Some people say TLS is average, whats wrong with it?
Some people are disappointed because it's not an RPG, but I think that's perfectly fine. Unlike some people I don't get offended when developers want to forego a lot of the arbitrary, especially in console RPGs, trappings from time to time. Although some of these attempts really need to have better subsystems to prop these progressive attempts up a bit better. It cribs it's school of design more from Mass Effect than anything, but it doesn't quite have the chops to accomplish what it sets out to do, nor a lot of what makes Mass Effect a very palatable series. Combat can range from fun and nuanced to clunky and chaotic, narrative is fairly standard fare, but serviceable and has it's moments, nothing really else to prop it up.
I guess ultimately enjoyable but uneven and undisciplined would be a good way to put a lot of it.
In terms of presentation, I think the art is wonderful, although the in game transition of it is a bit... lacking...? Both in execution and polish (like animation) but it's not poor or anything. Music, however, is the first time I've actually been disappointed with a soundtrack :lol I want real Uematsu, not someone elses awkward arrangements of his tunes. This really annoyed me, personally, but I'm a fan so it's a more personal complaint.
I disagree with anyone who would say it's a poor game, or even average, although I had my mood swings with it. It's pretty fun for what it is and I still enjoyed it overall, but disappointing is the way to put it. I def do think it's the worst of the Mistwalker console trio. However, I would want them to keep trying to go along this road, as Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon did what they set out to do and I don't want an entire stable of that.
Mistwalker seems a bit sketchy right now, so I'm basically just hoping they get to make something of substance on a console again, period. A Wii U follow up along the same lines, but expanded and with some lessons learned would be a great goal.
