Not sure how they will even pull those numbers with these "shortages" in the US. Especially since they never bested the 360 in the US for any month in the quarter. Japan has had some decent upside for awhile but nothing to push that close.
Yup, they are looking like they will hit a billion in net profit for the fiscal which is an amazing feat for the division. I'm not sure they have ever come close to that.

Attachment rate is deceptive. It is easier for a gaming system to have higher software attachment rate when sales of the system are slower (360) since new owners bring down the attachment rate. The faster the system sells (Wii) the harder to have higher attachment rates. It takes time for system owners to build up a gaming library.
Sales numbers in terms of absolute numbers is more relevant.

It's been one hell of a gen. Nintendo is making out like a bandit while MS and Sony wail on each other in a war of attrition. Can't wait for the future.

All I could think about after reading the thread title was the fact that almost exactly one year ago Nintendo was announcing 50 million Wii's sold worldwide.
Which makes me think Sony will eventually announce 30 million PS3's sold worldwide , or it'll be the year of PS3 and we'll hear 60 million.

Not really I figure according to others they have had some of those same issues in Europe as well although I'm sure MS is doing just fine there in comparison to Sony as they have this gen.

As for Nintendo, never thought another console would be beating PS2 numbers. Then again never thought Sony would be 3rd place either, really amazing generation.

If we think about it this way...my impression was over Xmas that after Xmas, into the last week of Dec, there was very little PS3 stock around in the US (and perhaps also in Japan). Stock that was being shipped was being sold very quickly, it wasn't hanging around and thus there likely wasn't a huge reserve of stock built up going into the New Year.
In Q1 in the US and Japan alone Sony sold ~1.5m units.
I think it's a decent bet most of those units shipped in that same quarter given the apparent stock situation at the end of the year.
Factor in Europe and the other countries, and a shipment figure in Elios's range doesn't seem so crazy.
2.2m is what Sony needs to hit their projection for the full year, and FWIW, Sony execs have sounded a lot of confidence about hitting that projection even while talking about the supply issues they've had in the quarter. I think going beyond 2.2m units may be a bit optimistic of Elios simply because I think Sony's finance's have likely meant they couldn't burst through their projection (at a greater loss on hardware than forecast).
Remember - supply issues simply means not shipping enough to meet demand. It doesn't mean shipping a low number of units. Sony could well have shipped 2.2m units in the quarter and had 'supply problems'.
