Not anywhere
You know, if we extend this out, it actually puts out an interesting scenario.

Traditionally, the decline in the Japanese dedicated device market has been viewed from the perspective of lifestyle fit. Handhelds were seen as working better for Japanese lifestyles than consoles, and mobile devices were seen as working better for Japanese lifestyles than handhelds. As handheld games became sufficiently high enough quality across a wide range of genres around the DS/PSP era, Japanese gamers migrated to handheld devices, even if it meant trading some amount of perceived quality. The same happened with mobile devices usurping handheld devices 8-10 years later.

However, it's actually entirely possible that Japanese gamers just felt that handheld games on the DS/PSP were flat out better than the offerings on consoles during the late PS2 and full PS3 era. Similarly, they might view mobile games as being better designed and more fun than anything consoles or handhelds have to offer today.

Who is to say that Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light simply isn't just the far superior game to Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3, causing the latter to decline? Maybe Brave EXVIUS is way more entertaining than FF15, helping to push FF15 notably down even in terms of sales versus install base. And maybe Dragon Quest of the Stars just turns out to be better and more fun than Dragon Quest XI, causing declines there

I don't think those would be popular opinions here, but we actually don't have much opinion data from people who have dumped consoles and handhelds in favor of mobile.
In an anecdotal perspective the general buzz surrounding Fate/Grand Order seems to be far livelier than any games released on dedicated device, except Pokemon. I feel people talking F/GO the same way they were talking about, say, Final Fantasy X years ago. F/GO and others like Granblue feels like a living community with new stuff to talk every month while the talk of console games died a few weeks after its release.

And yet 4M is a decline from the general sales of Pokemon prior to 3DS, aka over 5M.
Sun/Moon will sell more than X/Y. Is 3DS situation now better than 4 years ago?

Pokemon on 3DS are 4m+ million sellers, Pokemon on DS and GBA were 5m+ million sellers. Does this make 3DS weaker than GBA or GBA comparable to DS?

Hmm i can actually atest to this. Monster Strike, Puzzle and Dragon, DQ light, FF Exvius, Chain Chronicle, Hortensia Saga, Shironeko Project, Idolmaster,FGO,Love Live, and Grandblue Fantasy all seems to provide better experiences to japanese gaming taste compared to the current console gaming.

How is Persona 5 an outlier when it had a bunch of integrated social elements in it? They expand on stuff they already experimented with on Catherine and Japanese gamers love it. When you pick choices in the game, you can always see the distribution of choices other players made. There's a connected feeling of playing a game with everyone online, even if it is a single player RPG.

Social doesn't always mean multiplayer or sharing customized towns and characters.
Oh, I didn't actually know about that feature. That's really cool!

I wanna see how people consider DQ series a guaranteed 4 million seller when the past sales appear otherwise.

What makes 30th anniversary special compared to 10, 15, 20 and so on. If you think the 30th anniversary will provide a boost in sales then .. lol.

FF also had several anniversaries so far and I doubt that had any impact on the sales of the series.

There is a lot of space between guaranteed 4m seller and barely able to sell 2m on 3DS. Fact is the last 2 main single player DQ games have sold around 4m. There is no reason to believe that the series would tank as much on a system that is able to deliver +4m software seller.

Only 2m on 3DS would make it one of the biggest flops of this decade. This would be like expected Sun/Moon to only sell 2m when the last new main titles sold way more - its very unlikely.

No one has said it will only sell 2 million :)

I have already said that it should be able to get closer to 3 million but going above 3 million to something like 3.5 million or 4 million won't be possible. I don't see 4 million even if we count all versions.

2 million on 3ds wouldn't surprise me, I'd expect maybe 2.5m 3ds 1-1.5m switch 6-900k ps4

There is no way the Switch version will outsell the PS4 version or anywhere close to 1.5m. 3m 3DS and +500-750k combined for the HD versions is more likely.

The 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI will probably also be noticeably cheaper than the PS4 version (and maybe Switch version). While price isnt everything, i think this will help it get closer to 4 million.

When DQXI sells the usual 4m in Japan wait for this:

"If it wasn't the state of Japanese market it would sell other 4."
Have that been an arguement for other games that has performed better than expected? Just wondering.

..and why wont that be possible ?

I think it really depends on time of release. The game is pegged for 2017 but it could get delayed. The longer is gets delayed the lower 3DS sales will be and the higher Switch sales will be.

I still think DQXI should have been a 3DS game modelled on DQIX released a few years ago and this DQ should be DQXII.

Yeah this does nothing for me - so DQXI cant sell well because the last main game sold so well ? Erm Okay.

Right now im going by what Horii said - a release planned for 2017 and all 3 versions being out by the same time. They would have to delay the game for a long time for the Switch version to have any real impact on the 3DS performance. You will be able to get the Game + 3DS console for less than15k Yen by the time its out ...same combo on Switch/PS4 will at least cost twice as much. I expect a lot of customer to get their cheap DQXI fix via a 3DS purchase.

The DQXI 3DS version looks really good - so i dont see alot of reason for people to go the more expensive route, unless they are double dipping or are more hardcore anyway.

I find it weird that there insisting on releasing PS4 and 3DS versions at the same time. It's obvious PS4 version is holding back the release of 3DS version.

Sigh. Are people ignoring what I said regarding the long wait from one mainline game to the next.

DQIX was also the peak of the series that was released around 8 years ago. It set new sales record at that time.

How are people expecting DQXI to match that figure or inch closer to it when the gaming landscape has changed a lot in these 8 years.

Dragon Quest fans are delusional if they think the franchise can still manage 4 million sales without a miracle.

Yeah this does nothing for me - so DQXI cant sell well because the last main game sold so well ? Erm Okay.
That's cute. So FFXV should have sold well since the last mainline game sold so well?

No one interest at the fate of host club fantasy XV, only few fragments of hardcore gaming hobbyist like us.

But DQ has had planted deep roots into many kids/girls/normies in Japan.

True, I expect the 3DS to make up the bulk of sales regardless but the longer into the Switch's lifespan it releases the more people will have upgraded in which case the difference in cost will only be a few thousand Yen at most.

I find it weird that there insisting on releasing PS4 and 3DS versions at the same time. It's obvious PS4 version is holding back the release of 3DS version.
I think it all comes down to Square Enix's wider strategy. They publicly talked about wanting to save consoles and it's obvious that they were prioritizing PS4. Releasing the 3DS version of DQXI earlier devalues DQXI on PS4.

Different series and FFXV isnt on system with a +20m userbase.

I agree - we will just have to wait when the version are actually coming out and what the consoles will cost at this point. If the Switch is quite affordable i could see people upgrading sooner to Switch because they want a better looking experience on the Go, while also having access to the Big screen experience.

If the rumors are true we might see Pokemon Stars and DQXI hit Switch Q4 2017 - would be really interesting to see how those perform compared to similar titles on the established platforms.

On an unrelated note Nintendo are being quite blatant:

Actually the ads for Pokémon Sun/Moon on the side of buses here in the UK have a quote from the Metro in big writing saying it's "The perfect follow up to Pokémon Go".

NDS userbase when DQIX released was around 27 million and the game opened to 2.3 million.

You are saying that a lower userbase here will offer better sales?
No ? At +20m installed base the userbase isnt a limiting factor anymore for 99% of the games out there. So 22m, 25m or 27m wouldnt make a big difference - if the product is appealing enough +3/4m sales can be achieved.

DQ main games have been top sellers on every system they were released for the last decades i dont think this will change on 3DS.

Ok, i see. I guess its not too far fetched to say that those games could have sold better many years ago, but maybe not tons more.

How much did MHX end up selling by the way?
Around 3.1 for MHX and 3.25 for Yo-kai Watch 2.

In case of MHX, no game has managed to reach the height of the PSP releases, two of which were above 4 million while none are on 3DS.

Which again proves my point how it will be hard to replicate the success of DQIX again.

What it proves is that MHX wasn't a main entry that far exceeded expectations for Capcom and retailers and drove 3DS hw for entire holiday season.

Sukiyaki hasn't survived the Weekend. It's sold out everywhere.

What it proves is that MHX wasn't a main entry that far exceeded expectations for Capcom and retailers and drove 3DS hw for entire holiday season.
My post has nothing to do with sales success of MHX. I didn't call it a failure.

Of course, it might have exceeded the exceptions of the developer but I was just pointing out how no Monster Hunter has managed to hit 4 million on 3DS in retail sales.

The big problem of 2016 was Q3. I believe (as I say every January last years and I'm proven wrong) that 2017 will be better.
Well, I was talking about week 52 compared to week 51. But, I agree with you. Q3 was quite awful. 2017 has the chance to stop the decline not because Switch, but more in terms of the release of a new console. Something fresh that I'm sure japanese players will like a lot.
