wording, it's quite PR-ese and it's probably Hino's attempt at trying to not say too much about their efforts, outside of the fact they won't be at launch and that they are on the platform (and there's not even the need for "planning" / "having intentions" for that: Level 5 features on the partners slide as well, so they don't need to come out and say they are on it like, for example, Image&Form).

Level-5 in particular I think has a lot to lose if the Switch only receives a lukewarm response.

Warnings about quality of the port from the producer; lack of footage available of the game prior to launch and videos popping up all over the place with single-digit FPS didn't keep Vita owners from buying SAO in droves, I see. I just don't know what to make of that.

Comparatively, Berserk seems to be one of Koei-Tecmo's better efforts for the platform and it sells bugger all. But to be fair it's not selling anything notable on PS4 either.

I... don't know what to make of those WoFF numbers. Not a disaster but not a good result either.

Also, if anyone's interested about performance of past Neo Atlas games, this is all I can find:

383 PS1 Neo Atlus 25,823 / 87,452
934 PS1 Neo Atlus II 11,577 / 11,577

Minorly popular and nothing. Wondering why on earth it got revived.

P.S. Crows is just... more than 12 months in development and a cancelled Vita version for this? =/

I actually expect DBXV2 to be down on its predecessor worldwide as well. Seems like it was not nearly as ambitious as I once thought.

What was Level 5's commitment to PS4 pre-launch again?

Since this week, Final Fantasy XV is starting to have more presence at stores. The Luna Edition is also being advertised, but it's not that popular, though.
Regarding pre-orders, at Traders Akiba they have a big ad outside about Cyber Dimension Neptunia. Sofmap Akiba, has some stand outside the store to show Akiba's beat. And Yakuza, Fate and Gundam were popular also. On 3DS, Sukiyaki is not doing hot, though.
Nintendo surely got a good effect after Switch presentation and their meetings with retailer. Famicom Mini has some space dedicated. Sushi and Tempura, and some little shops being price-slashed again.

The Luna Edition is also being advertised, but it's not that popular, though.
Was this overpriced, or am I thinking of a different SKU with a weird mark-up?

Nintendo surely got a good effect after Switch presentation and their meetings with retailer. Famicom Mini has some space dedicated.
Hooray.

Sushi and Tempura, and some little shops being price-slashed again.
Poor Sammy.

I anticipated this weeks ago. It was expected after the Sukiyaki announcement. The timing is right, good for them!

This fact remains: Yokai Watch 3 is currently the best selling game of the year and will likely rank in the year's end Top 3.

Poor your faves.

A new PopoloCrois game was announced, this time for mobile: http://gematsu.com/2016/10/popolocrois-monogatari-smartphone-game-announced-january-2017

Following up on WoFF and the West, World of Final Fantasy debuted at #11 in the UK, and even spot #4 was not particularly impressive this week.
I wonder if it's actually new or a Fantasy Life style adaptation.

So COMGnet pre-orders begin for YW3 Sukiyaki. Oh boy, somewhat nervous cause of the low number, I have to worry about sales for another YW game in Japan again.

For the Sushi/Tempura bundle, I have plenty of questions. Will that count towards total YW3 sales. Or will it be its own sales thing being measured? And would each copy sold count as one unit or two units?

BECAUSE we haven't seen the games yet.

The moment they drop the new MH, AC and PKMN it wil slay Japan just like the 3DS did.
Yup. January is going to be crucial for Ninty..... but well, just having Splatoon, AC, PKMN,MH, Mario Kart, DQ will make Switch looks like it only appealed to Japan again lol.^_^

This time there will be only one Nintendo platform.

There won't be a handheld version cannibalizing the console version.

And Switch is a handheld.

So yes. It will dominate Japan, as long it has the software.
The Switch is too big to be called a portable, and that's from a perspective of someone who is now sitting on the metro in China and takes the metro to and from work everyday , fitting the description of the Japanese lifestyle.

If the Switch succeeds it will be because of the software, you're right but that will be so despite its hardware not because of it.
