Aaaand done, finished at level
. Solid 8/10 overall. My two main gripes lead directly into the third:
First, difficulty. Game was a complete pushover, namely because of problem two - the lack of variety in all things. By the start of region 3, I had the strat down for every single enemy in the game, because I'd already seen them all. Giant dude with the long tongue, Tengu or standard red oni with knives? Mid-stance katana. Literally everything else? High-stance axe.
Map variety is lacking too, in the sense that while a bunch of them are technically different places, they might as well not be. Approximately half are shrines at night, while it's raining. Another quarter are samey castle interiors, while what's left is actually pretty interesting, but unfortunately on the shorter side/side-quest only.
Should stop and clarify at this point, that none of the enemies or areas are actually
bad. They're just in very short supply for what is a pretty long game. Anyway, my main issue...
Bosses. There are a
FUCK-TON of bosses, but they're riddled with problems. First, a ton of them are pushovers (without exception, nothing took me more than a second try, including beefed up side-quest rematches), dropping on the first attempt. They're overly telegraphed, and only seem to have 'short-range' and 'long-range' attacks, leading to a one-size-fits-all mid-range approach.
Boss variety is pretty awful too, to the point where I'd argue you only really have half the actual number (if you include shit like the dojo fights, which are bosses in health bar alone). You'll fight not-Nue a couple of times, along with not-Warrior of the West, etc. There are fights I like (Hino-enma, who is arguably the best boss in the game), but none I love, and a dozen I already can't remember.
So why is this an 8/10 despite all my bitching? Because the game
feels great to play. While you're arguably able to do way too much as the player (which imo is where a lot of the soft difficulty comes from - there's no 'boss that's only hard because of the way you're built' ala Souls), it's also very,
very satisfying to put it all together and completely decimate half a dozen dudes like it's nothing.
So uh, yeah. Pretty good/great game, but with a ton of things holding it back. Very much looking forward to the inevitable sequel, as long as it avoids the typical Koei Tecmo trap (hopefully it's more Toukiden 2, and less... everything else).
