Microsoft: 40 Million Xbox 360 Consoles Sold

LosDaddie said:
Nah, just ignore them whenever they post because it's known they are little more than shills for their favorite console. Many of these fanboys were already known (to GAF vets), so one could already predict what their reaction to the X360's success would be.

It should be clear why. Because their favorite console is no longer #1.... and no longer dictating the type of games being developed.

A fanboy complaining about fanboy's! :lol

Not msure man, all the prices were just "dropped" in the fall after PS3 announced it's price drop. The Aracade went down to $199 and the "Elite" went down to $299 to compete directly with the PS3 Slims at the same price.

No, Arcade went down to $199 in September of 2008. And like I sad, Elite did go down to Premium's price point, but the price point itself remained the same. You didn't pay less, you got more (120 GB of hard drive space instead of 60 GB; unfortunately, that's also when they removed the HDMI cable).

Yep, those SEGA lunatics should really know their place after 10 years, Segata better tell them to fall back because...

I miss Wollan, Private Hoffman, Huelen and others, you know.. fun fanboys. The type that doesn't count pixels.

Well they were certainly better at their craft than the current crop we have today.

The real question; what about Snah? :lol

Even though Private Hoffman and I were not best buds I kind of loved the debate to be honest.

Snah's picture looked exactly like an annoying guy I went to college with and shared a suite... and I'd read his posts in his annoying voice...

Man I lurked here for nearly 2 years before being a member...

Sometimes I wish I had a time machine to 2005... the fact that this situation exists is a total failure on SONY's part. I'm sure SONY was pitching to their share-holders that in 4 years they might overtake MS.

Well, I would rather have seen Microsoft not rush out the XBox 360 at all costs (bad hardware quality / built design).

Sony did not want to release a PS2.5, they wanted the Cell as well as a Blu-Ray drive in there. I think from a technology perspective and from a business perspective it made a lot of sense. The format war with HD DVD was resolved much quicker I think due to the PS3 and first party developers are taking good advantage of Blu-Ray technology, multi-platform devs are struggling to fit modern games on DVD for the 360 (so resort to sacrifices and that shows).

I almost forgot about Olimario, all the fun we've had...

Went down like a champ too, an N-bot trading nude pictures of his girlfriend for a PSP of all things. :lol

if you went out and bought another when when you are in line with a free one, i'd have to say that's pretty stupid. I'd also have to say that the average joe schmoe consumer is not going to do something like that when he has a free 360 on the way.

GBA, DS, PSP, PS2, and PS3 all have second (and soemtimes third) revisions that surely lead to at least as much double dipping as any RROD issue, and yet I don't see those sales threads consumed with all this conspiracy wonk bullshit.
I've worked in retail electronics since 2006. A lot of people have just bought new 360s instead of getting a replacement from Microsoft. They did this even after I told them they could get free ones. This happened frequently, as is a few times a week. If it's happening in my relatively small area, I'm sure it's a pattern replicated across the country.

I don't think they're stupid for doing so either. I'd rather buy a new one than get a refurb. Those things don't have the best reputation.

Did they buy all new games with it too?

Everyone always talks about the Xbox 360 as being poorly made, but still to this day I've gone through more NES systems than any other system, I've gone through 7... sure the one time I put my hamster in the system was my fault... but there were no warranties back then.

Alrighty, I'll ake your word for it, but that's not how it worked at the largest retailer in the world.

The X360 has been the most-faulty console I've ever owned (OH NOES!! There I go being a fanboy again :lol ). I'm on #4, but MS has replaced every one thus far. Only downside being the $10 UPS shipping boxes I've had to buy. If they had not done so, I'd probably be a PS3/Wii "only" gamer.

Damn, I really need to stop being so fanboyish :lol

Yeah, I quit going through MS when I kept getting back refurbs manufactured in 2006 or 2007. I'd rather buy a brand new arcade and use my same HDD than mess with MS's shit.

The 360 is now pulling profitable quarters but does anyone know how much their net loss is with the 360? I would also like to know their net loss with the original Xbox?

Thanks in advance.

PS3 vs 360 until last year (aligned launches):

Congrats to Microsoft for shipping 40.2 million consoles, but one has to consider at what cost. RRoD and popular Microsoft published games not seeing (or very late) PC releases including Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Halo 3 and soon even Alan Wake. PC gaming seems to be suffering because of the XBox 360.

It will be interesting to see if PS3 sales have been able to push beyond 36 million last quarter as expected (despite the shortages in Europe and North America). That would put the PS3 ~6 million ahead of XBox 360 with aligned launches.

Not bad for an overpriced, underpowered games console lacking games! :lol

This is too subtle a joke for gaf.

Everyone I know had broken PS2's, and ended up buying another one instead of sending it in for repair. Literally everyone. Therefore, the Nintendo Gamecube was the real winner of last gen and it sold the most, since most of the PS2's were replacements.

Am I doing this right? :lol

See, even my tag is better than theirs. <3

You don't have to take my word for it, I just gave you the direct link to Major Nelson's blog confirming that. Or you could use google.

Special retailer promotions are a different thing entirely, they are not official price cuts.

D.Lo said:
It's worldwide, and a shipped attach ratio, so yes it includes bundled stuff.

From the Microsoft presentation, it just gives the number, which is suspiciously exactly the NPD attach rate. i.e. It's most likely the NPD attach rate, and we have no real visibility into shipped software for the 360.

You know, Wal-Mart's the largest retailer in the world, and that is how it worked. Wal-Mart didn't keep their prices higher for some reason after the price drop in September 2008.

I never understood the whole fanboy/favorite console thing. Not to the point of fighting over it anyway. The only way I'd ever be that loyal to a product or brand is if it's making me money. Even then, J. Allard back in the day even mentioned that he played all the consoles. To me, that's a true gamer. You don't have to own them all but at least be opened to them all.

Who the fuck let MikeB/SamBa out of the SPU thread?

What a depressing thread, it's like people don't want a Microsoft console to sell. :/

you too, you unappreciative bastard. real Shinobi comes with a reset button that you have to stick a pen in so you can see all possible sprite positions. that "game" that you wanted couldn't hold a candle to it.

Ok seriously... WTF are you talking about? The MSRP and price of entry for the 360 has been $199 for over a year and a half. Please back up what you are saying or stop saying it.

PS2/360 get a pass as the corporations stood behind their product.

Sony repaired my PS2 twice, for free. Well after it was out of warranty. You could get Sony to repair a PS2 for free with some finagling.

MS admitted to it's hardware problems and backed their product.

Sony camp still denies any problems with PS3 and you get socked with the $150 Sony Tax to keep playing games. :|

My parent's PS3 (that is used just as a Blu Ray player) was fixed for free and without any problems from Sony.

Thunder Monkey said:
I didn't have the same experience with Sony. My PS2 was barely a year out of warranty and I was told pretty succinctly "Our policy is to charge for repairs." $175 to repair a system I'd bought for $350 (with Ridge Racer). I got pissy, told the person on the line "Sony's lost a loyal customer." they responded with "Sorry sir."

I've been thinking about getting a PS3 or PSP... but then I remember that bullshit and I just go back to thinking fuck 'em.

If your product was out of warranty, what's there to complain about? I guess I only expect the manufacturer to fix something while it's still under warranty.

So, Wii shipped won't pass PS360 shipped this quarter. If Wii is, say, 4 million, and PS3 hits 36 mill LTD as seems expected, it makes it 71.4 vs 76.2. If Wii is 5 million and PS3 only hits 35, 72.4 vs 75.2, we're getting damn close.

Next quarter is possible, but most likely calendar Q3 2010. And it will blow past by calendar Q4.

I wouldn't be so sure. 360 sales should pick up with the slim/Natal/price drop. PS3 sales could also pick up with a price drop/move. Of course Nintendo could drop the price as well and reach the milestone, but it's possible that the Wii might never reach 50% marketshare.

D.Lo said:

Where does it say it's worldwide, shipped or that it includes bundled stuff?

Anyone know 360 sales for the United States?

I would add up all the NPD numbers, but I don't know if they cover North America or just the U.S.

I know for a fact that they've been sold for $299 a piece due to the shortages at the GameCube Hut.
