Nintendo of America: Your Boxart is Rubbish

Tellaerin said:
No it's not.

The Japanese boxart projects this nice movie-poster vibe. A dude with shades (with a lightsaber, no less) and a hot chick posed against a West Coast backdrop, in these affectedly 'cool' poses that give it a slightly over-the-top feel. Like a poster for some tongue-in-cheek action flick.

I look at the other one and think, 'OMG, some guy's trying to kill me with a fluorescent bulb!' :p
Except that it uses ugly in-game assets and looks incredibly unattractive. :/

Despite that, I still think it's more visually appealing than Lightbulb Assassin there, but hey, to each his own.

I'm with you on this one, I wonder which boxart australia will get, isn't europe getting something similar to the Japan boxart?

There is actually a reason for this. Apparently someone got it in there head that Americans can better identify with a hero figure that is clearly defined. I don't know if it's subconscious or what, but whoever decides on boxart has taken that to heart. The euro and japan boxarts are more about scenery and mood, not sure what they're supposed to identify with there. Also, apparently Americans like angry macho figures more than cute and happy things. GI Joe syndrome or something.

You forgot the best one:

Edit: The big black box in the top left corner is NOT on the actual box.

The worst box art crimes ever committed was by NOE in the N64 era. I was trying to reverse the decision before launch, for Scandinavia at least, without luck. What did they do?

Take a perfectly great NOA box art...

and then shrink the great graphic and apply a big black border around it on all sides, making everything from Nintendo 64 logo to the "Only for N64" corner look utterly badly positioned:

It was actually representative of the NOA PAL games, which also had big black borders on the top and bottom of the screen due to lazy PAL ports. Late releases, sloppy ports, butt ugly artwork. Fuck you NOE. I'm not buying anything you distribute in Europe, ever.

A fuller box art isn't always a bad thing. The most important aspect is that your eyes have something to immediately gravitate to, which is Samus. There are a few too many figures in the background (Ridley and the random GF guy aren't needed), but it's a lot better than the US box art, which feels incredibly disconnected. Samus stands at a weird angle from the planet, and the disombodied head does not work. There is absolutely nothing that meshes about it. The Japanese box at least has a logical order that you can follow, and it's all generally the same color. Neither come close to the Japanese MP2 box, however.

The best thing to do is just throw on a piece of hand drawn art (stylized ones are my favorite, preferably one that conveys the main thrust of the game instead of specific scenes).

Here's another example of superior Japanese box art:

I've never really realized just how horrible this box art is. Why is the 2 at a different angle than the rest of the title? Why does Mega Man have a gun and a visor? Why isn't he even looking where he is shooting? Why is Dr. Light hiding behind Crash Man; or, is that supposed to be Dr. Wily? Most importantly, what the heck is going on with poor Mega Man's ankle. That's just horrible.
