Question...anyone's female significant others having wrist problems after giving birth? My wife is sort of a twig with presumably no real wrist strength and she's been complaining for weeks now that her wrists and thumbs are sore and really all fucked up.

I think she has tendonitis or something...she's not used to holding 13-15 pounds of weight.

Oh god this week has been not fun. My 4 month old has gone from sleeping most of the night (an odd feeding at 1 or 2) to waking up every two hours needing food, then being a giddy little thing for the next 45 minutes. She's just started teething (best guess, judging from the drool), but we've also started oatmeal/cereal to keep her full. Doesn't help that my 3 y/o has strep (the latest in a long line of winter illnesses).

Anyone else run into these phases where sleep is rad and then it's just not happening?

Yep. Sleep regression can happen. It sucks, but tends to always improve. My daughter did that for about three weeks before going back to her regular pattern of sleeping through the night.

This is a serious issue and you should have her checked out. You don't want to get some permanent damage by ignoring it.

My wife was similar - complained about sore wrists when we first started. Maybe she held baby in an awkward position and supported weight in bad places ( I didn't have the same problem, but maybe I cradled more weight in my upper arms naturally).

We went to a doctor who referred us to a specialist who recommended a wrist splint. It was a cloth sheath with metal strips that were ergonomic ally moulded to provide support in the wrist and prevent bending. It as mostly to heal. Better to hurt then heal than to let it get permanent. She had to wear it for most hours of the day and night.

That was ages ago and I think it's a lot better now (she doesn't use it). Once you get more accustomed to baby's weight or carrying her in a different way as they get older it may improve. But at the very least get it checked out now and get it to heal before it gets worse.

Yeah, she has a doctor's appointment but you know how it goes, they won't take you right away. She bought some wrist and thumb braces to wear. The other complication is she is a CPA and is in the middle of tax season so I'm not sure she can get her work done when she wears those.

anyone have any experience getting assistance from your insurance buying a breast pump? My wife says she's looked into it and says they won't help until after you've given birth, and then at that point they have their own list of vendors which she says either have a huge waiting list, or seem to have discontinued selling pumps anymore altogether because of the hassle and lack of big profits.

I feel like we're going to be stuck buying one full price from some retail store witout any help from them.

I know nothing of insurance, but try to make sure you buy a pump that'll pump straight into whatever brand bottles you're using. We've got a First Years breast pump, but Avent bottles, which is awkward, but it's a darn good pump.

I remember the sleepless nights, but I remember them fondly. I had so many fantastic moments with my son, who is now 14. Now, many years laster, my wife is pregnant for her first time.

However fondly I remember all the moments I am kind of nervous for all the upcoming hardships. Then again, last time we were rocking crt monitors, had no tablets and so on. Bring on the google glasses. :D

Have her ask her OBGYN to write a prescription which I think will save her some money (it was still around $200, but she got to put the purchase on her tax-free FSA card)...that is what my wife did, and she got a Medela pump. I was there when my wife asked and he wrote it I think before the birth...and then what occurred was the prescription covered the rental of a hospital grade pump until my wife was ready to go to a shop and buy her own. The rental price of the hospital pump was $10 for a month.

If you need more specific info I can ask my wife later, but she just came down with the flu last night so I'm not sure how responsive she is going to be.

edit: I asked about the prescription...she said she asked for it so she didn't have to pay sales tax on it.

Well, I'll update myself on the reflux. Started him on zantac, 0.5 ml twice a day (15mg/ml syrup). He does not like the taste but it has been a week and almost all of his reflux like symptoms have resolved. He can spit up, vurp, and hiccup without going off on a screaming fit and he is up to 4 oz per feed. We also started an aggressive burping regimen and simethicone drops, as well as eliminate all formula (I was skipping boob juice with some similac advance), so those things may have contributed as well. The wife is about fed up with breast feeding/pumping though, so I am reintroducing similac sensitive to see how that goes.

Holy shit, my 3 month and 10 day old kid is already popping a tooth I think...she's been going ballistic for the last 2 days. I have no idea what to do. I see a white bump on the top of her mouth where her gumline is.

Is that a tooth, or is it a bit early for her to be teething?

I think that a little early. Typically starts around 6 months? But something I've learnt is that the guidelines are just that - actually times for milestones for individual babies can vary wildly.

Magically she has been sleeping for the past 2-3 hours in her swing....this is unheard of. I'm hoping it's not teething as she doesn't have the ability to really hold onto anything at this point, so she couldn't keep a teething ring in her mouth if she was in pain.

what insurance do you have (and do you have to use a insurance facilitator (like Accolade)? My wife and i just got through a month of frustration trying to go through my work insurance's "facilitator" service to get a breast pump. Eventually it took us going around them by just finding a supplier that was recommended by my insurance directly.

I could PM you the supplier if you are still interested.

STEALTH EDIT: Due date is next sunday, really really hoping the baby gets here sooner rather than later

First of all, enjoyed reading this thread while awaiting account activation last year. Stine useful advice and information, and I somehow geeky supported knowing I wasn't alone in this bittersweet journey that is parenthood.

My 16 month old daughter has been in a solid routine of being left in her cot at 7pm, falling asleep herself and waking at 7am for a good five months. Until the past week, when she has screamed at being left alone, refused to sleep, woken during night and waking earlier than usual in morning.

Its fair to say this has come or of the blue for me and my wife and we're struggling. We're still holding out hope it is a consequence of the cold she has had recently but her daytime tantrums suggest she's just rebelling across the board.

Fun, fun, fun.

Truly insanity. We're a few days short of nine months. Soon, our daughter would have spent more time out of the womb than in...

One of her favourite toys is a wiimote, lol. Guess I should get SOME use out of it.

My son had his 1st tooth at 1 month, he had his first teeth much quicker than other babies his age that we know so yes it's definitely possible

My work uses United Healthcare. I'm not aware of a facilitator....my wife said she called the insurance company and they gave her a list of nationwide supplier websites that either didnt have any or required a prescription and couldnt accept an order until after the baby is born. Then she called back and was given a list of like 1000 medical suppliers in Missouri of which she called a few and they told her they no longer carry them because they dont make any money. Its a wacky system we have here isn't it?

I would be interested in whatever supplier you went through though if you were successful. Might be worth looking into.

Also, good luck and godspeed with the birth! Be sure and report back to us with the good news.

My wife has a month and three days left until the due date for our second child. We currently have a 2 and a half year old. Honestly, I'm not looking forward to the sleepless nights and doing all the boring first couple of month stuff again.

I worry that our first born is going to have some jealousy, etc. Any words of advice from those of you with multiple kids?

Tell him to stop growing so fast :-(

It was a while ago but I seem to remember going through some crap like this trying to get a breast pump.

I am pretty sure we just bought one, my wife really wanted everything before the baby got here, which was a good thing because he was 2 weeks early and caught us totally off guard ;)

What time does she go down?

We did a sort of sleep program (i say did but we trally just took the concepts and mosified them) around 7-8months (she's 9 months) and after about a week she went from 2-3 wakes during a night to none. She sleeps around 10-11 hours straight (8-9pm to 7-7:30am). The only exception was a couple nights ago when she was sick (had a fever and runny nose) where she woke at about 2 am and was pretty wide awake so we fed her and put her back.

The key point was that they need to learn how to put them selves back to sleep when they wake.

How long has this been happening?

My son was a great sleeper then suddenly his patterns/schedule went nuts. Didn't know what was going on. This lasted about two weeks then just as suddenly everything went back to normal. Apparently this happens to some kids.

Our son just reached his due date today (he is 9 weeks old) and weighs 3.3kg.

Also, it turns out that when it comes to swaddling, I've been doing it wrong this whole time. Oh well. You live and you learn.

Did you try edge park medical supplies or rotech healthcare? The edge park medical website has a specific section about obtaining breast pumps. They also did not give us any problems with ordering, had them in stock, and they will reach out to your OBGYN directly for prescriptions and such.

I just use those sleep sacks with the Velcro.
Apparently, he's a touch small for those just yet, so we're making use of the muslin wraps we have.

We just spent an hour and a half just now trying to calm him down after a feed. He's prone to get really gassy, and he was awfully uncomfortable, squirming and crying and unable to calm down. We think it might be silent reflux.

It's baffling, since he's usually so calm.

Also, he's going through a bit of a growth spurt at the moment. He wakes up early, eager and greedy for a feed, but it takes its toll on Mrs Squirrel. I try to help where I can with bottles and the like, but I can only do so much and I go back to work next week.

Regarding breast pumps, most hospitals will rent you one fairly cheaply I think. At least here in the US. They tend to be better quality than the ones you buy as well.

Wah, she's standing!

Our one is just 9 months. Not even crawling... :(. - or maybe :) from what I hear. At one point we swear she was going to crawl within a week as ate was shuffling forward in her belly, but instead she took to rolling places.

Yeah, I was really surprised to be honest. Shen went from rolling around to standing up in 2 months... She grows toooooooooooo faaaaaaaaast lol

I'd say cherish the moments where you don't have to run after your baby around your place. It does add a bit of stress :p

Baby fun prison!

Haha we had some of these. We had two babies 16 months apart so we had to have a safe place to put one while we attended to the other. I can't believe how much your baby has grown! Seems like yesterday you were posting about her birth!
